What's up with the service here? I avoid this place like the plague simply because I refuse to walk into a store where I'm going to be either ignored, growled at or dismissed by one of the staff. You would think that people employed to work at a store that promotes healthy, principled, community minded living would reflect some of these characters- not at the Green Grocer. I distinctly get the feeling that I'm burdening them when I walk in to purchase something from their store. "Oh I'm sorry, you interrupted my doing nothing. How dare you." HOW DARE YOU, Green Grocer girl. How dare YOU. It is a good store to get things like moon calendars, healthy snacks, natural supplements, seeds, remedies and cure alls. The products are great. The Green Grocer is unique in that it's one of the only stores of it's kind in the area. I do like having a shop like the Green Grocer handy for those times when I'm chasing some obscure ingredient that can only be found in a health food store. However, I struggle to see how the place stays alive. It has a shabby, unkempt feel to it and there's not a time I've been in there when I've received overly friendly service. The vibe is that they couldn't care less whether customers came in or not. This said, they stock a small but good range of organic dairy products, including the lovely Barambah; pre-packaged Sol Bread; a good range of herbal and organic tea; plus quite a few things in bulk bins. Whoa, I can't believe I haven't entered this place sooner! I used to always walk past this place while on an errand or on route to another place, glancing inside at the shelves bedecked with glistening bottles and all kinds of unique goodies and wishing I could find the time to explore its depths. Btw I'm that type of person who likes taking their time going over pretty much every single product (thinking 'I'll buy you when I have the money') so I would need at least a couple of hours slowly walking around the store to be satisfied. So that's why I was really surprised to read that the staff were getting a bad rep on the reviews here - at worst they didn't smile or they interjected my trancelike scruitiny of the products with a 'can I help you?' (and anyways that's considered doing their job), but they were never, ever rude or unprofessional. In fact, one day where I wasn't feeling 100% and somehow ended up inside the store, I struck up a conversation with the owner James about it and he was nothing short of being empathetic and helpful. He genuinely listened and showed me a product that may help, and even told me to take a photo of it as he understands how people like doing their research before commiting to buy. I really can't remember the last time receiving service as good as this!!! The pricings are also quite reasonable. While for some of the foods such as health bars, dried organic fruits etc you would find cheaper alternatives in the big supermarkets now that they have health food aisles, there are also some specialty brands that you can't find anywhere else for similar prices. As for the eco-friendly products such as toothbrushes, toothpastes, lotions and creams etc and the alternative medicines, this is your one-stop shop. Not only is the quality better than the supermarkets' mass produced brands (even their eco friendly lines), the pricings is on par or better even than online. And for other financially challenged uni students like me, there is a 'bargain bin' of all kinds of reduced goodies, some over 50% reduced, which I admit is my go-to whenever I visit the shop. The fact that I'm willing to share this, despite being a jealous **** for bargains, lest anyone steals my bargains, because I really love my bargains, really shows that I really want to promote this lovely store amidst the competition from supermarkets and the online stores. Whatever shortcomings it may have, I would feel like I've lost something precious if this place ever closes. read more

Every now and then when afflicted by some kind of illness I'll check out the Green Grocer for one of their natural remedies. There's something very wholesome and old-worldly about having a natural decoction measured out for you into a little glass bottle and hand labeled. I've tried their cough syrup mixture and found it was quite helpful in treating my cough. Ask for the one containing wild cherry if you ever want natural relief from a persistent cough. It has a strong, bitter taste that lets you know that its working. From memory it cost a bit over $10 but lasted for quite a while, with the directions being to dilute it in water (like cordial). It seemed to work and offer temporary relief of the symptoms, and though I haven't abandoned modern Western medicine yet, the experience definitely opened my eyes to the benefits of natural medicine. If you ever want to feel REALLY unhealthy, I suggest you visit the Green Grocer in west end. This place is bursting at the seams with health and vitality. But fear not my pasty friend! This Green Grocer most likely has a fix for whatever ails you. What I love about this store is the huge range of products available, whether you require healthy noms such as organic bran, LSA mix or free-range eggs to herbs, vitamins and other delectable healthy goodies. The staff do seem a bit aloof at times, but are generally knowledgeable and have good tips on green livin'. If you're short of Gingko or have an urge for a package of Fair-Trade chocolate I suggest you give Green Grocer a try. read more

This is the kind of place you would only find in West End. The hand painted sign gives a hint of the display of less sterile appearance you'll find inside. Not that it isn't clean - in fact it has an endearing, slightly scruffy appearance, much like Russel Brand. The sign proclaims they sell healthy foods and it does not lie. You'll find a wide range of loose nuts and grains, loads of organic products and much more. It's quite a small place but it packs a punch and offers all the right stuff to please health food enthusiasts. Apart from vegetables, that you'll have to get elsewhere. read more

so I have been resident of West end for a long time. and known about Green Grocer. Put it this way. they have stuff. Good stuff. Even Great stuff. But in order to go there. you have to put up with terrible service. You are ignored. you will have your eyes rolled at quite possibly.It's usually always the women too! Even my girlfriend says they arent cool to her either! And you will pay for kidnapped children prices for goods. its usually inflated. so 2 liter organic non homogenized RAW milk wold be about $5-6.50 ish (you can buy it from the farmer for $4.20 if you pickup yourself. just so you have context. well at green grocer its almost $9. It's pretty much the same story for sugar, flour, rice ect. they have it! its just they expect to be paid. read more

