Like sediments deposited by each passing iteration of the empire on bits of exposed bedrock of 1000 years of agricultural heritage. One of my favorite 'other Austria' regions in the winter is the Pillerseetal. The hamlet of Sankt Ulrich is the perfect base from which to explore this area. I've spent now two weekends in the new year with my daughters at Pension Geisler in Sankt Ulrich (aka 'bei Erika'). Technically this region is part of Kitzbühel. Culturally it couldn't be more different. This is the down-to-earth, under marketed, family, affordable way to see Tyrol and scratch your mountain sports itch. Pension Geisler is a solid value traditional inn. The location is direct in the center of Sankt Ulrich am Pillersee. You have the trailheads for extensive and well-prepared cross country skiing trails in all directions beginning 100m away. The town swimming pool and sauna is directly across the street. The ski slopes of Wilder Kaiser, Pillersee, Fieberbrunn (my family's favorite), and Sankt Johann are all within a 15 minute drive. In short, the location couldn't be better. The inn itself is immaculate and cosy and very reasonably priced. Erika, the warm-hearted and matronly innkeeper is attentive and overall a joy to work with. Breakfast is continental style, fresh and generously proportioned. If you're looking for a family getaway I highly recommend coming to Sankt Ulrich and staying at Pension Geisler. * * * Here are some additional tips for winter-time activities in the area: 1. Go cross-country skiing. bergfex.com/tirol/langla... You can rent everything you need at the local shop SINUS sinus-sportadventures.at. The beginning of the Sankt Ulrich trails is 100M from Pension Geisler. 3. Apres-ski is low key here. Forget the bars and nightclubs of the big resorts. Walk instead to the public pool in Sankt Ulrich hallenbad-stulrich.at and after swimming treat the family to Asian Fusion and play a hand of Uno at Tortuga (same building) restaurant-tortuga.at while everybody's hair dries. 4. The region's smaller resorts aren't yet linked; one of the bigger interconnection projects comes to fruition in December 2015; so there's some driving still involved this spring. Fieberbrunn is a ten minute drive from Sankt Ulrich and has sufficient terrain on and off-piste for a long weekend bergbahnen-fieberbrunn.a.... If you're staying longer be sure to check out Sankt Johann sanktjohann.com/en/home...., Wilder Kaiser skiwelt.at/en or any of the smaller village ski lifts 5. Take in the grandeur of the Great Empire architecture sprinkled throughout the towns as you drive. Attend mass in one of the villages' gothic or baroque churches

It was also so well-designed, with three separate sleeping areas and two baths, making it very comfortable for a large family. The children's pools and wellness areas were a hit with our family, and my husband and I were able to indulge in visits to the adult-only spa/pools as well, thanks to the children's programs. We will have daydreams about this beautiful place. In addition, the e-biking is so much fun, and the surrounding area offers many dedicated bike trails. This was a perfect vacation, and we appreciated the hospitality of Stanglwirt.

Ladies and Gentlemen - they really do exist!! The small, excellent hotels - outside of the big…read morechains! And a perfect example is the "Hotel Sonnenhof" in Going am Wilden Kaiser. It is a family-run exquisit hotel with 40 rooms, a big indoor pool and an excellently designed thermal and wellness area. Bio-Sauna, Tyrol-Sauna, Sole-Steambath, Infrared-Cabin - you name it, you find it in the "Sonnenhof". The "Sonnenhof" is at the foot of the "Wilder Kaiser", one of the most impressive mountain-chains in the Alps. Here in Going you are right in the center of the largest ski-area in Austria. Kitzbühl, the famous village with the even more famous downhill-course "Streif" is just around the corner ---- and, thankfully, the price-level of Kitzbühl is also "around the corner"! One more thing absolutely needs to be mentioned: the food in the "Sonnenhof" is simply sensational. It starts with a very nice breakfast buffet, followed by a snack for lunch, a typical tyrolian "Marende Jause" in the afternoon and a brilloiant 5 course meal for dinner. And all this is included in the "Halfboard Plan".......... In closing I would like to mention that staying in the "Sonnenhof" is just PERFECT!!!! If you are looking for cosy atmosphere, excellent food and personal service - the "Sonnenhof" must not be missed!

The rooms are really well fitted out and my children loved the bed a circular double bed with a bed above it (like bunk beds), very exciting. The food was good with 4 course evening meals and free after ski snack. The hotel owner goes out of his way to provide evening entertainment as the hotel is a little way out of town. He ran a free bowling night with prizes. A winter candlelit walk through the village with Schnapps, and a trip to the ski instructors show in nearby Ellmau. I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again my self!
