Is there an option to give it more than 5 stars? I'll admit, I was a little skeptical about whether The Great Ocean Road would live up to my expectations. I've experienced the beautiful scenery of California's Highway 1 and when people compared The Great Ocean Road to Highway 1, I wasn't sure if it would be worth the time and effort. We rented a car first thing in the morning and headed out on our 11 hour journey. Yes, it was rushed but we simply did not have more time as we only budgeted 2 days in Melbourne. If we had more time, I would have liked to break it up to 2 or 3 days. It took about an hour to get out of the city to the starting point in Torquay. The first hour or so on The Great Ocean Road was scenic and definitely reminded me of California Highway 1. There are many spots where you can stop, walk along the beach, and take photos. We were in a time crunch and only stopped at a couple of places for a few minutes each. Toward the middle of the day, it began to rain and we regretted not bringing an umbrella. We took a few more significant detours here - first at Kennett River to see the beautiful birds and wild koalas and then at Cape Otway to see the famous lighthouse. We were getting tired but powered through as the best was yet to come. In the late afternoon, we finally arrived at the limestone formations. The most famous and consequently most crowded one is the 12 Apostles. There were bus loads of loud tourists but even that did not deter from the stunning beauty. We stopped at several other less famous sites within a few minutes of the 12 Apostles including Loch Ard Gorge, Gibson Steps, The Arch, and London Bridge. Although the others were not as famous, they were nonetheless impressive and provided a much more peaceful setting to enjoy the natural wonders. After visiting London Bridge, we headed inland toward Colac to get back to Melbourne. Even the inland route was beautiful as we passed through lush pastures and grazing animals. Unfortunately, we got a speeding ticket about an hour out from Melbourne. It's hard enough driving on the left side of the road and we really have no concept of what 100 or 120 kph means when we're trained to think and feel in mph.

To paraphrase a famous idiom: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." Meaning: At some point in my life (2007), I traveled the world's most majestic, and scenic drives. Miles of wild coastline scenery took my breath away. And there are no words to adequately describe the picturesque view. Seriously! The road called Great Ocean Road. 151 miles of wild coastline scenery, with many twists and turns embracing the charm of the cliffs along the Southern coast. Exploring the intriguing road, where history and beauty meets. If you were lucky enough to be there, it'll be nearly impossible to miss The 12 Apostles. They are the famous and magnificent landmark of the road. i.e:Large limestone pillars formations. It's 12 Apostles and Five Yelps.

"Where should I go in Melbourne?" "Great Ocean Road!" "Is that like... a road?" "Yes, definitely check it out!" "But... isn't it like just a road?" "No, go check it out!" After a handful of fellow colleagues who were born in Victoria recommended GOR for fourteen hundred times, I was finally (half-)convinced that I might take a look at the Great Ocean Road. And even by then I wasn't too keen. Obviously I didn't look it up enough on the interweb. All I did was booking a night at YHA hostel at Apollo Bay. I woke up early and drank my coffee, drove pass Geelong, and my first stop was at Anglesea for one more coffee (Melbourne coffee rocks!). At Aireys Inlet there was a lighthouse with fantastic (well, up to the standard at this point) view around it. Drove pass Aireys Inlet there was a big Great Ocean Road gate/arch, which got me very excited. Mind you it wasn't easy to start the first part of the road, as it involved a lot of zig-zags. If you are from a country which drive on the left, it may not be intuitive. Luckily, there were a lot of stops in between so I could always stop, take a picture and let the guys behind me to go first. The view was amazing, but not (again, up to the standard at this point!) jawdroppingly amazing, but I couldn't help myself stopping at the side every 5 mins to take more pictures. After Princetown it was a pretty straight road. Remember I said I prepared next to nothing about Great Ocean Road? Rookie mistake. You can even laugh at me. But what I did was just picking random detours (the tourist spot road signs in brown). I was at Gibson Steps (walk all the way down the steps please) with an unique view from the bottom of the cliff. I was also at Loch Ard Gorge, there were a lot of different rock formations/erosions that gave you a good hour of woo'ing. At the very same stop you can also see the old Island Archway, which was collapsed in the middle in 2009 and now two separate islands (you can still find on Google Map the image of the pre-collapsed Archway). And my confession time: My only mistake in this trip was... skipping the detour to The 12 Apostles! Yes, you hear it right... I missed it. Just because I didn't feel like making the 3 minute detour. And god knows how many amazing pictures of The 12 Apostles were in the interweb, I never registered in my mind. Well, I guess you can learn from my mistake, and on the other hand I have an excuse to come back again! I stayed at Port Campbell for a late lunch and drove back to Apollo Bay to stay overnight, before I went back to Melbourne the next morning. All in all it's a once a lifetime 6-star road trip here. I didn't go in-land through the rest of the Great Ocean Road, so feel free to tell me what else I missed! tl;dr version: Go Great Ocean Road, you won't regret. Enjoy the ride slowly and stop at every possible tourist spots. DON'T flipping miss The 12 Apostles!

Sure, you drive this road to see a few well known apostles, but there's plenty of other serene views to see along the way.

The Twelve Apostles might now be eight or nine but it's still one of the most majestic sights you'll ever see and here it is just a relatively short drive from Melbourne. Standing on the viewing deck, wind blowing across your face, and on the day we visited rain, is a humbling moment where you realise it's all so much bigger than you or I. You can definitely drive and take-in the grandeur of this iconic Australian drive in one day but I personally would say, "Take three. Heck, take a week and stop at some of the beautiful townships along the way. Lorne, Torquay,Port Fairy or Wye River." Stop for fish and chips. Get a coffee from the New Wave kiosk in Torquay. And have a driving partner - the sights are distracting and it's safer driving!

It is only 30 minutes from Melbourne by car, with plenty of free parking available and the best part is... entry to this magnificent Werribee Park Gardens and Victoria State Rose Garden is FREE. We strolled through the park and absorbed the well laid out landscape of roses in many colours and took time in smelling their fragrances. Plenty of places where you could sit down on their sculpted seats or pick a spot on their luscious green lawn - the area is huge to walk around that enables you to find a suitable piece of lawn to rest upon, under a shade of tree or sunlight - your choice. I even saw a family kicking the ball - a family-friendly place to visit. Many photo opportunities and then there is "The Mansion". You cannot miss the mansion because it truly is a mansion, it was built during the 19th Century (Victorian era) with Italianate architecture style. They do run tours there where you have the opportunity to see inside the Mansion and the history that goes with it, but we chose not to do it, we were quite happy enjoying the free views of 'The Mansion'. There is also a café located near the mansion where you could buy something to eat, have a cuppa or an ice-cream or why not bring along a picnic basket instead? And yes... they do have toilet facilities there as well. If you had a stressful day, smell the rose that would surely make you forget the past and an opportunity to recoup!