I have to agree with a lot of the reviews here. While the Green Grocer is famed and loved, it seems to be a select group of friends. I prefer going into the organic shops in Paddo even though this is my local. The few times I have been, the service is not unfriendly, but it is perfunctory. They have a great selection of seaweeds, but my favourite is to get the red dates. I don't really know that there is anything there that you can't get elsewhere so it really comes down to whether this is convenient to you. They have a good range of heirloom seeds, delicious fruit paddlepops, good range of dried goods, some fresh fruit n veg, and the whole beans n grain by weight. A few other goods such as drink bottles et al. It is right at the 199 bus stop, so that makes it an easy treat shop (goody balls, ice cream) while you wait for your ride. Being health food, your goods are going to cost more than home brand supermarket stuff. You know the drill! read more

What a GREAT find! I found the staff VERY friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, & thank GOOD, not overly 'professional'. Perhaps the people who reported 'unfriendly staff' were not lucky enough to be there on the day the lovely Owner or manager was there [both times I've been there now] or MAYBE misconstrued an 'allowing you to browse' philosophy as aloof!? I found a VERY pleasant & WELL-stocked shop. AND.. I found product that I'd been unable to find in 2 other very well known 'Health Food' shops, along with product I'd already bought at those other shops for about HALF the price I'd already paid :-/ I'll be heading to The Green Grocer FIRST in future. & NO! Some time ago I happened to be suffering from drug induced Reflux and checked out Green Grocer for any solution. I found them very friendly and knowledgeable. They recommended Slippery Elm to me, explaining in detail and even demonstrating how to take it as a drink. I did as advised and it worked. As a result, my Reflux is gone without medications! Green Grocer is a health food store which you can count on for natural remedies. And, to cater to the market demand, they have been offering more and more organic products at reasonable prices to make customers' lives easier, happier and healthier. I was a long term customer of West End Green Grocer buying mostly Coltsfoot and Mugwort, both as a tobacco substitute and health drink, Last month I purchased both products. The Coltsfoot cannot be used as it's full of sticks, small hard leaf parts, grit and grounded particles. There is nothing good to separate from the rubbish; it feels to have been swept up from the floor. The Mugwort was better with about 75% sticks, grit and dust. The labels are the only thing that identifies your products as Coltsfoot or Mugwort. I called at your store, the Manager was unavailable, however I left thinking that you would contact the supplier. I went to the internet and I believe from your supplier HERB WHOLESALERS Bradley Ct Greenbank purchased 1Kg of Coltsfoot. When it arrived it turned out to be the SAME RUBBISH. I contacted Herb Wholesalers; they immediately blamed everything except defending the quality of their product. Herb Wholesalers said, No one else had complained, it looked alright to them, and requested me to send it all back, and ignored my request to say they would then refund my money. I again contacted your store by email outlining my failure to obtain useable Coltsfoot or Mugwort. I have received no response from you. I'm asking why your suppliers treat you with disrespect, selling this rubbish to a store that identifies with West End culture. Over a long period of time and experience at your store - I can only conclude that you don't look at your own products, displaying no quality control or have serious product knowledge, you just take what you're given. I don't usually write reviews but I am compelled to after consecutive bad experiences here. Why so rude? Even after meeting poor service a few years ago, I have been to this shop a few times since out of pure convenience only to be consistently let down by their service. Today will be my last visit. Very condescending, judgemental and smug. I felt like I was almost getting into an argument with the guy working there because he kept making assumptions on my knowledge of my skin condition I have been trying to cure. There were only so many times I felt comfortable correcting him (for the most part it was random unsolicited advice about stuff like the women's cycle like I hadn't gone through puberty and that eating healthily is healthy) so I spent a lot of our interaction being berated. At one point he was telling me how to google something, talking louder and louder while looking over my shoulder at the people in the shop as if to try and humiliate me. This is after I had told him how I had been doing my own research on the internet.. so It was obvious that he has some insecurities and likes to put people down. I'm a paying customer? Who cares if I actually did need help with Google haha "L.O.L"? Despite this I ended up buying the herbal tonic he advised me to get (echinacea) even though I noticed the smarmy look exchanged between him and the other girl working there while he was making 'a sale'. I actually do believe it will work (at the very least be good for my cold) and I was looking for something to try, so I don't feel as if I have been swindled, so why make it as if I had been? Completely unnecessary and disrespectful. The equivalent to what this store is to people into natural medicine is a pharmacy, so maybe they should approach their business and customer service that way. There is absolutely no need for the attitude. Please go elsewhere, don't give these malicious, silly people the satisfaction and your precious hard earned money. read more
