Owner is arrogant and condescending. I purchased $10,000 worth of cork flooring, then two weeks later, they had a sale 15% off. I contacted them and asked for the discount since it was within 30 days and the owner laughed. Many professional companies offer price protection within 30 days of purchase, unfortunately this is not one. Its not so much the discount, its the manner in which Joel handled the conversation. Subsequently, I planned on another purchase in May 2025 for retail of almost $12,000 but now will find another company. The smug attitude of the owner and the lack of a reasonable price protection policy leads me to think "buyer beware". I have high doubts this company would stand behind its products if any issues arrive. I say, find another company. We as consumers need to make businesses honerable by shopping elsewhere. Ordered 4 tubes of a limestone colored sealant and the next day received an email from Melanny saying they only had 3 in stock. "I'll just take the three then", I said. Ten minutes later: "Sorry, we just sold the last 3 tubes and we won't have any more in stock for 3 months, so now your choices are gray or white." So even though my order was processed the previous night, and I had already been charged she turns around and sells the sealant to someone else who ordered five minutes ago. After expressing how unfair that was, she dismissed me, and then wished me luck on my current project. I never write reviews, but this treatment was so blatantly unfair, it actually bummed me out. Imagine you went to the grocery store for bananas. There's one bunch left. You put them in your cart, you pay for them, then the cashier gives you your money back and sells them to the next person in line. read more

The business owner, Joel, was kind beyond words. In my search for healthier stain products I came across Green Building Material's website and a youtube video by Joel. He went out of his way to spend almost an hour to speak with me in Seattle over the phone regarding my questions. Joel has so much knowledge about VOCs/chemicals components and how to interpret SDSs for the products (and my utmost kudos to him because he seems all self-taught from his researches and experiences in the field!). He let me know which products may be safer options for me and told me that Green Building Material tests all the products by themselves before they sell them. It's a testament to their genuine commitment to customer care. I'll buy from their online store as much as I can whenever I need to buy green and healthy products. Thank you, Joel!! read more

Green Building Supply furnished some low or no VOC sealants and stains. What I appreciate about them is that they have researched what is healthy for the home. Some of it is a bit pricey, but it is worth it considering that it does not produce allergies and sickness like the cheap stuff does. read more

While I appreciate that this company stocks some safer alternatives, I found dealing with them to be disappointing. I ordered some flooring samples and when they arrived I noticed a chemical odor. I contacted them about this and received a vague, general reply. When I asked more specific questions I received no further response. I tried two different people at the company with the same results. As a result I don't trust this company and I wouldn't buy anything from them without doing my own research read more

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. One-stop shopping where you don't have to worry and conduct extensive scientific research on every product you look at? Sign me up! The work is already done for you. We are renovating our newly purchased home and I placed an order for bamboo flooring over the phone with Cynthia, whose patience and dedication to customer service are second to none. Renovations are pretty stressful, especially when you're trying to track down the healthiest products possible for a home with small children. Be aware of the products they sell. I ordered the click floating cork floor. We are not chemically sensitive but we wanted to have an environmentally responsible floor and no offgassing odors. I ordered samples and they looked great and had no odor. Then the actual flooring arrived and the smell is so intense of chemicals that we have not been able to install it. I stacked the boxes in a powder room and the smell is so strong we cannot breathe in the room. I reached out asking for help and the owner sent me a 2 line response that it's the natural odor of the cork and the glue... then why were the samples not smelling of glue and why does the description not say that the product has to offgas glue and it will smell strongly for weeks ... months?? It's been 3 weeks and who knows how long it will take for the smell to at least diminish enough for us to even think of putting it down and spend hours in it. Something is really wrong with this product and the store is not even taking the time to listen and help us out. read more

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to find this company. In the midst of a renovation, and getting insanely expensive quotes from local service providers, I decided to try staining my own concrete floors. GBS came up on a random Google search. Their representatives were extremely knowledgeable and patient, giving me the information I needed to take on the job myself. I talked to them numerous times and their customer service was excellent every time. I'm just a little DIYer, but I was treated like I was a major corporation. What a refreshing experience, when in this day, most companies are just interested in taking your money. This company is fantastic! It is a one-stop shop for information and products, and their pricing/estimates are thorough and extremely competitive. Their website is a treasure trove of brands that chemically sensitive people need to know about, and they have posted them, along with detailed data...they've done all of the legwork for you, in fact, more consideration and info than a private consultant or shopper would do. I can't say enough, because perfection delivered deserves 10 stars, not just the 5 allowed by Yelp. Joel is a real GREEN person, not just out to make a sale--he knows about the green building industry, and is kind enough to discuss elements that you need help with, even if it concerns a product he is not carrying.
