All I can say is...WOW! Huge! Impressive! First off...it's on two floors. The first, where you enter is filled with huge bags of rice, over sized ceramic planters and a bazillion bamboo steamers in every size imaginable. Upstairs, well let's just say you could get lots for hours. It took me a half an hour to just check out all the beautiful blue & white traditional Chinese plates and serving dishes, the woks and other Asian cooking paraphernalia. I expected rows and rows ...and then more rows and rows of Chinese, Korean (and to my joy, Japanese) bottles and bags of sauces, spices, noodles, candies...the usual, but in much larger and more varied quantities than the other Asian markets I've visited in Halifax. What I didn't expect was fresh - you heard me - fresh bok choy, plump lemongrass, napa cabbage, kai lan and persimmons, among other fresh Asian vegetables. There were fridges and freezers filled with sticky buns, other Dim Sum dumplings, Chinese pepperoni (I love it) other Asian cured pork. The staff was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. So all those interesting and intriguing packages - like dried lily leaves, were explained, and how and when to use them. I didn't realize, until I was two blocks from home in the North End that this is the retail arm of of Ca Hoa Enterprises, importers and distributors of Asian fare. I pass their trucks every day and never gave it a thought. Things are different now though!

They have grown quite a bit in the past few years, adding on an addition and adding a few more sections to the store. They started out selling your basic market type food. Fruits, vegetables, Milk, eggs. Now they that plus baked-goods, fish and many different condiments such as dressings and spices. Country Market is a great place to stop to gather your produce. It's always fresh and a lot cheaper than the grocery stores. They sometimes have great sales on things such as banana's, celery, lettuce and apples. Timberlea doesn't have any grocery stores, so on a Sunday when you're cooking your turkey dinner and realize you forgot turnip, you can run down to the Country Market and grab what you forgot to get!

Thank goodness I did not drive more than 30 minutes to get there as I was extremely disappointed by what I found when I arrived. Most of the food was simply packaged items that I could find at the grocery store 10 minutes from home. The baby carrots were in sealed plastic bags and the one bunch of fresh carrots was so limp, I could have bent them backward without snapping. I'm not sure to whom this market caters, as even local residents can simply go to the Bayer's Lake Superstore and get a much better/fresher selection. Maybe the staff should get up early, drive to the Valley to buy real produce and sell it locally at a profit.

I happened upon this place by mistake but it was a pleasant find…read more The beauty of Asian and international grocers is the abundance of vegan and vegetarian foods you can find and for inexpensive. There's so much stuff packed in this place it would take me a day to look everything over but just being there a few minutes I found vegetable dumplings, bean curd jerkies and every variety of ramen and rice noodle around. I will definitely be back to investigate more.

When I was learning Mandarin, I felt very inclined to go into this shop to test out my skills. I never quite got the hang of the language, but I did become a fan of this grocery store as a result of my language learning attempt. You can buy pickled foods, frozen foods, dried foods and beverages, as well as sweeties and some everyday staples. You may not exactly know what something is (there aren't always adequate translations on the packages) but that shouldn't dissuade you. Approach it like a food adventure, get home cook it up and see what happens. I've purchased some pretty good egg-roll wrappers here, as well as rice and dried mushrooms. They also sell tofu pretty cheap, although it isn't organic. I recommend popping into this local grocer and expanding your horizons. The man who is always there when I am is quite nice and willing to assist you on your culinary adventure.

Thick cut, and I swear it loses less weight when it's cooked; not sure if this is because it's less fatty than regular commercial bacon or if that stuff is water chilled, but I'd say you're getting more bang for your buck in both quality and quantity. I think it clocks in at $8/lb. The breakfast sausages were a substitute for me when they were out of bacon on a recent visit. They have a fairly mild seasoning to them, and not quite that typical breakfast sausage flavour, which I am admittedly a sucker for. They're a bit more coarsely ground than most sausages, and could use a bit more fat added in as they are a bit on the dry side for a sausage.$7/lb. I picked up a batch of maple-cured English bacon on my last visit, which I'm looking forward to trying! Your more basic cuts of meat are fairly reasonably priced, but be ready to suffer some damage to your wallet if you're getting any of the high end cuts.

I highly recommend the apple rosemary sausage. They also have maple sausage and banger sausage. You can see them cutting the meat in front of you so you know it's fresh. Their website goes into detail how they raise their cows and why it's better for the environment and the cows. I am happy to support this business at the Farmer's Market. Taken from their website about the importance of eating grass fed beef: "Grass-fed beef and lamb are now considered a health food of the highest order. Compared to grain-finished meats, it is higher in omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene, and especially conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an essential fatty acid largely missing from modern diets and found almost exclusively in the dairy and meat products of grass-eating ruminants (cattle, sheep, and goats)."

I live closer to Pat's Grocery but the fact that they don't accept debit and are only open until 5 makes me take a few extra strides to Joe's Kwik-Way. Completely family owned, you'll find a member of Joe's family happy to serve you. Joe himself is quite a character, a strong silent type, but quirks like a funny grandpa. Sometimes he'll suggest to me new products he got in that I should try, and not in a "I'm sitting on 3 crates of this stuff and it's gotta go" kind of way. Granted, the store isn't too quick to refresh it's shelves, and stuff pretty much stays there until it's bought, but nothing that's totally out of control. While your in Joe's, more then likely when a customer comes in through the door, you'll hear them say "Hey Joe" (They're not quoting Hendrix) Joe is the most popular guy in my neighbourhood and he runs a good store too.
