100 m from the lake you find this restaurant a little hiddend in the narrow alleys of Ascona. There is one menue with many courses typically for traditional italian cuisine. Went for lunch at This restaurant. The restaurant was a little old it was More Italian than Swiss.. Definitely needs sprucing up and cleaning showed a lack of care. The food was average the best.. The meat was good the the ravioli was average it was average. Not impressed by how they served it out of a bowl from table to table and the girl following with a bag of cheese . The bag looked like it came from the department store. The lemon cello was good And the dessert average. Not my favorite grotel, comma Ascona has so many Great Grottos to choose from. read more

Went for dinner and it was very good. They serve the food for the day. Start out with salad and tray of salami. Then a tray of ham, pasta, beef, bread, cheese plate and carafe of wine. Then they serve nut wine and limoncello. You must pay for the alcohol. Overall, very good food and great atmosphere read more

This is an absolutely no frills no nonsense bare bones restaurant....and you are a fool if you don't go. The atmosphere is fun and loud the food comes fast hot and plenty from the time the self service salami appetizer hits the table ( slice what you want ) to the final digestif shots (pick which and pour) we had such fun and full bellies for a great price!! Talking with the owner about his life as he dropped off the dessert was such a cool time as well...go fancy fancy if you want but this place is always packed and fun.... read more

This place is unique. There is no menu. You just sit down at a long table next to a stranger (maybe) and you pass on the pots with the food to your neighbors....there is usually many different menus passing from spaghetti to polenta to risotto....the chef is one of the best in the region..... The food is so amazing your mouth not only will water but melt !!!!!!!!! At the end of your food experience they will.pass on the cake of the day on a big tray in the same fashion. The chef will then come it and price you depending on how big it belly looks . Its lots of fun. Its located in the heart of the wonderful little village of ascona, right by the lake . The grotto baldoria is a family style restaurant where the simple menu changes every day. When we ate here there was a first course of bread and dried sausage air dried. The second corse was a tomato salad with greens cut fine on a mandoline. The dressing was magnificent on the arugula. The next course was beef tenderloin sliced thin as paper with a minced tapenade of garlic, eggplant and basil. The last course was polenta with cheese. By far the best meal in Ascona in a wonderful location. Please visit the fine old establishment! read more

We loved this place. Found it on Yelp and were not disappointed. The atmosphere is great and so is the food. No menu you eat what they are serving that night and if you're unsure what to do or what is coming next just watch the tables around you. For example I thought the pasta was the main dish turned out there was still steak and polenta to come. 5 courses in all salami & bread, pasta, steak, cheese & desert. We ordered red wine that came in a carafe it looked like you could go inside to pick a Specific bottle. You can't go wrong! read more

Absolutely fantastic restaurant! We ate dinner there. This restaurant experience might not be suitable for everyone, but if you like surprises (there is no menu to choose from), then this is the perfect place for you! Food is super fresh and very tasty. You get served a several course meal for a very affordable price of around 20 CHF. If you want a one-in-a-lifetime experience, go eat at that restaurant (that is, if you can get a table). In a nutshell: it was okay. The good: Location is beautiful - located in a side alley of Ascona and covered with greenery, the outdoor seating area is actually quite pretty! It's not really upscale (wouldn't expect it for that price nor would it fit the setting), just park benches and a few tables. Some of the staff is very friendly and welcoming - like part of a family. The price is unbeatable: 19 CHF for an entire menu - far from the usual $$$ Swiss standards. The good started out quite tasty. We had salami and cow tongue, as well as a salad. The bad: The other part of the staff was very unfriendly... My friend was confused and asked whether we just sit anywhere? To which we received a very snotty response. The main waitress who seated us gave us the feeling as if we were taking up too much space (telling us we should sit closer together, since there are other people here as well) which led her to seat one of my friends in a cramped chair that dug into the back of the guy sitting behind her. Next to us were 2 ladies, the rest of the table was empty and stayed empty....hence why I don't understand the uber-cramped quarters. The food started out nice but then went downhill with each meal. I'm not really complaining about the food...again, for the price of 19 CHF it truly is very fair. Overall it tasted like canned food from school camp. Edible by all means, but not really restaurant quality. Except the cake...I love sweets but this dry baked good was just not even remotely tasty (even the waiter said he doesn't like it!). The main con of the experience was when they came with the check... We skipped the cheese and coffee because we were full and had to get going. When we had first arrived, my friend double checked that the meal indeed only costs 19 CHF? To which we received a clear yes. But when the waiter came to cash out, we learned that the salad and this and that cost extra. Really? It's a sit down place where food is just placed in front of you and you eat what you're given. If you place a salad in front of me I am not going to assume that the salad is "separate" and costs extra. All in all it was again...: okay. A cute experience but the unfriendly wait staff and the unclear menu (what is included? What costs extra?) made the experience a little enjoyable. read more
