I was walking past Buston Reserve on my way to Parliament Station and I noticed a man photographing a woman. The woman was posing in the white curves of the Great Petition sculpture that is a monument to women's voting rights in Victoria. Very appropriate.
I like Susan Hewitt and Penelope Lee's "Great Petition" sculpture. It is a giant white furl of ribbon representing and commemorating the 1891 Women's suffrage petition. The sculpture is intersected with a path, allowing the public to move through the sculpture. Along with the sculpture there is a panel explaining the history of women's suffrage in Victoria. As political art this is hardly a controversial subject, it is long overdue recognition. read more
