Great food. Freshly prepared. Small and cosy and not expensive. Always welcoming and service is fast and hot. Recommended.

This was our splurge meal. It was also one of the best meals I had while in Wales…read more The food here is more about quality and less about quantity. If you are an American and reading this review, you will know what I'm talking about. We eat too much as a society. I'll admit it myself. I am used to getting and eating a lot of food. It is amazing I am not overweight. Anyway I went off on a tangent there. Sue and I read about this place in a travel book she had for Wales. We decided on the airplane that if we were going to have one really good meal while in Wales, it would be at the Walnut Tree. Not exactly around the corner from where we were staying in Barmouth, but we had plans to be down around this part of the country so it was a no brainer. We got here quite early on a weekday evening. The night was beautiful and we decided to secure a table outside. Before we left all of the tables were filled. Not sure if that was the case inside as well as the only time I was inside was when we initially walked in and asked if we could sit outside. Started out with a refreshing elderflower drink. We decided against alcoholic drinks as we were a distance away from our home base and had a long drive back to get there. The drink was the perfect drink for a warm summer night. After our drinks came, they also brought out a small fish cake to whet the whistle. A nice extra touch that was unexpected. Our food started out with a few appetizers. A Panzanella Salad along with monkfish with tomato, chilli and ginger. Good choices both on the starters. The monkfish (similar taste to lobster) was pretty damn amazing if I have to say so myself. I just did. For my main I had suckling pig, morcilla (blood sausage) and empanadilla. The suckling pig came bone in. It was fun getting every little piece of pig that I could get. Presentation was A+ and the quality was too. Nothing wrong with this meal at all. When it came time for dessert, our server (one of a few that took care of us on this night) asked if we had any room for "puddings". He pronounced it poo-dings. You have to love the Welsh accent. We did and made room for the orange and almond cake. A good palate cleanser. This was a 5 star meal if there ever was a 5 star meal. Again, you aren't going to get a ton of food here, but you will happily leave satisfied and you won't have a gut bomb to deal with. I highly recommend this restaurant.

The service is great and the cocktails are outstanding. The dessert menu is wonderful and the flavour is always there. The restaurant is pretty small but that's not a complaint, it does make the noise level high. The toilets are outside but again that's not a problem. The location is out of the way but always worth the journey.

After several days' toil in the garden, in the rain, the present Mrs Dan and myself decided to…read morereward ourselves with a trip to sunny Monmouthshire for luncheon. http://www.thehardwick.co.uk/ Aperitifs were a Mother's Ruin for the lady and a cheeky half of Rumney Hobby Horse Bitter pour moi. A good start. We chose from the set lunch menu. At £19.50 each it's tremendous value. Some lovely bread, butter and olive oil preceded a brace of terrific starters. Mrs A polished off a delicious smoked haddock risotto cake and poached egg whilst I devoured a sensational Carpaccio of beef with an anchovy dressing. Main courses consisted of a perfectly cooked ribeye steak sandwich and chips cooked three times (twice is not enough any more, it would seem), which the better half pronounced to be "lovely", and a Pasta Rotolo containing butternut squash, goat's cheese and spinach which I will attempt to recreate myself very soon as it was cowing lush. Mrs A couldn't manage a dessert but I ploughed on and struck gold with the Amalfi Lemon Fool, which was accompanied by a shortbread biscuit the butteriness of which was indescribably marvellous. Friendly service and a relaxing ambience topped it off. We'll be going back, but next time will stay in the Angel in town and get a taxi. £60 all in, including service for one of the best lunches I've had for ages.

We visited last weekend for Sunday Lunch as a Family of 4 for a birthday celebration…read more I wouldn't call us regulars but the number of times we have visited is in double numbers. From start to finish the experience was awful. We arrived and were escorted to a table with only 2 chairs for 4 of us. My wife and I stood in a fully seated restaurant for a couple of minutes whilst the waitress went off to commandeer 2 chairs. We were then seated where we remained with no drinks, no menus, and no service for nearly half an hour. The waitress then reappeared and apologised profusely for forgetting that we were there. In fairness she offered us complimentary drinks by way of apology. No harm done at this point. These things happen. Now you would think that a real effort would be made from here to make sure service was good but sadly not. Service was slow throughout. Starters arrived in dribs and drabs. The final starter eventually arrived and was completely wrong. Starters were way below usual standard. A different waitress appeared and explained that she was aware that we had ordered something different but there was some sort of mix up with the order. Starter was taken and eventually replaced after the rest of us had finished our starters. By this time, the extension dining room was completely empty apart from the 4 of us and random people bringing small children in for a rest from the main dining room. Nearly all the food was really poor. The beef was cold and dried out. The mash potato was cold and no more than an egg cup full. The smoked baled beans were tasteless and bland. The por shoulder was actually a terrine of shredded pork and not nice. The veg for the Sunday dinners was forgotten. When we asked if there was any, a plate with 2 pieces of cauliflower and literally 4 cabbage leaves were brought out. The room was so cold, my 2 children asked for a cup of tea with desert just to warm up. The wine was also served cold (not at decent room temperature) which spoiled it completely. I asked the waiter if there was any heating and he confirmed that there was absolutely none in the extension. When the bill was presented, the waitress immediately apologised for our experience and informed us that they had taken 25% off the bill. The acknowledgement was appreciated but did not make up in any way for the bad service, food and temperature. The whole thing really was so bad we will Never return. SO Goodbye Hardwick. It is a real shame that this restaurant has gone so far downhill as it used to be really good.
