I was introduced to this place several years ago. I love going here and seeing the living history of the native peoples. Any vehicle can make the off road drive but it is a little bouncy. Bring extra water and be prepared to take lots of pictures. I suggest wearing good hiking shoes. If you hike up into the canyon there is a small spring and waterfall when it has been raining.

First time here it's just outside of Laughlin it's a dirtish road we were in a Honda clarity and made it just fine . Small parking area but it was empty. You'll start the hike with the sign about the petroglyphs and it's a short walk from there. Walk in the wash until you see the big mountains one on each side like a little slot. Some are pretty easy to hike up or climb but a lot are around ground level. Saw lizards and bees and butterfly's . We were told about a rattle snake up one of the hills to the right so we didn't go there. I recommend to see this because it was very cool to see and wonder what the symbols all ment. Bring water for sure and I would go early it was very hot around 9 am when we finished.

I visited Grapevine Canyon in November of 2005 and again this December (2019). The area is gotten to from SR 163 following signs to Christmas Tree Pass. It is recommended that you come in from SR 163 as the Christmas Tree Pass Road can be a bit difficult for all but high clearance vehicles. At 2 miles in Christmas Tree Pass, there is a left turn that is clearly marked to Grapevine Canyon. Following this dirt road for a couple of tenths of a mile, you come to the parking area. There are two pit toilets here. There is an interpretive marker to read at the trailhead. Part of the area is under restoration, so the trail goes down into the wash and then you walk west for two tenths of a mile to get to the petroglyph area at the mouth of Grapevine Canyon. Check both sides to see as many of the figures as you can. We don't know what many of them mean, but you can always tell animals when they've been drawn. If you're a hiker, there a 1.7 mile, round trip hike to a waterfall. I have read that the waterfall is either very weak or non-existent now. You will have to do some scrambling over granite boulders and formations. At times, the grapevines will almost trip you it's so dense depending on the time of the year. Whether you hike to the waterfall area or just explore, it's a magical place. Wonderfully eroded granite boulders, a small stream, and plenty of grapevines. In any case, getting to see this rock art on the desert varnish that were done perhaps 100s of years ago is worth the side trip to/from Laughlin.

Such an amazing collection of petroglyphs just a hop, skip and a jump off the highway just outside of Laughlin, NV. Who knew? Certainly not me until I went on a tour of sorts with a guy from my church. We drove the whole length of Christmas Tree Pass Road ending at the glyphs. Some good site seeing and some moderate off roading. The whole area is a beautiful somewhat hidden gem. The crowning jewel are the peteoglyphs, of course. And you can get right up next to them. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be respectful of them and leave them be. Don't be a jerk and ruin them for everybody else just to get your kicks. Just come in, take a short walk, and take some pictures. Then check out the pit toilets before you get back on the road. Not exactly a highlight of the journey but they seemed fairly clean and imminently useful. Especially if you came the long way on Christmas Tree Pass and tenderized your insides while bouncing around. Ok, you're all set.

Take a hike!! Jk, no but really.... Hike this trail. You WILL NOT regret it. The rocks, boulders, topography are insanely beautiful and I can't wait to go back and adventure further into the trail. We hiked this trail in January 2022, and the weather was perfect. Bundle up and cover your ears if you go in the winter, it's cold and windy.

    Cute lizard paid a visit.

Grapevine Canyon is a must place to visit. The petroglyph were amazing to see. Easy hike to see them. Views were absolutely beautiful. Definitely worth a visit.

Petroglyph sites are typically off the beaten path, but the Grapevine Canyon Petroglyph site is a relatively convenient stop near Laughlin, Nevada. Drive about five miles west of Laughlin on Highway 163 until you reach the Lake Mead Recreation Area. Be on the lookout for Christmas Tree Pass Road, then make a right. Drive about 2 miles on this very flat dirt road, then make a left toward the primitive parking lot. You'll soon see an opening to a rock canyon to the west and the simple hike to the petroglyphs there takes only about ten minutes. You'll be overly-rewarded for your simple efforts because these petroglyphs are some of the best in Nevada for both quantity and quality. Bring your camera because taking great photos is quite easy because the hundreds of images are so articulate and pronounced. Many appear as if they were etched only yesterday. Supposedly, these petroglyphs date from AD 1100-1900 and I can see why the area was popular with the Mohave people: the canyon is shady with grasses interspersed among the rocks. Water pools quenched the thirst of humans and animals. If you look carefully among some of the higher rocks in various sections of the canyon, you'll see elegant depictions of bighorn sheep. Put your deck of cards aside for awhile and venture out to one of the more fantastic petroglyph sites in the southwest.

