If you are considering placing a loved one at Greenhaven Estates, I strongly encourage you to…read moreresearch the facility carefully and consider all available information before making a decision. According to publicly reported court records and news coverage, the facility was previously involved in a wrongful-death lawsuit involving a 100-year-old resident who wandered outside from memory care and later died from hypothermia. A Sacramento jury reportedly awarded significant damages to the resident's family. Information about that case is publicly available and worth reviewing when evaluating the facility. Separately, my family had our own experience with the facility while my aunt lived there for nearly two years. During that time, we personally observed several issues that concerned us. At one point my aunt experienced a fall in her apartment and, based on what she and our family were told, she remained on the floor for several hours before assistance arrived. Afterward, there was still visible blood on the flooring that, from what we could see, had not been properly cleaned. Two months ago my aunt suffered a stroke and had to be transferred to a higher-level care facility. Her partner still lived in their two-bedroom apartment, so rent continued to be paid while we worked through the transition. When family members returned later to collect my aunt's belongings, we found that the bathroom had not been cleaned since she left. There was still waste in the toilet that appeared to have been there for an extended period of time. Seeing that condition was very upsetting for our family. There were also communication issues with administration regarding the required 30-day move-out notice. My father was initially told by a staff member that the notice had already been handled, but later the acting administrator told him it still needed to be submitted in writing. This created confusion and additional stress during an already difficult time for our family. While we were at the facility removing my aunt's belongings, we had an uncomfortable interaction with a staff member. The tone of the interaction was confrontational, and during the exchange I was called a derogatory slur referencing my sexual orientation. That experience was extremely upsetting and not what anyone expects when dealing with a facility responsible for caring for elderly residents. Throughout the remainder of the time we were there, several staff members came by repeatedly while we were moving items, which made the situation feel tense and uncomfortable. Based on these experiences, our family ultimately decided to move our loved one to a different facility where she could receive the level of care she needs. Every family's experience may be different, but ours raised serious concerns about cleanliness, communication, and professionalism. For that reason, we are also submitting our concerns to the appropriate California oversight agencies so they can review the situation. Choosing a care facility for a loved one is an important decision. I strongly recommend visiting facilities multiple times, asking detailed questions, and reviewing public records before making a choice.

I will be the first to change this review if they can show improvement in the items mentioned.

As her condition has shifted and worsened, the care has adjusted and continued at the same high level. The owner, Rangi Giner, an active and on-site owner, treats her employees and all residents like family. And I've observed nothing but respect, kindness and patience for my mom and the other residents in all my visits throughout the years. There is very little staff turnover. So it's been easy to develop relationships with those caring for Mom. And it's easy to see how consistency in staffing has translated into consistency of care. I have felt like Rangi and her staff have not just been looking out for Mom's welfare, but mine, too, during these challenging six years. They do the basics well. They keep the place very clean. They get the residents up and groomed, out and about, and moving. They provide good, basic and well-balanced meals. There is music and activities. And they keep me informed with any changes in Mom's behavior and health. They do the intangibles well. They treat each resident as an important individual, so they adjust care and food and schedule, etc, based on each resident's needs. The staff always have smiles on their faces -- always. They have cheerful voices. There is kindness in the air. And it's pretty remarkable that it has been consistent for six years. The staff works together, helping each other, so things don't fall through the cracks. Perfect? No. There is no perfect. Just compassionate people working hard and doing their best. I feel very fortunate that I chose The Meadows for my mom's care and well-being. It's a special place.

My parents have now been here for three years, and we are constantly amazed at the level of care, compassion, patience and professionalism shown by every staff member. The caregivers are well-trained and genuinely kind, and it shows in how safe, happy, and thriving my parents are. The activities and entertainment are thoughtful and fun, and the long-term staff retention says everything about how this place is run. Our doctor once called Ranji and her team "dementia whisperers"--and he was absolutely right. The Meadows is a rare gem and we are grateful for them everyday.

We actually tried to place my mother inlaw here first but it was full. Most of the time there is a waiting list I get in. I absolutely loved this place & their caring staff & the director (Wilma). My mother inlaw would comment on how nice it was. They are kind and patient and treat their residents with respect and dignity. My mother inlaw would comment on how nice it was. It feels more like home & family than a care home. It houses a small group of residents. Staff cooks them breakfast in the mornings, make their snacks and treats. A lot of home baking. Lunch and dinner come from The Villa (one of their care homes near by). Residents can participate in the crafts they do or watch. They have a couple of Canaries the residence enjoy. There is TV in the open living space with recliners for them to enjoy. Some rooms are small (perfect size for twin bed) others are a little bigger. There are private and shared rooms. They like to encourage residents to be out and socializing. They have a lovely patio outside. The facility is nestled in a nice quiet neighborhood. My mother inlaw passed away here and staff and hospice we very kind and compassionate to the very end. I can't express how thankful we were to find this place. I could sleep at night knowing she was being well cared for.

The staff understand the elderly and all of their needs. They have cared for them, while making them feel as though they were the part of a larger, extended family. The grounds are lovely, and Dad has the joy of watching nature and taking part in the gardening and watering of the tomato plants. Mom enjoyed the interaction with the other residents, and particularly liked taking part in the art activities~~~something that I had no idea would be such a favorite. Their room is spacious with large windows. They have all the issues that typically plague the elderly---they need help in the bathroom, bathing, transferring. They cannot medicate themselves. Meals must be provided. From a monetary standpoint, it has been a good exchange for the support that they have needed. We had some fluid moments, and I am very pleased that Spanish Bay accommodated their needs at a price point that was fair for all. After being their caregiver for several years, it wasn't easy letting them go. I have to say that Spanish Bay has been as supportive of me and my family as they have been of the folks.
