Greenmount Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in the city, overlooking Winooski from Colchester Hill. There are 1000 interments and includes the earliest record of internment in Burlington, which dates back to November of 1763.
This historic municipal cemetery contains the final resting place for Ethan Allen and a number of his family members. You can't miss it - the cemetery's most prominent feature is the Ethan Allen monument. No, not the furniture guy. Ethan Allen was a prominent figure of the Revolutionary War and founder of the State of Vermont.
You will also find a number of prominent Burlington figures, Revolutionary War veterans, Civil War veterans, past Vermont Senators, and many early professors at the University of Vermont.
When I arrived, the cemetery was gated off from driving. It's a pleasant walk and there are a few places to sit and appreciate the peace. The cemetery is no longer accepting new burials.
