Grizzly Lodge Sign against the mountain backdrop
    Cello K.

This Lodge gets 4 stars for Friendliness, Atmosphere, Cleanliness, and Proximity to other amenities- Yellowstone National Park, and good food at a pristine mountain location. The owner has a wood burning fire ring in the yard for night time socializing. A stream next to the yard and view of mountains in NE Yellowstone NP. The rooms are set up in a motor hotel fashion with your car outside your door. The room was in need of updates and the tv doesn't get many channels, but we didn't care. The price was a little high but consistent with hotels in resort areas. We drove the Beartooth highway in the morning.

There is a gas barbecue near the cabins with seating to enjoy the outdoors and relax. There are chairs by the creek where you can sit and absorb the experience of being in the forest. The cabins are the perfect size for one or two people. They have everything you need to make a meal in the cozy cabin. I was fortunate enough to get a reservation again this year. The care and pride they have in their cabins are well deserved. I think Pete is the moose whisperer. Twice I have been invited to see the moose mom and kid(s) from the deck of Carol and Pete's house. If you are having separation anxiety from your pup, Kelly is there to help you cope. When you come to Montana, this is the perfect place to stay while you enjoy Yellowstone, only a mile away. Be good to yourself and stay with Carol and Pete at Silver Tip Cabins. You deserve it. You won't regret it. You'll become a regular. I have. Thanks, Carol and Pete, for everything. It is located in a spot that is completely wooded yet you have incredible views of the surrounding mountains. We saw moose, deer (within 10 feet of our cabin porch) and birds we had never seen before! Each morning started out with coffee on the cabin porch where we lingered just appreciating the woods and the wildlife. It thundered and rained nearly every day but for short times, so that no plans were spoiled. Carol and Pete and their dog Kelly are gracious hosts providing all the creature comforts (tv, cell service, laundry) along with opportunities to see a mother moose and her two calves enjoying a salt lick - thanks to Pete! We had easy access to Silver Gate and Cooke City, especially "Stop the Car" ice cream! We were within 7 minutes of the NE Entrance to YNP, so we made many trips into the park where we saw buffalo, goats. fox, wild horses and a grizzly bear! This was the trip of a lifetime! Thank you so much Carol and Pete!! We intend to come back! Judy and Rick H.

What a gem. I met the owner Brandon, in Red Lodge while on a road trip heading to Yellowstone and…read moredidn't even know Cooke City existed. Brandon encouraged me to stop by on my way the next day and stay a night, and I ended up staying for several. I was slightly skeptical of the town at first having never been here before; but, once I pulled in, I was blown away by the beauty and ambiance; not only of the town, but the landscape as it's nestled in a small valley between 2 mountains. I had just spent the previous 5hrs driving Bear-Tooth Pass from Red Lodge which is normally a 3hr drive. It was such a breathtaking scenic pass that it took me 5hrs with all the stops I made for pictures. Bear Tooth Pass ends in Cooke City, and is only about 3mi outside the NE entrance of Yellowstone. High Country Motel offers quick easy access to Lamar valley. It is not far from Lamar's rolling pastures filled with immense herds of buffalo and high mountain peaks where Mt. Goats can be seen grazing mountain meadows, you'll need binoculars to see them, as they are quite high. The cabins are clean with a full kitchen. The town is super cool and quaint, with an old-world vibe and architecture. It is a VERY small historic town, with just a couple gas stations, a few restaurants, bars, shops, and a general store, but has everything you need. You can walk to everything the town has to offer from HCM. There is also a gift shop on site in the HCM office where you can purchase cold craft beers, sodas, energy drinks, water, snacks, and souvenirs. I still wear my HCMCC flat-bill hat every day. The views from my cabin were remarkable, Brandon and his staff were exceptionally kind and fun people. Highly recommend staying here for your Yellowstone vacation, it is super convenient to explore and access the park from High County Motel.

