I have never been one to complain much. This is my first time writing a review as such. I had not received a haircut in 5 months due to being out of state and not being able to find the time with work, school, ect. I go to school in St. Charles, MO and was hesitant to go get my hair cut at Great Clips because I had heard bad reviews from friends and their experience there.
I decided to go to a different Great Clips that my boyfriend had recommended instead.
I walked in and a girl - I think her name was Angie - checked me in and began cutting my hair. I was first confused when she didn't wash my hair before she started cutting it. Heck, she didn't even get it wet. I later realized I was confused (after not getting a haircut in so long), and was thinking of LookAfter, who provides a complimentary wash with every haircut.
I told Angie I wanted a trim of whatever needed to be trimmed (dead ends, damage hair) and some bangs to frame my face. As Angie was cutting my hair (that I had straightened that day and had not washed for a couple days) I was slowly realizing that she was not very experienced, because she had to ask other employees on how to cut my hair or what to do. My hair is very thick and semi-wavy and it's difficult to add layers apparently, without making it look too heavy. Eventually Angie asked the store manager (whose name escapes me) for help and she began cutting my hair. They showed me what it looked like in the back and I saw uneven, choppy layers that go straight across the bottom of my hair. I asked if they could blend it better and make it look less choppy. They were both confused as to what I meant... I told them I wanted the layers to look less obvious and not a distinct layer by layer. They tried to tell me it looked like that because I had pink coloring underneath my hair. Now I don't have a degree in cosmetology, but I do know when my hair looks like it got cut by a 2-year-old.
I then asked if they always cut the hair without washing it first - they explained to me that the hair wash is always a la carte for $5, and that's when I realized I was confused in thinking Great Clips always washes your hair for you. They offered to wash my hair for me, even when I told them I didn't want to pay for it (I'm a college student with student loans), they washed it for free which was nice. All the meanwhile, another employee who didn't bother to interfere with my case kept giving the back of my head nasty looks - I don't know if it's because she thought Angie didn't know what she was doing and my hair looked bad or if it was directed toward me. It still made me nervous and upset.
What annoyed me the most, however, is how they both kept telling me how dry and dirty my hair was - I must admit I hadn't washed my hair in 2 days and I'm not always the best as rinsing everything out - but that's why I was going to get a haircut, so they could fix it for me. They acted like I didn't know what I wanted or how to take care of my hair - which may be true, but the manner in which they tried to "help" me was rude and condescending. They gave me a free wash and free samples to try to cover up the fact that they were unkindly being passive aggressive.
They also kept telling me to get a clarifying shampoo that could get the pink out of my hair, when I hadn't even said I wanted to get rid of the pink color. I understand that they were trying to be helpful, but that's not what I wanted. I just wanted them to wash and cut my hair, and unfortunately they didn't do so great at the cutting part. The bangs that framed my face look fine, although I wanted her to cut more and I still had choppy uneven layers in the back, by the end I just wanted to leave that place. I also still have a lot of hair that was damaged at the ends and desperately needed to be cut, but was completely missed. I should have voiced that I was unsatisfied, but I didn't want to deal with these women any longer. So instead, I just said I liked it, payed and thanked them, and left.
In the end it's just hair, it'll grow back and I will have to get it cut again. The way my looks is not the end of the world. I am just disappointed and frustrated with the service I received at Great Clips Mark Twain Village in St. Charles, MO this afternoon after paying $15. I wish I could try to give Great Clips a second chance, but after hearing about so many bad haircuts and now my own bad experience, I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more
