Me and the boyf have been determined to buy all our fruit and veg from here because it's yummy and local and they're the only one I know of that accept Bristol pounds. We are starting to juice too and this would be costing a lot more if we were buying from a supermarket. There's something really satisfying and almost smug about buying really fresh, a little bit more grubby and wonky, and a whole lot more delicious produce from the greengrocers! They also do little extra treats like jam and chutney!

I'm on a mission at the moment to use supermarkets as little as possible. Spurned on by my love of…read moreThe Bristol Pound and supporting local, independent businesses - I've found my greengrocer, and I love it! Here you'll find wonky carrots, dirty potatoes and odd shaped oranges; just how the come out of the ground (or tree) and how they should be. Gardeners Patch sell pretty much any standard fruit and veg you would want. You wont find too much international out of the ordinary, but you will find inspiration if you're trying to think of a meal to cook. The staff are really nice and very helpful. I asked lots of potato related questions: best for mashing, roasting etc and they were happy to help. I've by a weeks worth (2 bigs bags) of fruit and veg for less than £10 each time I go. They accept Bristol Pounds and 'Text to Pay'

The Fruit and Veg Stall is situated next to Ice Master and Rainbow Bargain, a huge home and garden…read morestore, which occupies the former Methodist Church where Wellfield Road meets Albany Road in Roath. It doesn't have an official name, and there are no published contact details for the place either. But this is of little consequence, the business has occupied this spot on Wellfield Road for as long as anyone can remember, and has been patronised by the locals in their hoards, as the pictures I've supplied bares testimony to... Being a licensed concession allows it to trade without need for an address, and as long as it is not taken beyond the boundaries of the licence agreement, it can be put anywhere where the owners wish to site the mobile stall. But, come rain or shine, you will find it in the same place, selling very reasonably priced perishables that are always incredibly fresh. They occasionally carry organic items, but are reliant on what's available at the suppliers, so they tend to stock goods that are in season that carry an affordable price tag. Nevertheless, they always have a good variety of fruit and veg on offer, even if one or two items are not always consistently available.

I'd be dragged to my grampy's favourite seller, whom he knew personally and from whom I always got a free apple. My dad would cart me around car boot sales, talking to sellers about what they've got and what's just come in and what's in season. I was made to carry potato sacks from these places with my nan. The huge range of produce which was always fruit and never chocolate, and their weird, braying voices always made me hate them as a child. As an adult though, I find myself drawn to these kinds of stalls because I have since become healthy, as adults are meant to be, and my desire for chocolate has decreased. I spent a year living just across the road from this stall, and it never failed to satisfy. Like all fruit stalls, the range can vary depending on the season and what he's been able to get hold of, but the prices and the range are fantastic and you get a wonderful sense of achievement from shopping here that Tesco and Morrison's just don't give you.

They have a good selection of interesting cheeses. Even though it was empty on a weekday afternoon, the cheesemonger didn't seem particularly interested in helping us since we weren't buying a ton. I know it's annoying to let us sample and then cut a bunch of 100 g pieces, but we just didn't have anywhere to store the cheese on our trip. They also have lots of cheese tools and cheese related gifts, as well as their own crackers and lots of various spreads. It's a pretty cute and complete shop.

Paxton and Whitfield was always a London institution. And I love old traditional shops, especially businesses as old as this one. So, I went into this shop hopeful I could find a special treat for a picnic. It was lovely, a really special experience. The young man in the shop was really helpful and knowledgeable and friendly and not in the least bit snooty. There were lots of beautiful artisan cheeses from all over, including some special local cheeses. Suffice it to say that I tasted some beautiful cheeses in there and took some lovely stuff home with me. I can only recommend that you do the same. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