We chose this place because we thought we would have a place to eat, a place to have a drink and little entertainment all in one location.. when we arrived we were flat lied to and told that the tavern just closed early that day! After speaking to locals the tavern/casino hasn't been open almost all summer long. The 2nd day we asked again about it and all the guy would tell us is it was closed then acted like he didn't understand what I was asking.. Of course while on his phone sitting in the lobby. Woke up the 2nd day went down to get coffee and was told no coffee they had to clean the machine of course they were once again sitting in the lobby on their phones. 3rd morning had to go down to look for someone so we could get towels, 3 days and no house keeping, we had to actually go down and request for our room to be turned down... Well ended up just 1 out of the 5days we stayed there they actually changed our sheets and made the bed... The last 2 days they did bring towels and take out trash but that was it! No mopping no soap or coffee cup replacements.. they just brought towels... they offered wifi and we connected but still had zero service.. This was our anniversary trip and it was ruined sadly by the place we chose to stay... We will not ever make that mistake again! The town is small and options are slim but sleeping in a truck would have been better than staying at the Soda Butte Lodge...

If you're a candy ass, keep moving. If you're keeping expectation realistic, you're gonna be just fine. We arrived at Big Moose and we greeted my Mo and Jo, the resident Corgis. Super friendly dogs that are just happy as pie to be there. Terri stepped out and showed us to our room. We had single room with a decent size shower and a decent size bed. As we were going to be there a week, we wanted a room with a kitchenette, but for the first two days we could only have a room without one. That's cool, and we're happy because... #1...we're cool. We understand that the world doesn't revolve around us. #2...Terri is doing what she can to make everyone happy. Day #2 arrived and we hit the road. When we came back, Terri let us know that the kitchenette room was available and we could have it if we wanted it! Heck yeah, we moved our stuff and made it a nice evening. Our kitchenette room was #4. Yes, the shower is tiny. Yes, the toilet is loose and feels like you're on a roller coaster. Terri pointed that out so we knew what to expect. The kitchenette is small, but it's got a 4 burner and an oven. Perfect for a quick meal. If you're going to be cooking Thanksgiving dinner, you're gonna have a hard time. If you're there on Thanksgiving and not with your family, maybe you've made some questionable decisions and shouldn't be reading this, you should be doing some self examination. We really enjoyed our stay. We got to chat with a few of the other guests and got some great tips on the park. All in all, it was a great time. Also, the hot tub and a cold beer is a beautiful thing, especially in a rainy evening. One thing to note. As you're in the north gate area, it's much smaller, but it's really close to Lamar Valley which is where a lot of the animal action is. We loved that part. We saw foxes, black bears, bison, moose, elk, dear, mountain goats, grizzly's all within 90 minutes of being in the park. BUT if you're expecting to be seeing geysers within 30 minutes, you're going to be disappointed. The geysers and such are all a looooong drive. Expect 3 hours or so each way. Enjoy your stay, temper your expectations and your gonna be fine. And say hi to Terri for us, she's a super nice lady.

The older cabins are for those of us who are going to Cooke for the history and tradition and have stayed relatively unchanged with their exterior log walls and tilting floors - but amenities like Direct TV, WiFi and thermal pane windows are recent additions. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the daily room cleaning is first rate. The kitchens have all (almost) of the nec cooking goodies and the bathrooms are super clean with great fluffy towels. For those wanting a more updated lodging they have replaced some of the cabins with new modern facilities including some with two floors, and western decor. Kim, one of the owners and Melissa, their front desk person are both wonderful and work hard to make our stay great. When I'm enjoying Yellowstone, the Lamar valley and Trout Lake, I wouldn't stay anyplace else. And it's 300' to midtown Cooke City for the nightlife.

Our private cabin on the other hand was just OK as you'd probably expect from the listing. The cabins are lined wall to wall from one other (by twos) and you can park right in front which is nice for carrying luggage and such. The room is dimly lit, the curtains and bedding had a slight musty smell to them and the wifi was extremely weak (unusable if trying to use a laptop). The sink is located outside the bathroom which was nice, but the bathroom I would catch some mosquitoes in there which isn't fun. For a couple nights, this was a fine stay and close to the the entrance of Yellowstone. It's right off of the Bearclaw Highway (or whatever it's called) which is a beautiful scenic drive!
