I'm glad I didn't read the reviews before I found Bernie's at the Brussels midi train station. We…read morewalked through the whole station looking for something to eat for a late lunch. There were many organic and vegan type places, or your standard fast food "takeaway" counters. But then we found Bernie's and based on what we saw, we decided to eat there. Couldn't have been more surprised and pleased. The bun did have a lot of seeds on but it was delicious, soft and large enough to cover the burgers. My husband had a double burger and it was very good. I had the lamb burger and I loved it. The fries were fresh and hot. Yes we paid a little bit more than a fast food joint but we felt like we got more. We had no complaints and would go back again. BTW, even though it was a counter service, the service was friendly and efficient also. I have found that a smile and courtesy always are returned in kind.

Sadly, it's pretty rough around the edges. The burgers look good. Like they should look good, but when you get them they kinda look sad. Maybe it's the lighting? Or how they're made? Or the excessive amount of seeds in the bread? I don't know. The bread actually seems like it'd be appetizing and for the most part my meal was pretty good, albeit more on the experimental side of flavor notes, in my opinion. I wanted the Veggie burger, but was quickly informed it was out, so opted for their "new" Crispy Chicken. A majority of Bernie's menu is beef patties with only two non-red meat options. Maybe their beef burgers are better than their chicken? I'd have really liked to have tried the veggie though, but oh well. Anyways, the chicken was a standard chicken filet of the frozen processed kind. You know the drill. The breading was really greasy, but the sandwich itself wasn't bad. I'm used to chicken sandwiches being a bit more simplistic in condiments and toppings usually the mayo and lettuce drill with an occasional tomato thrown in. Bernie's crispy chicken had a tapenade with a honey dijon, red onion, spring mix and more. This just sounded good. I was pretty excited, but it ended up being an odd composition of flavors. So what? It wasn't for me. Still decent meal. I also ordered fries which scored me a cone from Fritkots next door. They don't seem to share a grill exactly, but if you get fries in your order it'll be from them. Fries were okay. I'm not sure how great Gare du Midi food court fare can get since so far I've been rather unimpressed with a lot of it, but if Bernie's can sort the rough edges they'd be a really nice option.

We saw this place did all-vegan momos, but I guess we shouldn't have expected much. They have a combo that comes with a mix of 5 momos (€11 for lunch and €14 dinner if steamed; +€1 for fried), a soup, and veggies. Both my wife & I tried the steamed version, The food came out in 10 minutes or so. The momos were far from authentic and not all that great: the shiitake mushroom was my favourite; the peanut and broccoli one had a bizarre texture; and the squash one just didn't work. They don't serve them with traditional momo dipping sauces, but with a sort of gyoza-like sauce, which doesn't work that well. The soup seemed like a watery split pea soup (why is this served at a momo place?), and the veggies were simply cooked and served with a soy-like sauce. Honestly, this was a pretty sad meal. The portion was also pretty weak for the value -- we needed to stop for more food later. The food wasn't bad-tasting, just bland, and puzzling given what the place is apparently supposed to be. I wouldn't return, but Brussels' vegan scene is still immature, so I guess that's how places like this can exist.

The waffle was somehow gummy and oily at the same time, and it was served on a small board that - with the runny yolk situation and piled spinach - made an absolute mess on the table and ground beneath. Last, the avocado was massively brown and was served anyway - we didn't complain or send it back mostly because we had a time limit, but I was unpleasantly surprised at their standard of fare

Waffles and sandwiches were both delicious. Waffles are hard to replicate but these are close, the sandwiches are indistinguishable from actually being gluten. It's a few steps off the big touristy square so it shouldn't even be out of your way. Service is hit and miss so be ready to just speak up. They like it when you know what you want and don't have questions but they will begrudgingly help you. We went more than once and had only one weak service experience and again, we got our food without issue in the end.
