*Avoid this business* I'm saying this to help you avoid the issues, stress and poor workmanship done on our counters. Issues include: messing up the counters during cutting three times and telling us to pick a new countertop or get a refund. Poor install job. Poor cutout for the sink install. Dust and material left at the job site. Very poor caulking job. One big issue I had was the backsplash. At first we said we wanted one but changed our minds and told them. We even emailed them and told them we didn't want one. When they measured for the countertops, they told me the contractor said we wanted the backsplash. NOT true at all! The contractor is my brother and he said the only thing he said to them was "hi". Seems as if they are trying to sell you more but do less work. Fingers are crossed nothing happens to the counters, because I would hate to deal with Granite Works again. read more

Customer service and communication is a major, major problem at this business. The workers are combative. If you go here you are taking a risk. I had read the negative reviews about these very issues and now I wish we had not entered into business with this company. Calls are not returned even though there are pressing deadlines, workers are rude and one even hung up on us--twice. Angel has a short temper and becomes visibly agitated and annoyed when you ask questions. His body movements are actually frightening and aggressive. He pressured us into making decisions we were not ready to make and then when we changed our mind the next day he threatened to return our $1300 deposit and make us go elsewhere. My husband had to talk him down like a counselor, assuring him we could work out the plan and be professional in dealing with each other and to take a deep breath. But this encounter just convinced us that we really cannot trust him to do the work--angry worker = angry product. So, we called later to ask about HIS request to refund us the deposit. And then he hung up on us. So we called back and he said that the contract says we have to pay 25% of our deposit to cancel. When we offered $150 he retaliated by only refunding us 50% of our deposit for a "restocking fee." We then contacted the BBB and our family lawyer. There were, of course, other issues along the way and I should have seen this as an indication of deeper problems. When we came in to chart out the cut on our slab we chose, they had the wrong one displayed but strongly insisted that it was the one we chose. Luckily we took a picture and were able to show them which slab we actually had chose. Joe, who measured our counter, was fabulous and let us even call him at home with questions. But unfortunately, even the women at the front desk who must be connected somehow to Angel (sister?), became short with us; she had told us to contact her on a Saturday--which we did--but she didn't tell us about their shorter hours so we when we showed up they were closed. When I told her we did try to contact her on Saturday she snapped back about how no we didn't because the answering machine dated my call on a Sunday. When I could finally explain that we came down on Saturday and they were closed she had no response. This also wasn't the first time she was rude. It's hard not to imagine what happens behind the scenes--it seems like she takes Angel's side and when he is angry, she is rude. In short, we took Angel up on his offer and got out. And I am so happy we did. Despite Granite Works being cheap, we actually saved money by going to West Michigan Granite in Grand Rapids (HIGHLY recommended) who not only supplied us with a beautiful countertop, but who were also beyond, beyond, beyond courteous and professional. I will never support a business ever again after their employees act even the bit unprofessionally. There are other businesses in the area with workers who are professional and will actually treat you the way a customer should be treated. read more

The issues escalated when we were working with Angel. We came to review the slab we had picked out and to finalize the design. Other employees said we could have our counter as one piece but on this trip we were told they would have to put in a seam cut from different parts. I was confused and asked questions to clarify what the issues with the size were and what it means to cut from different parts. Through our conversation Angel started to show signs or irritation and acted agitated--talking quickly, raising his voice, bouncing on his toes and shifting his weight aggressively. The receptionist tried to explain an issue and he hostilely snapped at her. While still in the heightened, frustrated state they urged us into adding a four inch back splash. Ultimately, this decision we felt bullied into: we were unable to take our time, consider carefully our options, and consult professionally with the workers who would be cutting our granite and who would enter our home to install it. My wife after the encounter said that she felt unsafe in that moment and would feel unsafe with that person in our home. That night when we realized we did not want a four inch back splash we called the store and left a message. Afraid those who cut the slab would be in early and would not be in charge of checking messages, we also called the person who measured our kitchen on the phone he uses for work. He answered, was extremely welcoming and made sure our slab would not be cut. The next morning I got an angry call from Angel who said he would prefer not to work with us (also articulating other angrily worded issues) and he stated he would give us our deposit back. I talked him down and we conversed in a more business like way and made plans to move forward with the project. Later that day my wife expressed to me concerns over working with a violent person and bringing him into our home. We would not be able to negotiate with Angel through the troubleshooting process in regard to cutting and installing our countertops. They created an aggressive and potentially dangerous situation and were unfit on their end to complete the work. I called the store to see if we could work out special terms in the cancelling of the contract because Angel expressed his dissatisfaction with working with us. One issue he has, besides our layout questions from earlier, is that we had to measure our kitchen twice because a cabinet had to be adjusted. The measurements, with the technology they use, takes only a few minutes--it is done by machine, I think it involves lasers. After Angel hangs up on me when I try to discuss the terms for terminating the contract (or for potentially working with someone else) he sends a refund for half of our deposit. He cancelled the contract. At no point did I tell them I will be cancelling the contract or to send a refund. He kept a portion of the deposit as a restocking fee ($685) which is a charge not stipulated in the contract and that I was not notified of until the receipt came by email. read more

