Gray's was dispatched by AAA to tow my vehicle. The polite young man who was driving the tow truck actually took the time to diagnose my problem which allowed me to divert the tow to a local repair shop rather than towing to the closest Toyota dealer which was an hour or so away. I'm shocked to see that I am the first to review this outstanding business. Gray's is a second generation business with a clientele that includes a transient customer base from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point as well as the area's long time residents. When I moved to the area in the 80's a friend recommended them as honest and proficient at what they do. I did business with them for over twenty years until I moved an hour and a half away. Even then I returned occasionally for jobs that I would only trust to them. I am familiar enough with auto mechanics that I have bought three similar damaged trucks and made one good truck out of them, so I think I know good auto repair work. In all the times Gray's worked on my vehicles I never had to return one for failed work. That includes everything from a 1960's tractor to a new, at that time, Scion xB and PT Cruiser. When I was away my wife was treated just as well. They are not the cheapest but the prices are fair and not much higher than the less reliable shops. If there is one negative it is that they are busy. They do pretty much all automotive repair except transmissions and engine rebuilds. To sum up their attitude of customer service, I'll close on this story. They knew that I had multiple vehicles. One of them was in the shop and was to be returned that afternoon. They told me that they had a customer who had one car which broke down before a trip that was planned for the next day. They asked me if I minded if they did her car first and that I could get mine the next morning. There's a reason they are so busy! read more

On Saturday, May 5th, Gray's Towing towed my sister's car from Hwy 55 Burgers in Havelock. As anyone could see there are NO publicly posted signs related to towing ANYWHERE on that property, and the law clearly states that there must be posted signs on a property where towing is practiced. The law also states, very clearly, that the Towing Company must be available for release of the vehicle. Unfortunately, both of these laws were ignored, and my sister's truck was held hostage by Gray's until Monday. Hwy 55 admitted their mistake and has made every attempt to rectify this situation. I can't say the same for Gray's Towing. The owner had the opportunity to do the right thing on Monday when my sister came to pick up her truck and attempted to show him the statute related to towing, and Mr. Gray was not interested. So BEWARE- these guys are apparently PREDATORY TOWERS and will continue until someone stops them. Here is the statute, FYI: 20-219.2. Removal of unauthorized vehicles from private lots. (a) It shall be unlawful for any person other than the owner or lessee of a privately owned or leased parking space to park a motor or other vehicle in such private parking space without the express permission of the owner or lessee of such space if the private parking lot is clearly designated as such by legible signs no smaller than 24 inches by 24 inches prominently displayed at all entrances thereto, displaying the current name and current phone number of the towing and storage company, and, if individually owned or leased, the parking lot or spaces within the lot are clearly marked by signs setting forth the name of each individual lessee or owner. A vehicle parked in a privately owned parking space in violation of this section may be removed from such space upon the written request of the parking space owner or lessee to a place of storage and the registered owner of such motor vehicle shall become liable for removal and storage charges. Any person who removes a vehicle pursuant to this section shall not be held liable for damages for the removal of the vehicle to the owner, lienholder or other person legally entitled to the possession of the vehicle removed; however, any person who intentionally or negligently damages a vehicle in the removal of such vehicle, or intentionally or negligently inflicts injury upon any person in the removal of such vehicle, may be held liable for damages. The provisions of this section shall not apply until 72 hours after the required signs are posted. (a1) If any vehicle is removed pursuant to this section and there is a place of storage within 15 miles, the vehicle shall not be transported for storage more than 15 miles from the place of removal. For all other vehicles, the vehicle shall not be transported for storage more than 25 miles from the place of removal. (a2) Any person who tows or stores a vehicle subject to this section shall inform the owner in writing at the time of retrieval of the vehicle that the owner has the right to pay the amount of the lien asserted, request immediate possession, and contest the lien for towing charges pursuant to the provisions of G.S. 44A-4. (a3) Any person who tows or stores a vehicle subject to this section shall not require any person retrieving a vehicle to sign any waiver of rights or other similar document as a condition of the release of the person's vehicle, other than a form acknowledging the release and receipt of the vehicle. (b) Any person violating any of the provisions of this section shall be guilty of an infraction and upon conviction shall be only penalized not less than one hundred fifty dollars ($150.00) in the discretion of the court. (c) This section shall apply only to the Counties of Craven, Cumberland, Dare, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford, Mecklenburg, New Hanover, Orange, Richmond, Robeson, Wake, Wilson and municipalities in those counties, and to the Cities of Durham, Jacksonville, Charlotte and Fayetteville. (d) The provisions of this section shall not be interpreted to preempt the authority of any county or municipality to enact ordinances regulating towing from private lots, as authorized by general law. The owner of this business is EXTREMELY rude. My car was towed due to an accident. While they towed my vehicle to a auto shop, the driver did not take my Emergency Brake off in my car, which caused flat spots on my rear tires. I had pictures that the receiving autoshop took of the car, I had proof they did not release the Emergency brake. I presented these pictures to the owner, he "informed" me that his business did not do this, even after I showed him pictures. He talked to me like I was an idiot and an animal. read more
