I'm giving this three stars because it is what it is, i.e. it's not five star accommodation, but it does the job. It's an old school pub with a bistro and beer garden, and rooms upstairs. It reminded me a lot of a place I stayed at in New Zealand in the tiny township of Ross, except that was way more idiosyncratic. When booking the room I'd requested one away from the roads (the hotel is on a corner) and they obliged, although it meant we were overlooking the beer garden which (being a Saturday night) had a few merry and loud punters. The floor in the corridor upstairs is unbelievably creaky; I was glad our room was up the end because otherwise we'd probably have been kept awake by other guests heading for the bathrooms. The room itself was very basic - queen bed, cupboard, and a sink; shared bathroom (toilets and showers) down the hall, with separate ones for gents and ladies. There is a communal room with a tv and tea-making supplies, and in the morning there's a toaster put out along with breakfast supplies (bread, museli, cereal). We didn't realise that the rooms didn't have facilities to allow for food prep (for example, no microwave) and had bought a few things at the Coles in Katoomba. We asked at the bistro if we could use the kitchen to heat up some soup, but they were getting slammed and understandably they weren't able to let us use it until 9pm so we improvised. But it was nice that they were prepared to let us do that given that they had a restaurant on-site. (The same staff member checked us in and chatted with us at the bistro, and she was lovely.) read more
