While my initial contact with the waiter made me a bit nervous--he had clearly never heard of celiac--he did allow me to write down the German word for celiac on his notepad to show to the chef. The chef came out and reassured me that they were used to cooking for people with celiac, and that the dish I had ordered was indeed gluten free (all gluten free dishes are marked with "gf" on the menu, too). This was a nice gesture, as eating out as a celiac always involves a fair amount of worry. I ordered the gnocchi with cherry tomatoes, rucola, and parma ham. While I thought you could definitely tell the gnocchi themselves were gluten free--had a bit of a grainy feel/taste to them--the rest of the dish was so excellent and flavorful it more than made up for it. The service was also nice and friendly in other ways--since it was rather chilly, and we were sitting outside, a man (who I later recognize as Eugen himself from the website) brought us a couple of blankets and made sure we were comfortable. It's just a shame they don't open til the 1pm on Sundays--otherwise we would have been back the next day (I was already planning my lunch of a bunless burger with roasted potatoes!). Instead, it will have to wait for our next trip to the Bodensee!

The restaurant Seehof has a pretty unassuming entrance in a little street, but its terrace provides stunning views over Bodensee, or Lake Constance as its actual name is in English. I was visiting Friedrichshafen for just about a day and wanted to have a nice meal by the water. I quickly came across a few positive reviews of Seehof and decided to go there. Later, a local friend told me, that many people who live in Friedrichshafen do not yet know about this great little gem, so it is surprisingly still kind of an insider tip. When I walked in on a Sunday around noon, the restaurant was not very busy and I chose probably the table with the best view over the water. I was quickly handed the menu and browsed through the different items. I missed a Riesling on the wine list. It turns out that the Müller-Thurgau white wine I had ordered was great and fresh and soon I forgot that there was no Riesling on the menu. Also, I would recommend asking for a tap water instead of bottled water, because this very lake is the source of excellent drinking water. I started right with a main and they were very friendly and flexible, so I could customise my order and go off-menu. I went with pork tenderloin and home-made spätzle with gravy. It came with a little starter of salad with quite a bit vinegar - that is how they do it in the area, but I am not a big fan of these salads. For many people, the tenderloin would have been the main ingredient of the dish. Not for me - without a question, the grated spätzle were excellent and the true star. The gravy was nice and tangy, although perhaps a little bit fatty. The pieces of pork tenderloin were soft and delicious. For dessert, I had a mousse au chocolat which was alright, but it did not wow me as the spätzle did. After becoming used to London food prices, I was surprised when I saw the bill. It was a very reasonable price for good food, great wine and a perfect view in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Overall, I can only recommend Seehof. If you get a front-row table in the sun, it's worth to go for the view alone. Accompanied by at least a Müller-Thurgau to keep you cool so you can enjoy the view a bit longer.
