Bad mistake. This time I needed a nice plant as a present so seeing they are basically on my doorstep I drove in - what a surprise. It's actually a quite big nursery with a rather big car park too. Looking to find the best suitable plant for my friend I looked at almost all plants on display. And they all looked great with good prices. Together with pots and other gardening related items it's definitely now a place on my map. The staff was very nice and obviously enjoyed working there.

It's my first port of call when looking for quality plants in spring time and has a huge selection of bedding plants. Currently going through renovations which may mean limited stocks but it'll only mean better things to come for shoppers in the spring and summer ahead.

I was horrified this morn, half way through September, to hear an ad on the radio for Christmas…read moreparties... the first Christmas ad of the season... good god, where did that last year go? Anyway as I mulled over all things festive I happened to be on Sandymount avenue and there are the gates to Enable Ireland and their great little garden centre where I have gotten our Christmas tree for the last 4 years. I wander in, and realise that there is more here than trees and plants; they have garden tools and pellets, compost and oddly enough a selection of posters saying things like you 'don't have to be crazy to work here' yada yada yada. They also have a display of Ballydongan pottery (nope, never heard of it either) jolly nice as it happens. The garden centre is part on Enable Ireland so when you shop there you are not only getting some very nice greenery (or dodgy plaques/posters) but your cash is doing some extra good.... which is nice.

SUPPLIES!!! and my searches all ended up in tiny TINY little places where i had to dig underneath things to find other things and generally didn't find many things i needed at all. so imagine my thrill at finding Avenue Garden Centre. not only is it larger than a cupboard, they have loads of things. they have an entire area dedicated to ginormous bags of compost. another area just for pots. short of flying back to the america and going to home depot, it's the best garden store i've found within throwing distance of city centre. yes, i'm sure there are more magical places out in the burbs, but please people, i don't have a car and i don't fancy hauling 50kg bags of compost around on the LUAS. i'm sure you can understand. i was able to get there on DART, find the things i needed (and then some) and hail a nice lady cabbie (i know, right?) to get it all back to the house for me. luckily, i also had Husband with me to do the heavy lifting. oh i should also mention that the staff was also extremely helpful and friendly. i didn't feel like a complete retard asking them for help. that's a bonus in my book :)

It's one of those places…read moreyou walk into with no intention of buying anything, and then leave with a whole range of interesting items you never knew you'd ever want or need (but you need them now!) They sell all sorts, from kitchen furniture to glasses, to 'slurp' soup mugs, to banana leaf trays and garden settings. My favourite item in store is the wall-mounted wine opener, which comes in at a pretty 139 euro (ouch, but once you see it no price is too great!) A good place for some Sunday shopping if you're of the inclination. They also have an Insomnia cafe attached for those who tire of their partner's browsing habits.

Think Ikea but more expensive so keep an eye open for their sales as they generally have a good bargain to be found. When you do bite the bullet and buy something you generally still love it even after a few years and their stuff is always good quality so perhaps they may be expensive but worth it.

Szentuals is an awesome place to buy candles for your home or to give as gifts…read more They sell Kringle Candles, a company started by the son of the founder of the popular Yankee Candle. Kringle is known for its excellent quality and wide range of scents. I'm originally from Massachusetts, where both candle companies were started, and I was so excited to stumble across the place and find Kringle candles in Ireland! The prices seem expensive at first glance, but are actually quite reasonable. €2.50 for a votive the burns for 15 hours and €24 for the large apothecary jar candles that burn for between 90 and 130 hours. My favourite scents are the creme brulee and the coconut pineapple, and they are definitely worth the price. Also, the two that run the store are very friendly and are extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Kringle products!

I happened across this treasure trove of a shop the other day. Yet it turns out to be much much more than that. Walk into the shop and the building is like a TARDIS, with aisles winding further and further back into the shop. What was more impressive was the content - yes there are pretty boxes, and furnishings, but also candles, a plethora of craft items, a wide array of different coloured candles, cookery utensils, old fashioned sweets, and much much more (and at affordable prices too!). A quick internet search when I got home revealed the shop to be a "Danish lifestyle retailer... selling a range of home accessories, kitchenware and hobby items", and this Dun Laoghaire store is it's first in Ireland, Well worth a look in if you are in town.

I have to admit that I am one of these annoying people who never seem able to find what they are looking for so now I just grab someone who knows - checking first that they do work there I hasten to add. There was one day when there is 10% discount for OAP's so 'Grab a Grannie' and go shopping. In my case it is 'Grab a Great Grandmother' as I am still not old enough to benefit. Ring first and find out which is the discount day or if they still do it but from memory I think it may have been Thursday.

This is not your usual gardening type shop as they do seem to stock different bits and pieces which I had no idea I needed until I saw them but not only that the quality of the plants sold are great. Not only is this a lovely shop but the staff are very friendly and most helpful. Don't just go by what I say pop in for a look and I would be very surprised if you leave without buying something. If you want to see what is happening in a nest in your garden they sell the camera here......now all I need is a bird who is not camera shy.