A definite must visit if you are in the Laughlin area as it is a short 15-20mins drive from Casino Row off 163 @ mile marker 13 which takes you to a dirt road that is Christmas Tree Pass and a dusty 2mi farther down will bring you to the parking area at the trailhead to the petroglyphs and canyon. There are primitive restrooms at the parking area and a couple of trash receptacles, but other than that you are on your own in the desert wilderness, so make sure you plan accordingly and bring sunscreen and lots of water! The walk to the canyon entrance and the first petroglyph rocks is an easy 1/4mi one way. You can hike up to most of the petroglyphed rocks and get up close and personal, but just remember to be respectful and not touch or do anything to deface the sacred and protected archaeological relics. The 'glyphs are gorgeous and plentiful and you will be hard pressed to find a favorite! The hike deeper into the canyon is pretty strenuous as you will often have to make you own trail by walking over, up, and/or sliding down several rocks/boulders, but it is well worth the experience as the views from within the canyon and especially walking out of it facing the gorgeous red rock mountains are just breathtaking! I highly recommend exploring this amazing site, if for nothing more than the amazing petroglyphs alone! Just be sure to allow yourself enough time to drive in and out on the dirt road (you honestly will get a top speed of 15mph as the road was pretty rutted when I drove it today) and hike in and out of the canyon as the sun sets fast and you do not want to be stranded out there at night. I drove from the Aquarius and spent just over 3hrs total from the hotel and back with some pretty in depth hiking and picture pitstops. Also beware of snakes and other dangerous wildlife. I did spot a couple slithering away today when I was hiking up towards the shallow caves near the canyon entrance.

Our favorite hiking spot. Easy hike/climb, and it's a genuinely magical experience. Definitely visit this beautiful sight.

Great area! Easy hike to some of the rocks with pronounced petroglyphs, and further beyond is a medium rock scrambling experience. Further still (about a mile in) it gets to be a difficult scramble - I stopped just before it. Apparently over the difficult rocks the trail lays out again. Peaceful and scenic awesome glyphs brush and shrubbery.

On the way to Laughlan is the long dusty street of X-mas Tree Road. It's an easily travelled dirt road that any compact car can navigate. Just not on a rainy day. Going in about a mile or so is the parking for the Grapevine Canyon. Once you get here there is a restroom. The standard glorified stationary port o pot type national park hole in ground style pooper. The trailhead has a simple introduction to the petroglyphs that are to be seen on the canyon. The trail seemed to have been a bit washed out on a few sections during our trip this weekend. Still not that hard to follow. The hike is about a 1/2 mile easy trail round trip that leads to few rocky down hill trail grades. Once you get to the edge of the canyon there's a crazy amount of ancient Native tribal graffiti just emblazened all over the entrance rocks. What does it all mean? No one can tell really. It sure is really neat to be at a location where our human ancestors used to think was the bees knees. Once there, the exploring can be quite fun up boulders and down narrow paths. We came with the little ones and that was about as far as the tots could safely trek. Cant wait to check this place out next time without the boys so we could explore much farther in and see what all the hub bub was all about in this canyon.

    Candace R.

This place is amazing. It's wild to see a bunch of grapevines growing in the middle of the desert. There are so many petroglyphs in the canyon, just keep your eyes open and keep looking up and around to find so many different ones. One note. The path is choppy and sandy. If you have back, knee or leg issues, just take it slow to avoid injury.

