I bought a pair of expensive hiking boots there in December last year and quickly found out there was a size problem. There was no problem with the return. Unfortunately I had another problem with a serious defect in the replacement boots while walking the Camino. Again there was no problem when I returned. They gathered the facts and agreed to replace the boots with a new pair. The customer service was friendly and helpful and common sensed! Ian in particular was great to deal with. I needed wetsuit booties and I got wetsuit booties. I immediately sought out a sales person after I stepped through the door and they brought me through my bootie options. Then I was brought my size for a try in the booties I opted for and they seemed right. I tried the next size down just to be sure. And I was. Bish bash bosh, booties got. (I love the fact they are called booties, makes me smile every time) To be honest my visit here today was rushed (as I was tight on time and knew what I wanted), but it appears to have a lot going on in the store. The Great Outdoors brand is a bit pricey though, this and their other main store around the corner are the only shops of their types on this side of town and they know it. But the staff know their stuff and they do stock a good range of gear. read more

Great Outdoors is a damn fine shop for water sports equipment and that sort of stuff, but a cautionary tale. If you want to buy a kayak or something, you should go to the Great Outdoors, as (a) they have a good range and their staff know what they are talking about, and (b) they pretty much have a monopoly on that particular niche, so you don't really have any other choice. Water sports gear tends to be expensive anyway, but particularly when there's only one shop in Dublin that specialises in the stuff. If you want to buy a tent or hiking gear or whatever, you can probably get stuff that's just as good a lot cheaper elsewhere. There's a shop on Talbot St whose name escapes me at the moment that sell hiking gear and tents and things, and the Army Shop on Little Mary St is great for all that stuff, and waay cheaper than the Great Outdoors. Just walk along Mary St and keep going, you can't miss it. So, Great Outdoors is very professional, very friendly staff and very expensive. Go there if the situation necessitates it (by that I mean canoe or kayak related items), otherwise (hiking, camping, tent for Oxegen) go elsewhere. read more

This is a great shop for anything 'outdoorsy' you might need. They stock big brand names like Lowe Alpine, North Face, Roxy, Quicksilver etc. They do clothing and equipment so if you were going on a surfing trip you could get everything you need from your bikini to your wetsuit to your surfboard and that waxy stuff they use (god knows for what) to put on a surf board. It can be a little pricey, but it's certainly not overpriced. Clothes/equipment for hiking/surfing/kayaking etc is always going to expensive as you're risking your safety a little, so you want the good stuff! read more

As an American strolling down Grafton street, I am overwhelmed by the foot traffic and things to take in. But once you slow down and take a look around, there is not much to it... perhaps just a (expensive) tourist attraction. For myself, there wasn't much to see or buy. I turned the corner and saw a (seemingly) small and cozy outdoors store. Upon entering I found myself lost in conversation with the staff... some locals, most international... all travelers like myself. The selection of outdoors equipment was amazing and the staff was knowledgeable. The prices were a bit high but that's because the don't sell second-rate equipment. read more

I am a die hard snowboarder and Great Outdoors is the only real store in Dublin that sells equipment. Usually if I want something, whether it be a new board, new gloves or even new socks, I will order online or go up north. What I do like about Great Outdoors is the service. The staff are very knowledgeable and they can give you lots of advice. I've made some purchases in the last few months but only because the items were on sale. My biggest gripe with the store is the cost, way over priced. Snowboarding equipment is expensive enough without having to be ripped off further. It might have something to do with high rent but still, with TK Maxx across the way, that's where I head when I need new boarding pants or jackets. read more

My experience with great outdoors is twofold. First, I bought a massive two person kayak and gear from them a few years ago. That was online and it was delivered promptly. When the delivery guy asked me did I have anything to secure it to my car with and I said no, he gave me his straps. The second time was more recently. I was getting in to scuba diving and wanted my own mask/snorkel. In terms of a mask, you have to try on before you buy. The internet is usually cheaper but too risky for a mask. I went in and tried on a few, the sales guy went through what I needed to look out for to get the perfect fit. When it came to the snorkel, they only had two types and he said the difference is only the the colour, the more expensive one has a metallic paint and he advised if I don't care about that, get the cheaper one. He talked me in to some fins and I'm glad he did, they were a very good pair and the surprising thing was that when I checked prices on the internet versus the shop, I wouldn't have saved much if anything by buying online. No doubt other items in the store are far more expensive but what I bought was a decent price it seemed. read more

I have been probably kidding myself for a few months now by thinking I'm going to do some open-water swim-races next summer. It was this very delusion that brought me to the Great Outdoors Watersports Department. The Watersports Department is hidden on a little laneway near to the Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. You'll know instantly when you've found it because of all the kayaks piled up on the street outside. Inside, they stock all manner of wet suits, oars, paddles, water skis, surfboards and other totally radical stuff like that. The staff are friendly and, with the advent of Ireland becoming an international surf destination, will hopefully stand to them. The only thing they don't stock are triathalon suits or swimming specific wet suits but the Great Outdoors mother-ship on Chatham Street does so, if like me you dream of being action man, navy seal, pro surfer or even a mermaid, the Great Outdoors is for you. read more

What an amazing adrenaline rush, I always think to myself. I gotta try it sometime. The day has not yet arrived. Some really sound and friendly staff and a great range of products and brands available but I've had two instances in the past couple of years where I've wasted a lot of money on products that were the completely wrong size for me (despite having specifically asked for help in fitting) and have only realised after use. All the staff are really eager to please but one or two could probably do with a bit more training. The items purchased were a pair of Scarpa hiking boots and a Black Diamond climbing helmet. This shop is a bit of an Aladdin's Cave for anyone interested in Outdoor Gear for hiking and stuff. I was looking for a large rucksack for a round the world trip and was recommended to try these guys by a friend.Having told the sales assistant my requirements He selected three packs for me to try on, he adjusted all three to my back length which is very important I was told. Having picked one made by Lowe Alpine He then showed me how to adjust all the straps to make sure it was comfortable and just to be sure he stuffed three tents into it so I could really get the feel of a fully loaded bag. I was really impressed with the expert advice I got which was given in a very friendly and unhurried way. I am delighted with my "Travel Trekker" rucksack even at twice what I intended to spend.
