Being as I am a total nerd and lover of comics, video games, movies and music, I am always up for checking out shops that feature any or all of this type of merchandise. I was told by a friend of mine about Great Escape as a store in Louisville that I should certainly check out and well, after taking a trip recently, I absolutely agree. Great Escape is a store that might be a bit of a sensory overload for you if you're the kind of nerd like I am that also has a fine appreciation for vinyl as well as comics and even classic video games. Vintage shops are some of my favorite places to check out and Great Escape is now my go-to place for such items. Upon entering, you will immediately take a trip to wherever your nerdy imagination desires whether it be heading towards their insanely impressive collection of Star Wars toys or the amazing display of vintage vinyl records and music on a variety of other platforms. Great Escape also has a great selection of video games from just about any era of gaming from Atari all the way to the current generation of gaming which as a video game collector certainly was pleasing. The assortment of comics will keep you here flipping through them for hours as Great Escape has a number of classic stories that should please any comic book fan and what's even more impressive is the prices are extremely reasonable from discounts on graphic novels to a $.99 section of comics which provides a wide assortment that any fan, young or old, can appreciate. Great Escape is a really cool shop on Bardstown Rd. for all of your geeky needs. Video games, action figures, vinyl, movies...but it was clear to me that this place is like comic book heaven. Although I don't read comic books myself, I'm sure that anyone who reads them would be ecstatic to go through their collection. I really liked getting to go through their movies. Most of them are marked down really cheap - about $3 or 4$ - and had all kinds of popular films. They also had some cool vintage items, like Beatles trading cards and other random stuff. This place is really worth checking out! You can sell things in here as well. read more

The Great Escape has been around for a long time. While I can't speak to the prices being fair for the items they carry, I can say I don't know of another place quite like it. If you are a comic book fan, this is where you come for new and older versions. The store is also packed with movies, used toys and games, t shirts and other random accessories. Some items are new, some are used / consigned. I thought it was cool to see a Barbie book that was originally $.29 being sold in the store - and if you're into it, buying it for $4.99 isn't terrible. Bring the kids, or shop alone, but carve out time to slowly browse through The Great Escape or else you'll miss a hidden gem. read more

First of all, parking is only street unless you can get a spot across at the Kroger. Inside the store they have a mix of video games and comics on one side and movies and CDs on the other. Honestly, I didn't find anything I was interested in. Prices seemed fair, but I think this is more of a comic book store with a side of entertainment. Great for fans of comics but I think Half Price Books had a wider variety of things I was personally interested in. read more

My first time visiting Great Escape recently due to a recent purchase of a record player! We have visited several stores that sell records but WOW this has by far been the best! Soooo many options and the people that work there are extremely helpful and nice! Also, they are constantly adding to their collection, so if there is something you are looking for but can't find - odds are they will have it come through eventually! I've been coming here for my comics and collectibles since I was a kid and I have never felt more accepted in a shop like this!

Wasn't impressed by this place. It was chaotic, and crowded. They had some good finds, especially in their records, and seemed fairly priced. We didn't spend a whole lot of time there, just long enough to look around and sell my boyfriend Pokemon card collection. The reason for the 2 stars was the customer service. The guy (one of the guys?) who was working the day we went in didn't seem happy to be there, which I get, but there just wasn't any enthusiasm. We tried striking up conversation with the worker since it wasn't that busy but he wasn't engaging.My boyfriend handed the guy his box of cards and the guy didn't really even look through the cards individually. He just looked at the box and said "Ill give you $115." Which may seem like a good chunk, but luckily my boyfriend, being the nerd that he is, knew his cards were worth more. We ended up taking the same cards to a different place and they offered $500! The BF was so irritated by the overall customer service and low ball that he has sworn off this place. Parking can be challenging most of the time. It is street only. I have seen other people say you can park at Kroger (which is technically true) but its at your own risk. They have signs saying for Kroger customers only and that they will tow, etc. read more

The prices are very competitive. You may not always find what you want, but chances are you will find something you didn't know you needed til you seen it. I am not a comic or record collector, but I stopped by to buy gift certificates for a couple of young teen-age boys. Sonya, the manager, was helpful and really seems to know her stuff. She apologized for the store being messy as it was a couple of days after Comic Book Day and the Derby which apparently resulted in a big crowd there. Anyway, the place looked great and had lots of eye appeal. If you like comics and toys you need to take a look. I didn't realize they had a parking lot in the back so I parked on the street. It was a weekday afternoon and parking was easy. By the way, the boys were happy to get a gift certificate from The Great Escape! read more

A mainstay of the Highlands.They have everything you could want in a comic book store. A wide selection of back issues, variant covers, well stocked new releases, trade paperbacks, posters, and other collectibles. The staff is extremely knowledgeable. The only complaint I could ever give this place is standing butt-to-butt with strangers on a busy day. There isn't a ton of room to move around, so as long as you're respectful of others, you'll be in great shape. read more

