Ahh, the Grapes is your traditional village-esque pub. The clientele are true locals and although at first looked at us as though we were slightly lost, welcomed us in with open arms. (Well, she smiled when she poured my drink.)
It's busy and ringing with chatter, the races on in the background. There is a community vibe about the place. Everyone seems to know each other but are more than happy to involve you in their conversation. One guy told me that he scored a hat trick against Bill Shankly in his hay day and another bloke was telling the newest joke about Rooney and the shocking state of the England team which contained a swear word. He turned to me and apologised 'sorry, love! I used a naughty word', I half expected him to tip a top hat to me and send me back on my way to a place where there is only birdsong and laughter. What a thoughtful man, but it was a funny joke!
A proper place for a pint and a chat. read more
