I wish I could say something nice about insurance companies but Great American is the worst of them all. They lack communication skills, no response from any of them. Currently dealing with them in July 2025 but they don't seem to return any of my calls or emails. Joseph Mueller And Karlie Griffith should learn to treat customer better or at least communicate what's going on. Great American refused to honor a mortality claim for an insured horse that became deathly ill. He had been misdiagnosed by a veterinarian after months of treatment and was actively starving to death when I had him euthanized. The necropsy showed that he had a condition in his stomach that was killing him. Great American wanted him to actually starve to death. This insurance company is evil. read more

They don't value their customers and try to scam them. I was a customer for over 10 years and canceled my insurance with plenty of notice. I was told as long as I cancel before the quarter I would have no further payments. Of course, they randomly changed their mind and tried to bill me for another 50 with no reason. I lived in a condo in Texas that was covered by Great American during the freeze in Feb of 21. I had quite a bit of damage and great American covered less that half of what it cost to repair. They wouldn't talk to any resident directly and when they sent adjusters out the were very rude and defensive when the came into my condo. They refused to look at some damage I had upstairs and told me that they weren't covering that. My private insurance said that they would cover it if they got a denial letter from Great American. For some reason they refused to give them a denial letter without any explanation. Not only did I get no reimbursement for that repair, it took over a year and a half to get reimbursement for the broken pipe that they did cover. Worst insurance company in America. My mother passed away in December of 2021 and it is now April 2022 and we are still awaiting payout of her annuity with Great American. They have sent things back multiple times for yet another correction or form that they need to have completed and every time it takes 10 days for them to "process". I called yesterday because it had been 10 days and I haven't heard anything and they were going to send an "urgent" message to the processor but that can take up to 2 business days!! Don't invest or buy insurance from this bunch!!! My parents bought insurance from them in the 1960's and after they had been dead over 5 years was contacted that they had a claim to pay the estate. After jumping through many hoops and spending countless hours on the phone and faxing them, they still have not paid. This has been going on for well over a year now, closer to two years. It is always some excuse such as the Letters Testamentary not having been certified in 90 days. Hell, they have been dead for years and once the Letters are certified by the court, that's the end of it as the estate(s) are settled. Other annuity/insurance companies paid easily years ago with the paperwork that the court issued when the estate was settled. These people are rotten to the core so spend your money more wisely with a real insurance company. Your heirs will be sorry and broke because they will never ever get the money!!!!! Beware truck drivers and consumers that use CARGO INSURANCE! Great American Insurance Group is the worst commercial insurance your money can buy. Take your business and hard worked money somewhere else. My truck was damaged during transport and I filed a cargo claim with them almost 2 month ago. Untill this day they are doing investigation and wining about paperwork when I already provided a copy of the title for the truck in my name. They asked for a mountain of documents, but failed to present a plan to either repair or replace my truck. It's been 2 very long and frustrating month that my 2017 F250 was damaged. I call and email the people working on this claim (and their supervisors) every day. They don't pickup the phone and don't call back. Sometimes I get an email from them but all they say is that they are still investigating. I have no clue what's going on. Terrible handling of claims and customer service. read more

I have a retirement annuity account with Great American Insurance Group set up through my employer several years ago. GAIG has recently downgraded the quality and ease of their customer service. GAIG seems to have gone back to 20th century technology and service. It used to be possible to see daily account values, values of individual investment products, etc. online. It was also possible to change account allocations, purchase allocations, etc. online. That has recently changed. Now when I try to access account details I am given this message "For more details such as account value, transaction history, subaccount allocations, and subaccount performance data please refer to your quarterly account statement. For the most up-to-date values or to request allocation changes, you may call us at 1-800-789-6771. You may also download, complete, and return an Allocation Change Form. Refer to the Servicing Forms menu." Apparently GAIG concluded the internet was just a passing fad and its customers should go back to using tried and true methods like making a phone call or mailing forms to them through the USPS. I understand why my employer is no longer using GAIG as a vendor for retirement accounts. read more