The Great Escape in Nashville TN is a record store that carries comics. Alas, the Louisville version is the opposite. In fact, it might even be a stretch to say they carry records at all, since 90% of the dirty records here are scratched so badly the only bin they belong in is the Trash Bin. That said, in recent weeks these guys cleaned up their act somewhat by moving the CDs out of the center of the music room, hauling off the lousy $1 bins, and reorganizing their holdings (most of which is still beyond repair and as such worthless). The 1 positive is that the New Arrivals bin of around 150-200 LPs is now at least serviceable. On the occasion of my Memorial Day weekend 2015 visit they had just received a few boxes of real LPs from Nashville. I was able to buy some more run-of-the-mill 80s stuff missing from my collection including nearly every Devo and XTC LP I was previously missing out on. When I asked the desk clerk about it he said it wouldn't be a regular thing getting LPs from Nashville. The attitude of this place towards vinyl is far more low-key than I prefer, but I still occasionally drop by in the hope that Nashville has shipped another box. read more

Some of the reviews here have docked stars because no one asked the reviewer if he or she needed help. I understand this -- but when I walk into a comic book shop, or any place where browsing is standard, I absolutely want to be left alone. Which means I like that I can spend thirty minutes looking around without anyone bothering me. That said, if I do need help, all I generally have to do is make eye contact, and someone will ask if I need anything. Personally, I like that. People are ready to help if you indicate you might need help, but leave you alone otherwise. It's the perfect degree of helpfulness for me. The selection is excellent. I've found some relatively obscure new releases here, and several omnibuses I wouldn't expect to find in a shop this size. It's my go-to comic shop, in part because it's very close; but even if it were farther, I'd make the jaunt. I've yet to have a bad experience here. read more

They have sales often and always have discounts on used and traded books. Their indoor garage/yard sales are not to be missed! Also, off street parking in the back. And not crammed parking either, an actual parking lot! I always find a few books and knick-knacks to buy and I ALWAYS find new stuff to put on my wishlist. The staff is friendly and lets you explore without following you around. I appreciate that because I don't always come in looking for a specific thing. Just something to read in my downtime. They have a parking area behind the shop which is fantastic because parking in that area is such a pain. The employees are pretty cool and they offer a ton of different comics, movies, toys, and random little collector items. I pop in from time to time to see what's new. It can get a little crowded, but if you show up during the week, it's usually not too bad. Also they do not have a bathroom. If you are looking to sell your old Pokemon cards, skip this place. I waited an hour for them to go through my binder, and they offered me less than $10 for the whole book. I went to "Through the Decades" and they bought a handful of my cards for $120. read more

I have been going to the Great Escape since I was a child. There are threemain aspects that I enjoy about this business. The products they offer will grab any collectors attention. The staff is helpful and professional! There location is also a plus. Parking is easy to find without having to worry about paying the street meter. They offer comic books, cards, DVD, VHS, Blu-ray, retro games/consoles, and collectable toys! They have all sorts of comics. They have collectable comics from the 60s. They have the rare expensive comics behind the counter. They have thousands of comics up front. They have every comic book series. They have a wide range of cards. They have Yu-Gi-OH, Pokemon, Magic, and many others. When I was a kid I would go there once a week to purchase new Yu-Gi-Oh cards! They have a good amount of videos. They have retro games and consoles in the back. They have NES, SNES, N64, and many other games. They carry collectable toys such as models or action figures that no longer in production. The prices are reasonable. The common comics, videos, games, and cards are priced relatively low. The collectables are a little more expensive but that is because they are rare and hard to find. They are priced at the collectors market value. The staff is always kind even while dealing with difficult customers. The staff offers customers a fair value when they purchase old games and comics from people. The staff is also very friendly and inviting! I stop here every time I pass through Kentucky. I'm a huge fan of the Nashville stores, and this location is a must-stop on every trip for me. It's always a treasure hunt, but they carry a ton of comics, action figures, video games, and CCGs. They may have nothing for you on one stop, but the next you'll want to buy the entire store. I love this little comic book shop although it can be a little cramped at times. The people here are really nice and helpful. I went in here a couple of days ago to purchase Transformers: Dawn of The Autobots issue #28 so that I could see what all the rage had been about it. Sadly, they did not have it but the fact that the guy went through so much trouble to see if they had it was enough to make me one satisfied customer. 1st off, the area the store is in is very cool. Very busy with a lot of independent businesses along about 3 miles of this road. They have a large parking lot in back, parking is no issue. I saw complaints about their prices. I thought they were good. I was only interested in the action figures but I found the prices were where they needed to be. I have been to some comic book store that the prices were so high, they could close shop for the rest of the day if they made one sale. I looked around at other items and saw nothing outrageous. Nice sized store, friendly staff. They don't attack you when you walk in and make you feel like you NEED to buy something. I wish I had this store in Central Ohio! read more

They have CDs, vinyl records, DVDs, BluRay, comic books, trading cards and plenty of interesting trinkets for the kids or adults alike. While you may not expect it, they do pay cash or offer a higher store credit if you're looking to offload some of your items. It's a pretty easy process, just go to the counter and they'll walk you through the process. Someone posted that parking is bad; clearly they don't know that there is a small lot in the back of the store, I have never seen it full!

I called today and was put on hold for 11 minutes with no one ever picking up the phone to apologize for the hold time, no offer to take a message and no one asked if I would like to continue holding. They just left me on hold for 11 minutes straight. Very poor customer service. read more
