Greengate Garden Centres - Nurseries & Gardening Near Me - Calgary, Alberta

I am dumbfounded at their prices and poor service. Their tropical plants are literally 500% higher in price for some plants than other places. I picked out a plant that was marked $12.99 on the rack and when I got to the cash, it rang up at $26.99. I told the cashier, that is not the marked price. She just said "oh?" No offer to double check the price or adjust to align with scanning code of practice. Needless to say I did not buy it. I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 because of their good selection. Be prepared to pay through the nose for that good selection however. read more

Calgary has two seasons, winter and summer, so why not surround yourself with luscious greenery and blooms while you can! From classic perennials and annuals to something more exotic, you will find it here. And, as a bonus, if you wander through the facility like a lost puppy, someone will find you and hold your hand through the process of selecting your purchase! Terrible service. They swindle customers. Bought what i thought was a bonsai. It turns it was fake. Paid $48. no refund given. On top of it, the clerk Rob was threatening to man handle me. He had no business to interfere. they claim tags on pots are not theirs. No accountability. I would never go back to this place again. Pls go there at your own peril. I'll admit that I cannot expect a full selection of perennials when I choose to shop in August, but their selection was pathetic. Many of the plants were in poor condition, but they still wanted full price, even for the sickest looking plants. Which brings me to my primary complaint. Their prices are outrageous. Truly ridiculous. On top of that, I noticed several plants that were zone 5. Why even sell something that will not survive in Calgary. I. Miss. Sunnyside. :( read more

I packaged up some samples of the weed, took several pictures of the lawn infestation and proceeded to Greengate for some advice on what it was and how to get rid of it. Two staffers, one talking on the phone and the other scratching her butt finally interrupted what they were doing to inquire what I was looking for. Butt scratcher took a quick look at my samples, and proclaimed it to be clover. She didn't want to look at the pictures. Had either of them done so, they should have realized it wasn't clover. They both quickly advised that Killex was the only thing that would get rid of the weed. I have since determined on my own that the weed is Creeping Bellflower which has arrived courtesy of a neighbourhood lawn. And No. Killex is not known to be effective on this stuff. And No. I will never again be bothered to make the short drive to Greengate. read more

Top of the Crop! I've been shopping for garden and Christmas stuff at Greengate for years... actually, since Christmas 1998 - the first time I purchased a Christmas tree that I didn't cut out of the forest... years later I actually bough an artificial Christmas tree from Greengate... 2004... which we still have today and it still looks amazing... Anyway... Here's what I love about Greengate! It's a family owned business for who knows know how long... 14 years or so? The owners work there and they love what they do. The staff are great too - and I've noticed they're still around year after year ...low staff turnover means something doesn't it? You know what I don't like? I don't like being lost, dazed and confused in isle 37.5 in one of them big box stores - I ask for help and they say, "oh, it's in isle 42, half way down, and look up 6 feet or so" ...and then they walk away. "Um... pardon?" I'm not really much better off ...and who knew you had 4.5 more isles then the ones I thought you had? Greengate staff take you right to the product you're looking for... huge time saver for me as I couldn't tell the difference from a pine tree and a weeping willow if you hit me over the head with either one of them. By the way - did you know that just because something grows in one area of Calgary doesn't mean it will grow in another... unless it's a dandelion ;-) Loads of parking, amazing selection, and free hot apple cider at Christmas :-) Greengate gives back to the community. They sponsor community sports from junior athletics to amateur tournaments. One of the biggest and be Stampede Breakfasts in the city! My daughter loves the beans and the face painting. I guess what I really like about Greengate is that it's been 13 years and I still drive the 30 minutes one way to buy from them when there's a Lowes, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, SuperStore and Walmart a heck of a lot closer. This store is majorly overpriced. Paid $15.99 for Pro Mix Vermiculite 9L, and discovered after the same product and size costs $8.99 at Canadian Tire. Likewise for the Bone Meal. I had shopped at Golden Acres in this location many years ago. I had not realized it changed ownership. There were other items I discovered after that were more than double what I had paid in the past. I won't be back. I would suggest people shop around as things are much cheaper elsewhere. Pretty shocked at how overpriced this place is, you're better off at literally any other garden centre in Calgary. Bonsai trees for double and sometimes triple the price you'd get the exact same bonsai at Plant for, a fiddle leaf fig of the same size is $120 here and $60 at Golden Acre, I could go on but you get the jist. They have a nice selection of unreasonably priced plants and accessories. Their prices are far too high in comparison to other Garden Centres in Calgary. If paying higher prices is not a concern and this place is convenient for you then you may like it. There was disorganization and clutter in some parts of the store. Their staff is knowledgable and helpful, but busy. I won't likely return here. There are better options. read more

I have always preferred going to this place simply because it has the largest variety and you will always find someone there who is an expert on the plant you are buying and can answer your questions. Also compared to other garden centers it is one of the cheapest despite having the best quality and it guarantees their trees for either a year or five. Today I discovered that they also have the best customer service in town, despite the fact that they were super busy and that i was not buying much, they were willing to go the extra mile to keep me happy without me even asking. I am glad we have them in Calgary and i will definitely recommend them to anybody. read more

I live up in Coventry Hills and will drive 30+ minutes across town to shop here. This is the only garden centre I will shop at. Every time it go here they sincerely want to help, they don't bother me or crowd me but genuinely, warmly welcome me each time I've walked in busy day or slow day. Plants I want I can always count on them having in stock. They take the time to bring things to your attention regarding care for the plant and don't run off to help another customer who has just walked in because they are busy. As I go through the store and have questions or seeking something else one of their friendly staff will stay with you and help you along the way. When I have stopped in for advice because of problems with plants at home they immediately have an answer and suggestion. When one of my indoor plants had aphids it was as good as garbage, when my lilac tree had discolouration on leave last summer it was because of our wet spring. I've never planted bulbs til last fall and they shared tricks with me to be sure they came up in the spring. Excellent Service! Competitive prices, good parking and they genuinely treated you as a valued customer they hope to have back and I'll see you in the spring! read more