Buyer Beware. This company does not stand by their product. They were very sloppy with the installation. The area where the stove sits was too tight to get the stove back in. They Scratched my brand-new stove. There are pieces of the granite that look like they used a black marker to touch it up. They never return your phone call. When you stop by, they mislead you. I have divots in my granite, I spoke to the owner Angel directly, he said it was not our fault and that they would come and repair them. Later you find out that you have to pay $200.00 to have it fixed. They also do not keep records of what you purchased. In summary, the quality of the product is not good, and the customer service is horrible. You will definitely be disappointed. It is a very pricy Granite to be continuously disappointed. read more

My buying process was broken into 3 steps. First; my wife and I met with a rep at the warehouse and looked through all our options. 1st, the Good (would be 5 star): 1) Best large slab Granite selection and price in the Kalamazoo area by far. (as of last spring when we had ours installed) 2) Madchen was a real pleasure to work with, Thank you Madchen! 2nd, the Bad/Unacceptable (would be 1 star): I would never recommend Granite Works for final finish and prep of cut sections, installation, nor final clean-up. 1) Our granite was left installed dirty. 2) One section had one silver dollar size spot where it looked like they sat an orbital sander spinning on it with coarse grit. (see pics) 3) We ordered and received a Half Bullnose edging on all flat horizontal surface exposed edges. All finished edges were delivered and installed having a couple dozen nicks, chips and cracks. After I received significant resistance from the owner (Angel) - the original Installers returned to fill these to help prevent us from snagging our clothes on them if/when rubbing against the edges. 4) During the original installation, the Installers broke one of the back-splash sections (it was one section when I saw it in their truck), then tried to install it by piecing it together. The finished section had a large uneven 1/8" separation where they tried to glue it together - they left it that way for us to find/live with. 5) When their original installers were unable or unwilling (because of Angel's resistance) to repair all of the issues (including the horrible spot pictured below), Angel reluctantly sent out a free-lance Professional designer/installer/detailer who came in and finally fixed all of Granite Work's initial granite cutting, prep and installation screw-ups. I respectfully referred to this gentleman as a "Granite Whisperer" as he was that awesome. I thanked Angel for sending him as he totally saved the project for Granite Works (and for us/our new kitchen) as I would not have paid for the 2nd half until it was made right. 6) As a minor note; I requested that I wanted to keep the large granite section cut-outs for both the double sink and the stove-top inset and they agreed. I requested them at time of placing the order, reminded them before they cut the slab sections, reminded them before they delivered the cut slab sections, reminded them during installation, and even prior to the installers returning to try to fix some of the above issues. Each time they seemed to forget and leave the cut-outs back in the shop. After requesting for the 6th time, they delivered ONLY one of them, it was dropped off, left leaning against the side of my house leaving a mark on my siding AND it was busted in half!? I was home at the time of delivery, but they did a drop and run. The response I got from Angel was "Your cooktop cutout was THROWN in the garbage when the installers got back here, I guess you should of told them to leave the cutout there when they were installing it" (which of course - I did) You can decide if the Good outweighs the Bad for your home/project. In summary: I would recommend Granite Works for awesome Granite ONLY. I would highly recommend the "Granite Whisperer" for an entire project. I would never darken Granite Works doors again primarily because of their poor product prep/finish and poor Customer Service from Angel, the Owner. read more

