With the demise of places such as Kilmarnock's Coffee Club, Small Talk is their favourite day time venue. When mother had more appetite, it would have been soup & scone, but now soup is all she needs. We visited on a wet Thursday in summer and although not rammed, the tables were in use again as soon as vacated. Although not fine dining, there is integrity in the cooking here that would put a lot of posher and more expensive venues to shame. The down-to-earth hospitality of the female staff is second to none. The menu is the usual tearoom fare - soups, sandwiches, baked potatoes, home baking. I can see a lot of effort goes into the home baking, which is quite extensive and even ambitious (e.g. homemade pecan pie). Soup is obviously a big seller, as they have three soups of the day. I had the spicy sweet potato & carrot, mother had some kind of tomato soup, and the third was a turkey broth. Both our soups were well made and attractively served with a small swirl of cream on top. The bread is only OK - we both ate our half slice of seeded and left the white. Pricing is at the going rate, I think £3.50 or per soup. Customers all tend to be very civilised, I would guess a mix of locals and tourists - middle aged couples, girlfriends, and the odd young family or grandmother, daughter and child. With a pushchair in there, it can start to feel a bit claustrophobic but not excessively so, and obviously making the bairns welcome just adds to the homely charm of the place! I think "well-worn tartan carpet, but with a fresh lick of paint on the walls" sums it up! You owe it to yourself to try this place if you are in the area.

The coffee was good (as you come to expect from any branch of Costa) and there is a small but delicious choice of cakes and biscuits. However I didn't much like the layout of the tables and chairs which were strung out along the walkway with everyone walking past quite nearby. I don't suppose much could be done about that, given the location, but perhaps some kind of wall around the tables would be an improvement. Otherwise, setting the tables and chairs within alcoves would be a good idea. There's a pleasant view of the River Irvine from the windows.

My husband asked for an egg roll with a side order of chips but the waitress came back to say there were no rolls left. He asked if the egg could be put inside something else instead, perhaps bread or a baguette, but was told that couldn't be done (no idea why not). In the end he decided to just have the egg on the same plate with the chips, which is what happened but he was still charged the full amount; in other words, paid for a non-existent roll! I fared better with a nice potato filled with cheese and coleslaw and our two coffees were lovely. The desserts and cakes looked delicious but we didn't have any ourselves. The cafe was clean with pleasant decor but the small tables too close together. Sitting at a table next to the wall would have been better but we didn't like the miniscule tables in the middle as they were cramped and it was irritating with people, including the waitresses, brushing past up and down the aisles. As vegetarians we found the menu very boring and lacking in imagination as there were very few options just the inevitable jacket potato, the egg, chips, or cheese sandwich. The menu was otherwise just meat or tuna, both on the printed card on the tables and the blackboard 'Specials'. There's a 'Kids' Menu' for the under 12s. For what we had, it was very expensive (coming to over £14!) not a place for us and we won't be returning!

While walking through the town I saw this new place, well it was new to me having only opened last August. For a newish sort of place I sure got that old school feel from everything, from the homemade cake display to the staff uniform was old school, a little like the Waverly tearooms. The tables where pre set for diners to sit at that consisted of vintage cutlery to the old 1930's paragon tea set. I had coffee here today and it was lovely a frothy latte in a tall glass. The Mocha Italian blend is served here and they offer to grind beans for you to take home. Many nice varieties of tea as well, plus luxury hot chocolate with marshmallows, cream and flake (wow!), and iced coffee. There are shelves on the left as you go inside selling various goodies, including dried pasta, biscuits, chilli jams, chutneys and other preserves. In the cafe you can have panini, sandwiches, tortilla wraps, salads, homemade pate, homemade soup of the day, bagels with imaginative fillings (including smoked salmon or banana and cinnamon); you'll find extra meals or snacks on the blackboard at the back of the cafe. Apparently, all produce is locally sourced wherever possible. There are milk shakes available and other soft drinks. There are shelves containing magazines and newspapers, which are free to read, on the left of the counter. I think the tables could be a bit nicer or, if not, then tablecloths would improve them, and the wooden floor is in dire need of a coat of paint as the black paint has mostly worn off and looks very scruffy. The menu is good, mainly lunch and snack food but they do gorgeous paninis and bagels with unusual fillings. The dessert menu is to die for, freshly baked cakes, millionaires shortbread, rocky road, a different selection each time I've been in but there are the staples including carrot cake. I spent a lovely Monday afternoon relaxing with my knitting and one of the many magazines they have on offer, the daily papers are there too. The staff are great, chatty and helpful. I'm also sure you can buy gifts and certain coffees that you are served too. Enjoy
