There is a large evening menu, and three vegetarian choices which always stay the same (stuffed peppers, tomato pasta and nut bake). Handy for gluten-free diets as many meals are labelled Coeliac-safe. It's a child-friendly pub (like so many now) which suits most people I suppose. However, I have been put off my meal two or three times when small shrieking children have been running about on the bare wooden floors. UPDATE APRIL 2009: We went for lunch there with friends today and I must say we were not impressed. The person behind the bar was not particularly friendly or welcoming. She forgot to bring my coffee for a long time. That was disappointing too - just boring filter coffee (no lattes or cappucinos etc) and only served with some cold milk in a jug - not even cream offered. Later my friend's ordered Coke was completely forgotten about as well! We thought that some of the meals were very overpriced for what we got. I had a tiny baked potato which came with a bit of undressed salad. It was served on a large plate which was half empty. The vegetable lasagne was nearly £9 and was the only vegetarian meal on the lunchtime menu other than the baked potato. Veggie lasagne - one of the most boring meals anyone could offer a vegetarian as we've had so many throughout the years! It was a nice quiet place to sit and talk today but that's the only good thing I can find to say about it. We've decided we don't want to go back, not even in the evening when there's more choice on the menu, because it's just not a friendly atmosphere and the coffee is dreadful.

There are dining areas at either end at tables of various sizes. Although there were several people dining we still found a quiet and comfortable place to sit. The landlady and her daughter were very pleasant and the younger girl who was serving the meals at the tables was really delightful, so friendly and helpful. My only criticisms are that the landlady forgot to make my coffee (funny that's happened to me in two pubs within a week!) and there was only one vegetarian meal on the menu/specials board, despite a huge choice for the meat eaters. There is a small car park out the front and the toilets are clean and well looked after.

It's a large place, but it's still advisable to book - they have a good reputation now, and often it's difficult to get a table on a Saturday night. The menu offers a good range of food, with something for everyone. They offer good steaks, lamb shanks (lush!), chicken in a range of sauces etc, and there's always something tempting on their specials board. There's a nice atmosphere in the pub, and they don't hurry you away from your table, if you want to sit around and chat over a drink. Families of all ages are welcome as well.