Granite works installed by kitchen countertops less than three years ago. Due to their poor installation on their part my kitchen sick fell. They only placed 2 brackets underneath that had screws that were too small in the predrilled holes. I requested to possibly replace the sink to a granite sink instead of the stainless I have - figures it would be a great time to do that since my sink was down into my cabinetry. Angel the owner quoted me $1100 for the new sink! My whole kitchen counter purchase was double that. Price Gouging?!? Very unhappy with their service, very unhappy with their quality of work. Buyer BEWARE! I would give this business a negative rating if I could. First, I need to say I love my granite and want it to be right more than anything! BUT, customer service is the worst I've ever encountered! On Monday, 6/2/2014 our countertop was installed. The installers arrived at scheduled time - they were pleasant enough but I was disappointed by the mess they left, but I could deal with that. I signed off on their work, as they said it was just a verification that the work was complete. BIG MISTAKE - I didn't realize that I was expected to inspect their work. Later that night my husband and I realized one of the seams wasn't smooth (I could actually slide my fingernail into the seam about 1/8") and that the other seam was uneven. We have since found several chips that were not smoothed out in the finishing process. Called the very next day and left a message, no return phone call. Called the next day, again call not returned. My husband stopped in to GraniteWorks after work - and reluctantly Angel agreed to come out on the next Wednesday. No show, said the appointment was for the following Wednesday. Today is the following Wednesday, again no show. When I called to find out where they were Angel screamed and threatened me, and said he wouldn't come to our home with out payment in full - as we had disputed the credit card charge after the failure to return the calls and the first no show, plus after reading reviews here and on other sites....we said when the work was done correctly, we would gladly pay. Paid in full, made appointment for July 17 - see below!! I have never had a business act so unprofessionally, and if he would have returned phone calls and showed up when scheduled - he'd be payed in full, and I'd be writing much more favorable reviews of GraniteWorks! Had an appointment today (July 17 at 2:30) for Angel to come fix the countertop. Found out at 3:00 he was in Chicago, but Nick was on his way.....it's 6:30 (and 6 phone calls, he's coming) and still no show! The irony of all of this, when Nick finally showed - it was less than 30 minutes work. If Angel wouldn't have ignored phone calls and showed for the first appointment (which was only made when my husband showed up at the business) this could have all been avoided. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE EVER!!! I would give them a negative rating if I could. It must be the female owner/owner's wife that all reviewers on here keep referencing w/ whom I spoke. She was awful! My wife & I scheduled them to come out to cut the opening in our existing granite countertop in order to fit the new range we had ordered. They said it would be less than an hour job and would cost ~$200. We told them multiple times that we had to have the work done by a certain day, because that's the day our new range was being delivered/installed. They said they would have somebody out the same day as our range delivery to complete the work, as this was their earliest available date to do the work. They called us at 5:30PM the night before they were supposed to be there and said that the had to cancel our appointment and reschedule for the following week. My wife didn't get the phone message until the next morning, the day they were supposed to be there/the day our new range was to be delivered. I called and asked why the had cancelled on us and the lady, who claimed to be the owner said, "Well, I can't give out personal details of my employees, but the person who was supposed to do the work had a family medical emergency, so we had to cancel and reschedule on everyone who had jobs scheduled for today and tomorrow until he gets back to work on Friday." I asked if they only had one person who was able to cut granite countertops, and she said, "No, we have several people who can do it." I asked why she couldn't send somebody else, she had no answer for my question, not even that everyone else was already busy with other jobs, just silence/dead air on the phone. I then said that I was very upset and she said, "Well, I'm sorry that I didn't know that one of my employees was going to be donating a kidney last night." I asked, "He's donated a kidney last night, but he's going to be back at work in 2 days?" Again, just silence/dead air on the phone. You could tell by what she said/how she said it that she was simply lying. I understand that emergencies happen, but this was not an emergency...they screwed up w/ their scheduling and rather than simply owning up to it, she decided to try to concoct some huge lie about it. I thought that my cabinet was crooked, it was a long time before I actually measured the counter top and discovered that it was cut crooked from Granite Works. I hate having my kitchen torn up so I accepted how the counter over hung the cabinet at a different depth on one side. After all, this was just a cosmetic flaw that most people would never notice, I still had a very nice looking solid counter top or so I thought. Recently, a crack started to develop by the sink and has grown. I got in contact with the owner of Granite Works "Angel" who assured me that there was nothing wrong with my counter top and this was just a natural fissure that had always been there. --He was able to tell me all of this without even viewing my counter top! I had to threaten him with legal action just to have him come out and look at the counter top. He spent all of two minutes in the kitchen and again claimed that it was a "fissure" which had been there all along (without us noticing apparently). If you take a moment to look up the definition of "fissure" you will discover that it is a crack! He left the house after making his declaration and my wife was unable to show him where his company had miscut the stone. I received email from him again "assuring" me that my counter if fine and that if the fissure was a crack it would be white.... We gave Angel and Granite Works the opportunity to demonstrate their customer service skills and resolving the crack in our counter top. Unfortunately, Angel was unwilling to listen to our concerns. We will not be force to pursue legal action. read more