They told me that in order to roll my retirement account to an IRA that I would have to send my SS card to their office because they all of a sudden don't have agents in Texas anymore. WTF? Who in their right mind sends their SS card through the mail? Have they ever heard of identity theft? From reading the other reviews it is obvious that they are going to make it as hard as possible to roll my account over. I have withdrawn funds from my account in the past when I needed emergency medical care and had no other way to pay for it. Of course I paid a penalty for it which is a profit for them. At that point in time they did NOT need to see a physical copy of my SS card. It was easy enough to withdraw some cash. All of a sudden they have to have my card. I am at the point in my life where I feel just having this measly annuity is NOT enough and I need to up the ante and roll over my account into something that is going to have bigger returns. I do not even have Great American Insurance Group and if I could rate them lower than this I would. My vehicle was slightly damaged by the opposing party who had Great American Insurance. Mind you, the incident occurred in late January. After multiple phone calls with the party, and numerous phone calls with my own insurance I was finally contacted shortly in late May. Yes, May. The insurance said they would cover the costs to fix my vehicle and I was just relieved that I wouldn't have to wait another 4 months to be contacted. However, they never mentioned about covering for a rental. Here's where I messed up, I didn't inquire about a rental because I was naive and thought that since they didn't mention it it wouldn't be covered (I'm an idiot). I drop my vehicle off at the auto shop and the owner of the auto shop tells me I should be covered for a rental since the damage was not my fault. Give a call to Great American Insurance company, explain the situation and BOOM got a rental under my name. And at this point I'm happy, yeah it took 4 months to be resolved but hey, it's resolved! All I can ask for, plus I got a rental under my name that I wasn't expecting. Except it wasn't under my name, when I called Enterprise it was under the name of a Hispanic lady who hasn't been involved in an accident for multiple years whose name I will not disclose for privacy issues. I'll do that because they mail me invoices a day or two before they're due, then a few days later I get cancellation notices for failure to pay. Just like so many others on this page, I CANNOT recommend this company in any way. Our father died in May 2018. It is now February 2019 and we cannot get his money. They told us they will send the same letter stating why they are not sending us OUR money every month for a year and then OUR money will be sent to Unclaimed Funds. We closed out our father's estate with several other insurance agencies and sold his house with the paperwork we have sent to this company. They insist we must probate the will which would cost nearly $3000 for a $1000 claim. We are NOT going to do that for the last place we are dealing with. My opinion: This company should be avoided at all costs. As most of the other Reviews consistently note, this company is the ultimate Roach Hotel- You can check in....but you can't check out. Trying to withdraw an account will be your worst nightmare. You may at first believe Great American service is the ultimate in incompetence, but you are wrong. No one can be this incompetent. My correspondence with Great American demonstrates a pattern of apologies, excuses and acknowledged mistakes on their part. All of the mistakes, etc. have the same intended effect- to frustrate,delay or prevent the removal of your funds. I've initiated a complaint with my State's Insurance Department and intend to bring a lawsuit against them under my state's Consumer Protection Law. Others should consider doing the same. I had an accident and they towed my truck to truck shop , they didn't ask me where I want to fix my truck . By law they have to ask me where I wanna fix it . Don't use this company for rental storage insurance. The most common type of damage in storage units is the result of rodent (mice, chipmunk, etc.) or some kind of insect infestation. Their insurance policy doesn't cover any of these. CubeSmart Storage requires insurance coverage in order to rent a storage unit from them, and they only offer this insurance policy. Big rip-off! I rented from them in East Windsor, CT and lost a valuable Persian rug because a mouse set up house inside my rolled rug inside of my storage unit. read more

We are a specialty construction company and all of our tools are very expensive. One of my trucks had $12,000 worth of tools stolen from the locked, permanently mounted tool boxes. Great American denied the claim because the truck was not in a locked, gated lot with a full time security guard. Well, what good is that insurance? Great American Insurance Group has given me a run around for the past 4 years , yes 4 years! to close my annuity and transfer my funds to Vanguard IRA. Spent countless hours on the phone with their agents and written them many times . All on deaf years and a simple process to even get my money back has been harrowing. Every time the process gets reset over some technicality . Even the agents at Vanguard trying to help me have not been able to navigate this maze. Background: I worked for the School district and at some point a "friendly" advisor sold me a variable annuity from Great American Insurance Group. For the next 4 years I paid into the policy never thinking how much return on the investment I was getting. When I quit my school position I wanted to take my money to Vanguard IRA. This was 4 years ago and till date my investments are stuck with Great American Insurance Group. The investment has had nearly zero returns because of the expensive fees. I still have the same amount it was 4 years ago and will be paying them 'surrender' fees if and when I can cash it and move the funds to Vanguard IRA.
