He then led us in, cutting that looooong line of people who arrived by bus. We visited the Gardens first ( beautiful gardens, the old hunting areas...) then led us through the chateau. The crowd is unbelievable, but they made us move along, stopping at the rooms to hear the description. It's so amazing. Then back to the van, and we visited the Grand Trianon, then the Petit Trianon. Here they don't allow the private guides, so we visited on our own. The gardens here are beautiful with flowers and lilac trees and cherry blossoms trees. Then back in the van and back to Paris. The visit lasted about 5-6 hours and we got to see sooo much.

When we were deciding on a ticket for the Palace of Versailles, we were going back and forth with…read morewhether to add on the additional trip into the gardens. Was it worth it? Really? ...omg, yes! In fact, I found the gardens to be far more enjoyable than the palace itself. This beautifully crafted garden is a sight in itself. It is MASSIVE. With only 1.5 hours left before closing, we were almost at a loss on what parts of the garden to really see and explore. We spent a majority of our time looking down at the labyrinth of beautifully decorated garden mazes. There are stunning views from above just outside the palace. Parts of the gardens also have comfortable rest areas with benches, and even fountains that do shows every hour. We were lucky enough to catch the fountain shows that were entertaining and beautiful. One thing we regret not doing is getting a mode of transit to make visiting the gardens a lot easier. I wish we either had bikes or a golf trolly to drive around to make it quicker to go from spot to spot. I recommend bringing some snacks here if you can so you can enjoy the gardens and make it almost like a picnic spot for your visit.

Le Petit Trianon was the refuge from the court of Vesailles for Marie Antoinette. It was gifted to…read moreher by her husband, Louis XVI in 1774. We entered Le Petit Trianon and straight away followed the outdoor path to the Temple of Love. We contined on to the Queens Hamlet; a wonderful walkable and lovely stroll that takes you back to another time. There are rustic cottages that guests of the Queen stayed in upon her invitation. Herbs and vegetables grown in the gardens were used for meals. Ilthe property also included a dairy. There are waterways and unique and prized trees planted throughout. We spent more than half of the afternoon exploring this area, so we had run out of time to go inside Le Petit Trianon! Its only opened from 12pm-5:30pm, so it would be best to plan ahead according to what you want to see. There is so much to explore! We enjoyed this more than dealing with the crowds at Versailles. Take the little train one or both ways, ( stops at the grand canal, and Le Grand and Petit Trianon) which was 9 euros when we visited in Feb 2026. Be sure to find out beforehand when the last little train leaves, as we missed it. Its about a 30 minute walk back to the Palace from Le Petit Trianon.

You can rent a golf cart or hop on a mini-train, but if weather permits, the walk is not bad at all. Mom and I came here as part of our day trip to Versailles, and we both loved visiting these little chateaux. While they are both a good bit smaller than Versailles, each is quite grand (in every sense of the word). Mom and I especially enjoyed seeing the furnished rooms and beautiful views from the windows. Warning: the signage is not particularly extensive, so it's easy to get turned around. It's not the end of the world (the gardens are lovely as can be), but do plan for a bit of wandering. Enjoy the peace. Side note: definitely visit the Queen's Hamlet. It's super fun: imagine an interpretation of a small English village, complete with thatched roofs.

There's an orchard, tons of trees, flowerbeds, and so on. A wonderful place to spend a relaxing afternoon having lunch and watching the activity around you. Tranquil and inviting.

At one side of the park, there were tennis courts that were filled with plenty of people walking about during the middle of a work day. And there were sand pits too with little kiddos running around. And as you continue walking, there was a palace looking structure with a fountain out front. It was a beautiful sight to behold. The shrubbery and flowers in the area were so pretty even in the fall. There were chairs aplenty so taking a moment to enjoy the scenery was such a Parisian thing to do. Walking throughout the park, there were interesting statues everywhere. We even stumbled upon a miniature Statute of Liberty that was gifted from the United States to France. If you have some time, take a quick walk through the garden. It's really pretty and clean.

This is exactly why it's worth a visit - add something a bit different to your Paris trip. Landscape design is outstanding - you will find an artificial lake, a grotto and waterfalls. One of the two bridges was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The park is hilly and you can enjoy amazing views of Paris from different points. One of the highest points is Temple de la Sibylle (50m above the lake). You can see Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre from here. This place is great for running - you can do flat circles around the lake or hilly runs everywhere, there are some 8 kilometers of roads and paths. One of the three restaurants, Rosa Bonheur, is really popular, it may take an hour of waiting to get in on weekends. You can find 5 areas with free Wi-Fi in the park. There's a renovation going on in the park from 2013 till 2016, some areas may be closed (Temple de la Sibylle is closed at the time of writing).

Exploring the area, I found this gem of a Parc. I love exploring where the locals go for relaxation and where they eat. After a tasty meal nearby, my friend Mats flew in from London and we explored this lovely park. We mostly stayed under the tree lined paths because it was a hot day. For a park, we were here on a Wednesday around 2pm, lots of people looking like they are having a siesta or a break from work. Everyone seemed friendly, kept to themselves. The park is rich with different plants, trees and flowers. We hiked up to the highest point, from here you have an observation look out on the rooftops of Paris and a gorgeous view of Sacre Coeur. On the way to the top, you get to cross a bridge and below is a little lake. Some parts are rather steep, go at your own pace and bring a bottled water on a hot day and a plus if you wear a hat. Every turn you go into this park had something appealing. If you look at my images, there is also a cave. During raining season, the cave has a waterfall in it, it's very pretty. Plenty of grass room to have a picnic, take a nap or read a book. If you opt for something else, lots of park benches that faces the lake. A wonderful oasis in the heart of Paris. On our first visit, we accidentally stood on some grass for a photo, but were gently told by the park attendents that we were not supposed to. Once these graciouus ladies realized we were from outside of France, they permitted my wife stand on the grass for our first photo is Paris. What a Joy!!!

The question is whether you'd want to come back as a more seasoned Francophile tourist. Despite being constantly overcrowded, the answer is definitely yes. This has been the definitive green space that has epitomized classic garden architecture since the 16th century. The fountains, geometric layout, the Musee de l'Orangerie, and ornate statues by the likes of Rodin and Maillol give it the traditional French style we come to expect in Paris. It's also an unquestionable hub for social activity with playgrounds and sailboats on the Grand Bassin. Unfortunately, Jamie W and I weren't here during one of the seasonal events like the summer Fête des Tuileries when a carnival midway is set up, or Paris Fashion Week when runways are built and celebrities flock in frocks, or the Christmas market. Benches, trees, paved paths, it's a very nice little park. A nice little rest as you're going from hotel to the restaurant area of Roissy-en-France.