I purchased Black Pearl granite countertops for our U-shaped kitchen in late June (2- long, L shaped cuts). Three other granite suppliers in town carried this product, so I had many choices in suppliers. I was told at all of the suppliers that there would be one seam in each countertop. I was overjoyed that Granite Works cut them in two L-shaped pieces, with NO seams. The sink cut-out was done before delivery, and specific to the sink we picked out. The installers trimmed the ends that butted up against the stove, on-site, for a more snug fit. They also put in and additional hole by the sink for a built in soap dispenser on site. Our order was installed, as agreed upon, 3 weeks after the purchase. Everyone showed up as scheduled to measure and install. I am VERY happy with the end results. Everyone we came in contact with at Granite Works was top notch. To be honest, I was a little put off by some of the more negative reviews. After talking to some of the sales people, and discussing what we needed to do on our end to insure a good installation, we felt confident in ignoring many of the more negative reviews. I am so glad I we did. Not only did I get the best price in town, I have really great looking countertops! read more

Canceled my project. Between sales rep (very nice) and boss, price went from $3k to $3500. Prices are marked on slab. I chose a $50/sf slab and was told "over 40sf we include sink and the cutout. That's $500 normally." I had 60 sf so it should be $3k. When I questioned the price, boss (presumably) referred me to a print ad of a special: 40sf for $2200 including sink and cutout." Additionally, I picked slab and was waiting for computer image of how it would look installed. Not only did it take 3 weeks to get that,, the slab I picked (and she drew out layout on) was gone. Considering I left a $1k deposit, doesn't make sense. Gave them a shot in lieu of the other reviews. Oh well. I will say getting deposit refunded was absolutely no problem. I first went to Southwest Michigan Granite & Quartz. I saw something I liked there and decided I was not going to shop around. BIG mistake (read my review about them). I went to a few other places, River Stone and Central tile and then Granite Works. Can I just say you must go to granite works. They have everything. Margie is the best. She can design anything and it will look like a million bucks. I get compliments every time I host a get together and tell everyone to go to granite works. I could not be more happy and plan to come back for my basement bar, master bath and laundry room if my hubby lets me. From start to finish the exceeded my expectations! read more

Pay the extra money and get a top notch company to install your granite. This company works pretty much exclusively on price point, and their workmanship and customer service shows it. I purchased three slabs of granite for my large kitchen. The scheduling for the initial installation went smoothly, but that's about it as far as an endorsement goes. The installation crew did not use drop clothes to protect my floor. Apparently, you have to request that if you don't want scratches. They also put two dings in my stainless steel refrigerator, then would not take responsibility for them because I had no "proof" that the dings were not there before the granite installation, which they were most definitely NOT. Two of the three slabs of granite were acceptable, and the third had machine-made scratches all over it. They were very obvious. They also cut the cooktop opening to the wrong size, which I only learned after the electrician was already at my home to do the installation. It took several phone calls and emails to get the owner to come out and inspect the problems. The first appointment he made to do so, he didn't show up, and I waited at home all day for nothing. No apology either. Then it took two additional weeks before he could make time to come out and look at the job. Meanwhile my kitchen was not very usable, and he said he could not have someone come out to address the problems for another two and a half weeks. In the meantime, and I had no usable stove, and most of the contents of my cabinets was in my living room. I found the owner to be incredibly rude. He actually remarked, "you must have too much time on your hands", implying that because I didn't want a scratched up defective piece of granite, I was being too picky. Who even says that kind of thing to a customer who just spent over $7000 with his company? They were also supposed to give me the piece of granite cut out for the cooktop, but after requesting it several times, I never got it. It took two visits from a "finisher/repair" technician to smooth out nicked edges, the machine-made scratches, and some bad cuts that were made. That brought job from totally unacceptable to OK, but not great. I could go on with several other issues, but I'll spare you all the details. Suffice it to say that you can do much better than Granite Works for your project if you want it done right. (I will give the receptionist an A for effort. She is polite and gracious, unlike her boss!) read more

