Buckham regularly hosts Second Friday Art Walk receptions, along with the other local galleries downtown, like GFAC. Sometimes they host spoken word or poetry readings or, on rare occasion, an interpretive dance recital. It's really a great space for showcasing local art talent and, as one of the city's non-profits, they manage to do a lot with a little- no small feat in this day and age, and particularly in this city. It's a testament to the changing times in Flint and our city's dedication to both promoting and preserving the arts downtown. Whenever I attend one of their Art Walk receptions, I always run into a number of Flint-town regulars that I know from around our colorful downtown landscape. They serve appetizers and beer and wine at their receptions, so donations are always welcome to help defray costs, but it is not something that is pushed. Great art, great scene, great people. Some of the art exhibitions here will often be a bit quirkier than those at GFAC, but it's the ingenuity and independent spirit that drives this gallery. Once, my husband and I saw a Twinkie-themed art installation project here. Now that's entertaining!

The crowd at Buckham is filled with eccentric, free-spirited, creative types. I've seen the most unusual art shows here, but most have actually been very entertaining. Lots of upcycled "dumpster" art along with more mainstream photography and paintings. It's always surprising. The art is thought-provoking and gets people talking and that's what art is supposed to do- get people discussing it and looking at things in a different light. It's always fun to see everyone crowding around talking about the fusing of art, politics and commerce during art walk with a glass of wine in hand. Admission is free. Patrons may rent the space out for private events, too.

Really cute art gallery/shop featuring the works of Flint area artists, among others. They sell a…read morenice assortment of items, from pottery and glassworks to upcycled outlet/switch plate covers, handmade jewelry, photography and paintings, and sculptures. Price points range from very inexpensive (around $7 or less for decorative outlet/switch plate covers) to a few hundred bucks for some paintings. I like the eclectic nature of the merchandise and the fact that most of it is produced by local/Michigan artists. There's nothing cookie cutter about it. Plus, I like the idea of supporting local, independent businesses. The staff is usually pretty helpful when it comes to inquiries about pieces. I've seldom (occasionally, but not often) had to wait to receive an answer. It would be nice if they were open for more hours during the week, but since they are housed in the Flint Farmer's Market, they are only open when the market is.

Very nice, newer art gallery in Flint…read more This gallery is focused more on African American history and art and other ethnic minorities, displaying some powerful and eclectic pieces, including some very well known artwork by some of the country's most well known artists, plus lesser known or up and coming artists. They run a new art installation every several weeks and have a video display, too, featuring a short film or a video art piece. As with other galleries in the area, they are now part of the city's monthly art walk and they have a reception and usually jazz music or some other instrumental music during the festivities. I've been to this gallery several times and signed up for the E newsletter, too. It's one of the nicer, more intriguing galleries around and it's never the same dull art twice. They have everything, including paintings, multi media, videos, clay, installation art, and more. I try to make sure my family drops by at least once every month or two.

What a great addition to the downtown arts scene…read more This museum/art gallery is the new permanent home to the Mott Warsh art collection. It displays artwork crafted in a variety of mediums (paintings, fabric, charcoal, photography, mixed media, sculpture, pen & ink drawings, etc) primarily by artists of the African diaspora, showcasing the history and culture of African American artists and their legacy upon the art world today. Some of the work is infused with political statements, historical narratives, etc. It's all pretty interesting stuff and most of the pieces give one pause when thinking about how they came to be. I'm glad there is a newer voice in the local fine art scene and MW Gallery seems to be evoking necessary conversations about art, history and multiculturalism, opening a new dialogue about racial issues, too. The gallery, which opened in 2016, is a regular participant in the city's Second Friday Art Walk now, along with other galleries, shops, street artisans, and "pop up" galleries located along the Saginaw Street corridor. I try to hit the MW Gallery every month during Art Walk because it's a refreshing change of pace from some of the "watered down" art forms at some of the other galleries, yet is more serious and often significant than some of the installation art exhibitions found elsewhere. Overall, the museum is a great addition to the Second Friday Art Walk scene, filling a huge void that desperately needed satisfying. It's too bad it took so long to do so, but now there is a gallery more reflective of the city's urban roots. The collection comprises work by more than 125 different artists, most of which dating from after 1940. Some pieces in the collection are temporarily on loan at other locations, including Applewood Estate, Flint Public Library, Genesys and many more. The gallery, located in the Phoenix Building on Saginaw Street in downtown Flint, is not a large museum per se, but it does include some truly significant works of art, carefully straddling the lines between entertainment, culture and education remarkably well. I've been here several times now and I feel that the artwork shown is usually highly significant and seems to have been curated to pack the most visual and emotional punch. The gallery's small "black box" theater offers a new short film regarding art/history of the African diaspora every month as well. In short, this gallery definitely is pulsating with beautiful, thought-provoking art. Is some of it "controversial?" Perhaps to some people, but not really. I've been pretty impressed with the collection ever since I first toured the gallery last year. Now, I made a point to stop in every time the city-wide art walk is on, at the very least, just to see the latest exhibition, occasionally popping in other times as well. If you're interested in something other than "cookie cutter" style art and crave something more thought-provoking, then you might want to check out the MW Gallery. If I wanted to look at a pretty, nineteenth century watercolor, I'd go somewhere else. If I want to look at something more thought-provoking, then this is the place.

