I walked into Woodsy Garden with the goal of finding my dear mother a plant for her already plant-filled flat. I'm not talking about a little pot plant, I'm talking five feet talk mini tree plants. It adds a certain charm to the home that I've very much come accustomed to. The thing I like about this store was that it isn't just a flower store, it offers a whole range of goods and the lady in charge is more than happy to take you for a tour. Seriously, I didn't even ask, she just popped up out of one of the plants with a beaming smile and began describing the life span and origin of each of her products. In the end I had to cut her short and just as for the biggest, cheapest thing she had. She pointed out a few thing, all suitable in size just not for anything else. For example a spherical cactus the size of two big watermelons, not so good for the rampaging cats I'd assume. There was a lovely pair of purple orchids for a decent price but for the same reason as the cactus I doubt they would have lasted long. In the end I left Woodsy Garden with a small fern that would take up some important room on the dinner table, no doubt. I thanked the kind lady, paid and left. All said and done I'd return to the store, mainly because I don't know any other flower shops and because I know the range of products she sells. The only thing that seemed strange to me was that she knew almost too much about the plants. I made me think, does this fern really come from Holland or did she just tell me that so I'd buy it? Anyway, it's green, sort of pretty, and my mum likes it.

So, this morning we set ourselves to find a simple but pretty basket in Wan Chai. You can find a ton of places that are doing this right now, but it's not so easy to find the right one, as I've found that they look very similar and sometimes too similar. Also, in most instances you can pick what you want from a range of fruits and flowers but the baskets are all the same. As we came down from the Pak Tai Temple in Stone Nullah Lane, we saw this little shop and decided to give it a go. The lovely lady in charge seemed to be in a big hurry, arranging a huge fruits basket, which looked pretty amazing. We asked for a 'basket for the Mid-Autumn Festival' and she said, seemingly sorry to disappoint us that she had run out of fruits! As we were planning to make an order, rather than buying it on the spot, she said she could do it then! We asked for prices and even though they were fair (starting at 600HKD), we hesitated for a second. In the back of our minds, we had a DIY basket, which we considered more special and a nicer present for our great hosts. The lady explained to us that prices of fruits and flowers go up by as much as 40% during this time of the year and recommended us to try one of the stalls in the wet market, for which she even gave us a business card. Their baskets were amazing, and she also sells flowers for special occasions, but I'm mainly reviewing this place because she has really honest and helpful, and even though she was busy, she took the time to explain all that to us.

The Flower Market is filled with so many beautiful plants. Fresh cut blooms. Bonsai trees. Exotic…read moreplants. Citrus trees. And beautiful bouquets. Orchids, roses, bougainvilleas, sunflowers. Such a treat to see and smell so many fragrant blooms. Interesting to also learn about the "Good Fortune Plants." The Lucky Bamboo arrangements are a popular gift. So many Bonsai trees. The miniature trees have been part of local culture for generations. Mandarin trees are a symbol of good fortune and prosperity. Lucky Bamboo is for a happy and peaceful home. Orchids are a symbol of nobility. Peonies represent prosperity and peace. Daffodils are for good luck. Definitely worth a stroll to enjoy the beautiful blooms at the Flower Market in Kowloon.

If I had a bottomless budget, I would have used their flowers for my entire wedding! They have many pre-made domes of varying sizes that you can buy off the shelf. They also have several drawers filled with different flower sizes and colours that you can pick and choose to replace the pre-made floral arrangements given it's not too complicated. The girl who works there is the sweetest and should win some sort of award for patience. They offer some laser cutting options for small signs for their domes as well. My office was in the area and I would often visit their store just to see what was new and every now and then there would be a new product.
