Philippe Medawar Fine Jewelers

I took a family member's vintage watch, not a fancy one, in to have it cleaned. I found Mr Medawar…read moreto be patronizing at the time and was astounded at what he charged me to clean a watch, over $1,000. When I picked it up, he told me (patronizingly again) that he'd spent far more time working on it than he'd expected, and what a favor he was doing for me by not charging more than the original estimate. A couple of weeks ago, same watch started running fast, but after my initial experience at Phillipe Medwar, I was not going back to him for repair. I took it to another certified watchmaker who told me my watch had been oiled with some cheap gunk used by jewelers when they don't want to take it apart to give it real service. He said this gunk was the butt of jokes among watch repairers. He cleaned it (for real this time) for *$150*. Interestingly, the second watchmaker had been offered a job by one of the Medawars after he graduated from his program and he decided not to take it based on his interaction with them. He went on to own two jewelry stores of his own in central Michigan. So he seems pretty legit. I concur with other reviewers who mentioned Mr. Medawar's ego. That and the way he spoke to me as if I was an idiot had already convinced me I would never go back. My now perfectly working watch with the $150 cleaning confirms it.

My fiancé purchased a diamond and Phillippe ordered a special box for it. The surprise proposal was perfect and I was delighted that it came with the opportunity to custom design a ring with Phillippe! He was friendly and warm. He really listened to my thoughts as we looked through his styles and we quickly narrowed down what direction I wanted. The ring took three weeks, but was SO worth the wait. I'm getting endless compliments and I find myself meditating regularly because I'm so entranced when the sun or any light hits it. The ring feels so ME! Prices here are not cheap and you cannot just walk in and shop. You must set up an appointment first. This is because they only sell a certain caliber of diamond and the settings are engineered and created in house. They only have a small handful of settings that are prong. All of Phillippe's bezeled and tension settings are a work of ART. People must understand how this is different from the average jewelers everyone recognizes the name of. His work is meant to be cherished and family heirlooms. His business is clean and his staff is courteous. 10000/10!

I've been trusting Herkner with my Jewelry needs for 20 years now. So over half of my life. Last…read moreweekend they REALLY followed through on their tradition of excellence. I had a 1910 Edwardian Era Filigree ring that needed significant repair and sizing. On very short notice the weekend before Christmas. Roxanne took the challenge and delivered. I couldn't be more grateful. Awesome customer service and value are why Herkner is still #1 in Grand Rapids for well over 100 years.

I do not wear the ring to workout, shower, do dishes, garden, or sleep and do not have a very hands-on job (sit at a computer most of the time). The metal is gold but we were never told of any precautions or concerns with the type of metal or design. We were never told to be cautious with wearing the ring daily or any risks associated with the design of the ring. Since this happened, multiple other professionals have told us the design and quality is poor, there is not enough support or prongs, all of the other diamonds were lose. Additionally, it was voiced by all the professionals we talked to that even with those concerns, what happened should never have after only 9 months and if it did, the fault is on the manufacture. Upon going to address these concerns with Herkner, we were told that the damage is "wear and tear" and they will not cover any repair costs. The associate we talked to said the damage was my fault and I should have known to not wear that ring type so often. She also did not know anything about how to utilize our insurance to cover the cost of repair but warned of the likelihood of our premium increasing so we should just pay the repair cost out of pocket now. We are very displeased with our experience, customer service, and the quality of a VERY expensive ring. I would NOT recommend this business and will be getting my ring repaired and likely redesigned elsewhere. Update to this originally review: We never did receive the information we requested from Herkner. We did get the ring fixed at a different jeweler. We also got the ring re-appraised and it came back significantly different than what Herkner appraised it for (it was adjusted to match the value at the time they completed the appraisal). The new jeweler proved we were not given the quality that we paid for and were guaranteed. It's one of those situations that we could not have predicted but want to share so it limits the people that it happens to moving forward. A shame that a local business scammed us on such a meaningful and special symbol.