Granite Works just finished my kitchen and I couldn't be happier. The quartz was picked out and the appointment made the same day as the order for 2 weeks later. Although my quartz was on back order it still came in on time and my original appointment was kept. The guys arrived on time (a big must have by me!), and began tearing out the old. I asked to preserve everything as I was donating it to Habitat for Humanity. They removed everything without any damage. The new pieces were installed to perfection. This is not an easy job as the pieces are so heavy! What is amazing is every piece fit perfectly. When they did measurements a couple weeks prior it was done with a laser. I also had a special request for a TV stand / cable box to be made from the cut out of the kitchen sink. It too was made to perfection. Although they had never done this before, you would have thought they had done it many times. They put everything back as it was and cleaned up after they were done. Beyond a doubt, I would have them again and i would highly recommend their company. From the receptionist to the sales floor person to the installers, everyone addressed my concerns and needs professionally and with knowledge to calm me. Zero stars! Everything went well at first until the wrong piece of granite was delivered. Mistakes do happen and I understand this, however, the owner's wife argued with me that it was the correct piece when it was not what I had ordered. Once they realized it was actually for a different customer and took a second look over my paperwork she offered no apology. 2nd attempt - the granite was cut completely wrong as if someone just did it free hand with no real measurements and they tried to say it was on me?! I left 4 messages before I got a response from anyone to set up a third appointment. Angel (owner ) who was not friendly at all on the phone finally set up another appointment. 3rd attempt - no show! I'm done with this company and asked them to cancel everything. I will be emailing the BBB if necessary to get back my money since I have received nothing but bad service! Angel did come out and review the job, we agreed the two slabs needed to be replaced and a week later the original installer came out and replaced the slabs. He scribed and ground down the one edge for a good fit. Certainly would have liked it done right the first time or the fix to be much quicker but ultimately it did get fixed. We ordered our kitchen granite and sink through them. They ordered the sink through their suggested company and had it mailed directly to us. We kept the box in the garage until they came to install the granite and sink. A part of the sink was missing and they told us since it was delivered directly we were responsible and would have to buy a new part. I tried to resolve this with their management but was told they were not liable and they would not get me the new piece. I would also be careful if you buy granite from them. The sample piece they had us take home had a nice smooth polished surface but when they delivered our countertops they were not polished well and had tons of rough spots. I was told I should have caught this when we picked out the slab which may be true. So be very careful and inspect closely when you pick out your actual slab as the polish job was very inferior. We are trying to get a bid for some cabinets, Quartz top and sinks for our master bath remodel and it has been 10 days and still no no bid after several calls and several promises. We used Granite Works for our new build. Not only were they friendly but very knowledgeable. We used them for all of our cabinets and countertops for the whole house. Please avoid this company at all costs for your granite countertops in Kalamazoo. Service and follow-up are virtually nonexistent, and the people who manage it are not customer-friendly. A project we had to schedule a few days was extended to several weeks due to delays, no return calls and incompetence. And we've been left with quality and a project that we paid thousands of dollars that we are not at all satisfied with today. read more

We signed a contract and put 50% down on 2/18/12. The installation was scheduled initially on 3/19. We went to the Portage store and picked out the actual granite on 2/25. 3/20 - Still waiting for confirmation on the delayed 3/26 installation... Will keep everybody posted on any development/progress. Will adjust ratings either up or down based on the final results. read more
