What a gem. I met the owner Brandon, in Red Lodge while on a road trip heading to Yellowstone and…read moredidn't even know Cooke City existed. Brandon encouraged me to stop by on my way the next day and stay a night, and I ended up staying for several. I was slightly skeptical of the town at first having never been here before; but, once I pulled in, I was blown away by the beauty and ambiance; not only of the town, but the landscape as it's nestled in a small valley between 2 mountains. I had just spent the previous 5hrs driving Bear-Tooth Pass from Red Lodge which is normally a 3hr drive. It was such a breathtaking scenic pass that it took me 5hrs with all the stops I made for pictures. Bear Tooth Pass ends in Cooke City, and is only about 3mi outside the NE entrance of Yellowstone. High Country Motel offers quick easy access to Lamar valley. It is not far from Lamar's rolling pastures filled with immense herds of buffalo and high mountain peaks where Mt. Goats can be seen grazing mountain meadows, you'll need binoculars to see them, as they are quite high. The cabins are clean with a full kitchen. The town is super cool and quaint, with an old-world vibe and architecture. It is a VERY small historic town, with just a couple gas stations, a few restaurants, bars, shops, and a general store, but has everything you need. You can walk to everything the town has to offer from HCM. There is also a gift shop on site in the HCM office where you can purchase cold craft beers, sodas, energy drinks, water, snacks, and souvenirs. I still wear my HCMCC flat-bill hat every day. The views from my cabin were remarkable, Brandon and his staff were exceptionally kind and fun people. Highly recommend staying here for your Yellowstone vacation, it is super convenient to explore and access the park from High County Motel.

Feels like you're staying at a friend or family's place not a hotel. Beautiful views out of every window. If you're coming to Cooke City any time of year, this is definitely where you want to stay.

The older cabins are for those of us who are going to Cooke for the history and tradition and have stayed relatively unchanged with their exterior log walls and tilting floors - but amenities like Direct TV, WiFi and thermal pane windows are recent additions. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the daily room cleaning is first rate. The kitchens have all (almost) of the nec cooking goodies and the bathrooms are super clean with great fluffy towels. For those wanting a more updated lodging they have replaced some of the cabins with new modern facilities including some with two floors, and western decor. Kim, one of the owners and Melissa, their front desk person are both wonderful and work hard to make our stay great. When I'm enjoying Yellowstone, the Lamar valley and Trout Lake, I wouldn't stay anyplace else. And it's 300' to midtown Cooke City for the nightlife.

Our private cabin on the other hand was just OK as you'd probably expect from the listing. The cabins are lined wall to wall from one other (by twos) and you can park right in front which is nice for carrying luggage and such. The room is dimly lit, the curtains and bedding had a slight musty smell to them and the wifi was extremely weak (unusable if trying to use a laptop). The sink is located outside the bathroom which was nice, but the bathroom I would catch some mosquitoes in there which isn't fun. For a couple nights, this was a fine stay and close to the the entrance of Yellowstone. It's right off of the Bearclaw Highway (or whatever it's called) which is a beautiful scenic drive!

Luckily there was a ceiling fan and windows that open. Hotel lobby is large with lots of seating. Great place to hang out with others, eat takeout, or play cards. Didn't get to try the restaurant. absolute dreadful stay! None of the accommodations were open! No casino, no tavern, no restaurant…read more! Employees were in the lobby on their phones every time we walked through.. We chose this place because we thought we would have a place to eat, a place to have a drink and little entertainment all in one location.. when we arrived we were flat lied to and told that the tavern just closed early that day! After speaking to locals the tavern/casino hasn't been open almost all summer long. The 2nd day we asked again about it and all the guy would tell us is it was closed then acted like he didn't understand what I was asking.. Of course while on his phone sitting in the lobby. Woke up the 2nd day went down to get coffee and was told no coffee they had to clean the machine of course they were once again sitting in the lobby on their phones. 3rd morning had to go down to look for someone so we could get towels, 3 days and no house keeping, we had to actually go down and request for our room to be turned down... Well ended up just 1 out of the 5days we stayed there they actually changed our sheets and made the bed... The last 2 days they did bring towels and take out trash but that was it! No mopping no soap or coffee cup replacements.. they just brought towels... they offered wifi and we connected but still had zero service.. This was our anniversary trip and it was ruined sadly by the place we chose to stay... We will not ever make that mistake again! The town is small and options are slim but sleeping in a truck would have been better than staying at the Soda Butte Lodge...
