    Aspen Garden & Landscape

Eric and Lindsey's creativity and passion truly transformed our yard, and the crew (special shoutout to Sam & Anders!) went above and beyond. If you want a team that really knows landscaping and cares about every detail, Aspen is the one to call!

Take the opportunity to grab 'em while you can. When Aspen gets busy, they get VERY busy, and Eric -- I conjecture -- don't quote me -- would need to turn away clients or ask them to go on a waiting list for the following year. Mr. Eric, Ms. Lindsey, and the rest of their brilliant crew have been working on a multi-year project for me putting in hardscape, including grading and, ultimately, changing (soft-scaping) our two acres from lawn to native plants+wildlife flower garden. Eric and crew are experts on native plants. The more I read about "lawns," the more I cringe every time I pass one on the road. Lawns, being non-native plants, they are animal-torturers -- ironically, lawns passively mow down animals. Think of lawns as efficient animal-disposal machines. Do the planet (and your neighborhood) a favor and make your land friendly to critters by insisting on native plants. Native plants and animals evolved together over millions of years, so when one's land doesn't have native plants, wildlife starves, all the way up and down the food-chain. Lawns are gasoline- and water-guzzlers. The lawn industry uses up a humongous amount of petroleum products merely in lawn-mowing. I am a "Gone the Lawn" person now. Lawns are appropriate ONLY under certain circumstances, like one is a croquet fanatic. I never knew that gardening was year-round. April is the month everyone waits for, but planning starts the previous autumn. Eric's physically-demanding season winds down in mid-November, so let him see your plot before the snows hide the land. Autumn is the best time to start brainstorming the design phase for the following April. Eric and crew are not only landscapers but artists.

    Gardening Adventures Perennials

WOW. We stumbled upon Gardening Adventures while driving through Verona on the Friday prior to…read moreMemorial Day weekend. I am just beginning to put in perennial gardens around our house and I can guarantee that we will be coming back to these lovely ladies' gardens again and again. The prices are fantastic, the plants are gorgeous and healthy, and I love that you can see everything they sell beautifully displayed in their mature backyard gardens. Knowing that the wide variety of plants are hardy for our weather is also fantastic. Even better than that, this is a business that sprouted from two friends' love of gardening. We first stopped at Karen's gardens, where she sells mostly trees, shrubs, lilies and a variety of flowering plants. After some very helpful discussion about what we were looking for, she helped us decide to go with a couple of white pines and a Thuja Giant Arbor Vitae for screening. I also picked up the first of what will be many of their gorgeous day lilies. She then directed us to Sharon's garden for hostas and ground cover (she also has most of the grasses and some other flowering plants). Sharon walked us around her mature gardens and helped us chose flowering ground cover for a difficult location. We went with two types and we also picked up a Clematis and four types of hosta. They said their inventory had been hit pretty hard after their big sale on the weekend prior. I really look forward to seeing what things look like before that sale, because it seemed to me like they had TONS of plants to choose from. There's really not much more that I can ask for than to buy from local, knowledgeable people doing what they love. If you're at all interested in planting perennials in the Madison area and haven't checked out Gardening Adventures, you're missing out.

Most of the flowers and grasses are sold in one gallon, two gallon, and larger pots. In this economy my prices are more than competitive. Advice is always free!
