I work in California, for the state. I am in a contract situation, limiting my options to bring…read moreworkplace charges based on my union's binding arbitration agreement. It took me almost two years to settle my dispute with my employer due to this very tricky gray zone of the law. Most dishearteningly, the union was not always working on my behalf, though by contract held most of the cards to represent me. The issue I was disputing was related to age and sex discrimination, and the unfair treatment I had been subject to over a period of seven years. It was just a very depressing and demoralizing time. I contacted several law firms. One of these, in Northern CA, had famously settled many suits such as mine, amazingly against my very employer. In terms of doing business, they were absolutely the worst! First, they requested a $70K retainer to even sit and hear the details of my story. They also said in a phone consultation that they would refuse to take action against my union, telling me the firm was pro-union and would not, on principle, undermine union activities. I was simply floored. Someone at my office then suggested Rothschild and Alwill, a firm that had done extremely good work for her. Julian Alwill, one of the partners, took my case on contingency. He directed me in gathering the supporting documentation I would need, and simultaneous actions we must take that would support my claim. He explained everything in CA State law that was presently standing in the way of getting the justice I knew I deserved. I had done my own research, but knew none of what he told me. He said we would win this! From our first meeting, he gave me a preliminary game plan. He told me what our first step was going to be, stating that depending on how it went, we might have to modify the plan as we proceeded in order to get what we wanted. He said it was going to be a long, slow process, but not to give up. No cliche, here, but the wheels of justice really do turn slowly. He never gave up on me. He sat through several phone interviews I had to have with the State of CA, Fair Housing and Employment, and my own union. He made certain that everything was done precisely, and strategically, to favor my position. And, amazingly, I eventually won. I recommend this law firm to anyone who is being discriminated against, no matter how hopeless your present situation seems. Having the right counsel who believes in you is absolutely paramount!