Grapevine Canyon was a really cool stop

Hubby just bought a new 4WD car and wanted to go off roading, and the drive through Christmas Tree…read morePass came recommended as an easy one for beginners. I'd agree with that assessment. I would say anyone with a 4WD vehicle could easily handle the well-manicured dirt roads. The drive took us about 45 minutes with LOTS of stops to take photos, walk around, and enjoy the desert landscapes. It was very peaceful and quiet, and we only passed one other vehicle the entire time we were driving! It's free, clean, and fun, and you can't ask for more than that! The landscape is (obviously) dry desert, with pretty rocks and flora and fauna. We saw plenty of lizards, birds, chipmunk looking things, and a couple of snakes, so be alert and respect the wildlife! Don't pick anything and don't harrass anything. We drove in early July, when the temperatures were over 110. We brought plenty of water "just in case," and there are several areas where you can wander off on foot (but again, watch for snakes)! I was impressed with how clean it was along the Pass, I did not see one piece of trash anywhere! The roads are graded but the sand gets a bit deep in a few places, where we slid a little while driving. It was fun because the road is very wide with plenty of room. At one end of the Pass, there's an area with well preserved petroglyphs. It does require a bit of a hike which isn't that far distance-wise, but it's in deep sand that's difficult to walk through (especially when the temps are high). I made it maybe a third of the way and turned back. I'll try again in the fall or winter. There's a hole-in-the-ground toilet facility by the petroglyphs if you need it. I am not outdoorsy in the least, but I had a really fun time riding along on this drive. If you're traveling between Las Vegas and Laughlin, it's a fun little "cut through" to get through the desert. Highly recommended.

The staff is very friendly and informative, also very helpful!! My tent blew away during a little windy moment and they helped me bring it back while also providing tips to prevent it from happening again. In the past, we had to get there before the park opened to secure a spot and once capacity was met they didn't allow anyone to enter. This was tough since there were a couple times we didn't make it on time and had to go elsewhere. Now, things have changed, which is a lot more convenient. They're easy to drive, great on gas mileage, and the fuel cost has never been unreasonable. (I'd recommend skipping the prepaid fuel option--it usually works out cheaper that way.) Another perk is that dogs are allowed on the patio boats! Just note that medium and large dogs count toward the passenger total, so it's a good idea to double-check when making your reservation. Two things to keep in mind: (1) During the fall season, all boat rentals need to be returned by 3:00 PM. (2) It costs $25 to get into the park. If you're planning on coming 2 or more times within a year, I'd recommend getting the Park Pass for $45. Overall, Katherine's Landing is a reliable and fun spot for boat rentals, and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a great day out on the lake!

So in 2016 & 2018 we dropped off one of the cars at Rotary Park (end of the river float) so we didn't have to take the shuttle back. Previous years we stayed at the Trop. We waited 15 plus minutes just to get into the casino elevator to go down to ground floor. 2018 we stayed at Harrahs and at 8 am we had no problem getting down. Previous years you could leave your floats at Davis Camp and pick them up in the morning. I don't think they offered it this year in 2018. It was unorganized in previous years. I saw some floats get stolen from the storage area and then others that didn't have their name written on their float and matching id so they couldn't get their float. Anyways we started bringing our own battery operated air pump after our first year. So 2018 the price jumps to $70 per person to float. T-shirts are $15. We don't use their shuttles, nor air pumps, or eat their "free" hot dog. So we think we have worked out all the kinks from previous years experiences but you can't ever plan for a coast guard flying on a jet ski driving full speed towards me then at the last second turning feet away from my float all to splash me and my dry valuables. Water actually shot up my nose! My float has a center storage compartment. All our dry valuables were nice and dry in in plastic baggie. But baggies aren't water proof when covered with water. My bf's iPhone 8 Plus was water damaged thanks to the coast guard on the jet ski. He even turned back to laugh. I got a little satisfaction giving him the bird. There are several people that complain and blame the floaters for all the trash but if the coast guards on the jet skis weren't zooming by so fast and so close to our floats causing some floats to over turn and/or everything to wash out we wouldn't have so much trash. My trash and any others' trash that I could reach has always been disposed of properly. Parking is now $30 per car but you can't drive back thru at the end of your float to pick up ur parked car. They make you drop off one person that has to wait in the hot heat for 20 mins for a golf cart to give them a ride from the parking entrance to their parked car then drive out to the street and back around to the entrance to pick up the rest of our party.
