Chaos, but charming chaos. The main paths are wide, but that doesn't stop near‑misses from happening every few minutes. You learn quickly that eye contact is optional and braking is a luxury. Still, there's something undeniably lively about it: the energy, the noise, the constant movement. It's the opposite of remote -- you're never alone, even when you wish you were. Find a quieter corner and the park shows its softer side. Lakes, trees, open lawns, and the occasional heron staring at you like it knows something you don't. It's peaceful, but with that faint undertone of "someone is definitely smoking something nearby." Classic Amsterdam ambiance. And unlike the more feral parks on the city's edges, Vondelpark keeps its surprises relatively tame. No cows. No sanctioned adult zones tucked into the woods. Just people, lots of them, all doing their best to coexist without turning the place into a full‑contact sport. It is never to crowded, especially the mornings are nice. There are all kinds of trees, birds (yay!) and other small forest animals. It is great to walk and relax. Inside the forest are many paths, big ones and small ones and you can easily spend a few hours strolling around this place. It is also very popular with dog owners. If you own a car and live around Amsterdam, I highly recommend going here, because it not a far drive from Amsterdam. If you have kids; near the parking lot is a playground and a children's farm with cute animals.

We loved coming here as children, to learn about the forest or do treasure hunts. We would gather beukenootjes (beech nuts?) here, which we would bake into delicious cookies with the help of a recipe my mother once found in the NRC. I went back today with my baby brother who is three now, and we had a great time going to the playground and the petting zoo. When he's a little older, we'll take him for walks here, and perhaps make beukenotekoekjes with him too.

On our way back to our hotel after a day at Micropia, we passed through Wertheimpark, named after…read moreentrepreneur and philanthropist Abraham Carel Wertheim (1832 to 1897). It's a fairly small park, surrounded by a fence with the Nieuwe Herengracht canal on one side. In the park is a fountain, although it was dry when we were there. There is also a memorial to remember the victims of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Unfortunately I don't recall seeing the memorial, which is a shame. Overall, not a particularly interesting park. Nice small park in the outskirts of the city center. There are a few monuments inside this park but…read moreit is more passive than a park for playing. Nice place to sit and meditate or reflect on the monuments. One is if correct a WWII monument and other is an interesting ground display of the broken glass symbolizing Auschwitz. It was quite moving especially since it was wet, gray, and cold outside on the day I visited. There is no admission charge to enter the park and you can stay as long as you with. I believe it is pet friendly as there were quite a few dogs playing with their owners.

Fantastic Park for little kids!…read more This park is great! We visited Amsterdam with our 7 year old son, and we saw a lot of history and culture. It was good to go to Amstelpark on a warm day and do all the little kid things. We biked to and through the park. We splashed in the big wadding pool, rode the small train through the park, tried to go to the petting zoo but it closes at 3pm (but we still saw some animals), my son played in the playgrounds, and rode on the little rides. He was so happy. (I would say 7 or 8 years old would be the oldest ages that would really enjoy this. Ideal for 3-6 year olds).