Nice little gallery that has gotten better with time…read more Before recently, I wouldn't have given this four stars, maybe three, but the art they carry and the receptions they have had lately have both been really making the grade. I attended the Susan Hagen multi-media show this winter and was amazed by her work. It seemed a little out of character for art of that caliber to be shown at such a tiny gallery, but the show was stellar. I actually bought some of her pieces. They usually carry carry an assortment of artwork culled by local artists, including polymer clay sculptures and carved wooden walking sticks, as well as paintings and some photography. The multi media show by Susan Hagen was out of this world amazing and I look forward to more events like this held here in the near future. That show did seem a bit uncharacteristic for such a small town art guild, and I don't know how they managed to get her to participate, but it was one of the best art receptions I have seen here. It was on par with the type of show launched by a large gallery. This gallery is big on supporting local fundraisers and area businesses, partnering with them to help improve the arts in the community. They also host art and craft classes here regularly for a small fee.

I've been meaning to check out this art museum for a while, and finally had the chance to make it…read moreup here to see what all the excitement's about. Let me tell you, it was totally worth it! While it's no DIA, it actually is super cool. For starters, every Saturday is free admission thanks to Huntington Bank. If you don't come here on a Saturday, that's fine, admissions only like $10 which is super cool. Staff here was friendly and helpful, and we did the whole museum in about an hour and a half. They have plenty of cool artwork here and there's LOTS to see and do. What we loved about it was the different styles of art, and it wasn't just painting. Glass sculptures, a beautiful horse made out of wood, and a library! The library was cool but we didn't go in and check out any books. They also have a QR audio guide if you want additional info about the specific piece of art that you're viewing. Lots of modern art along with historic art from several hundred years ago. They also have a glass blowing section where you can watch artists make glass art forms and they have a person giving descriptions of what their doing and why. We watched for about 15 minutes and really enjoyed the experience. Worth watching and checking out. You don't get to see glass blowing all that often, so that was a lot of fun as well. There's a gift shop and a cafe here, which had a nice variety of products. We weren't hungry so we didn't eat anything especially since had lunch immediately before coming here. I would have stopped to have a coffee if I wanted, but we were not needing coffee or snacks so we passed. Art museums are always worth the trip and if you want a wonderful experience come check this place out. It's also immediately next door to the planetarium, so you can easily walk next door (as long as the weather is cooperative) and check that out as well. It's also across the street from the Sloan Museum but I think their still closed for remodeling from what I understand. Overall a really great day trip to come up and do. Easy to find and a lot of good fun for all!

I'm doing this review a little late...sorry! I get emails though from them and pretty sure nothing…read morehas changed just yet in the last few months as far as displays go. I was there December 30, 2022 for the first time in the new place and boy were we amazed! So glad they finally finished getting it done. Going to the one in the mall in Burton wasn't cutting it anymore the older my step-son was getting. He is 10 now. Taking him to the new place, he LOVED IT! So did we!! Pretty sure we were there over 2 hours.....could've spent more time there but we caught a show at the planetarium so we had to be there on time. Will review that next. There was a lot of hands-on activities, and it was busy when we went, so I'm sure holiday breaks will always be busy. It's spread out pretty good though and if you need a break to sit, there's a large room for coloring and doing crafty things. A lot of kids were enjoying that. The huge waterfall feature with a river(?) was a HUGE hit. Tons of kids around that and they even have some rain jackets or something like that for little kids to put on as you can get very wet from this activity. There's also playscape's on different levels that had a learning twist to it. They made a neighborhood-yes, a whole neighborhood! You can go in a market, a post office, different places to learn about for young ones especially. The place is big with areas to grow and they do a-lot of events, summer camps, plenty to do here if your close enough to be involved. The car area was very spread out-I'm wondering what they will add to that if anything down the road. I have never had any problems with any staff that work for Sloan, they are always friendly and knowledgeable. They have raised their prices from what it was a year ago, but I believe this is a great addition to the area and they will use the money wisely as they grow. It's nice that you can walk around on this street to the planetarium or even the art gallery across the street. Good job!
