We stayed for a hockey tournament on a very busy winter weekend. The staff were kind and accommodating. The rooms were clean and spacious. We really appreciated the rollaway bed during our stay. The pool area was fun. The restaurant was good. The view from our room was beautiful. I was worried about pet or snowmobile noise but we had no issues. Most notably we left things behind in the room. Our fault but the staff was very helpful in getting it back to us. This may have been the first time a hotel has confirmed our forgotten items and facilitated their return. read more

We stopped here for lunch after hiking the Kawishiwi Falls Trail. It was a recommendation and we are glad we followed it. They have beautiful patio views but the patio was closed when we visited so we sat inside and enjoyed the views from the windows. I wanted something really light and just got a side salad which ended up being pretty big. All the ingredients were fresh and it was just what I was looking for. Husband had the club sandwich which was also very good. It came with chips. Service was excellent. It was fairly busy in there so all the servers were on their toes keeping up with everyone. This review is for the restaurant in the lobby of the lodge called, Evergreen. From day one of our arrival in Ely, everyone told us we had to go have lunch at the "Lodge" and order the Bluegill Salad. With so many endorsements, we made it a point to go and we all ordered the salad. I did watch the serving of other dishes to tables around us and it all looked good, especially the burgers. Now I will tell you about our salad, the famous Wild Bluegill Salad. Its crisp breaded bluegill fillets, wild rice, dried cranberries, pecan pieces and salad greens, all topped with a wild raspberry vinaigrette. The mixture of these ingredients and the house made dressing made a very flavorful lunch. We enjoyed a Chardonnay as our adult beverage and it was the perfect accompaniment. I can see why, everyone told us to eat here and to order the salad. They were short staffed, but the service was still professional, attentive and friendly. If our server did not admit up front that they were short staffed, we may not even had noticed. The lodge is beautiful, if I didn't have a cousins cabin to stay in, this is where I'd stay in Ely. read more

Went here for my wife's Birthday. Excellent place to get away from everything. Very clean and cozy with good service. The on-site restaurant was also very good. With a nice menu selection and also good bar. The one issue I had with this place was the snow-mobiliers coming in out of the snow smelling like oil and gas and filling up the place with fumes. The smell only lasted a little while but was nauseating at the time. The should have a separate "mud room" area for these people to come in through. read more

They allowed us to check in super early. All of the workers at the front were always super nice & helpful. We ordered food from one of the restaurants & was told it would be ready in 20 minutes and instead it took an hour and a half. Probably the only downfall. Outside our rooms were some chairs to watch the sunset & sunrise, which are absolutely stunning in that area. Only issue we had was the room next to us & their dog who kept attacking others. The pool & hot tub were wonderful as well. I really liked that they had towels down in the pool room so we didn't have to use our room towels. read more

Brittons closed down or temporarily closed so it broke our hearts but found the unique and sweet spot , sat inside having our hot chocolate, breakfast and watch the snow fall! Service was very sweet! Excellent restaurant but hotel rooms need a major upgrade. Bathroom shower is way too low! Air conditioning didn't cool room or remove humidity. Staff were very rude. For over $200 per night, it was a rip off. All resorts and other lodging options were already booked so Grand Lodge was our only option. I will never stay there again!!! read more

We stayed in February for Winterfest, and enjoyed our stay! We got a room with the jetted tub, and that was great for relaxing after being outside in the winter weather. I have been coming to this hotel since 2016 for 2 one night stays during my trips to the boundary waters. The place over the years hasn't changed. The beds are comfortable enough. The prices for the rooms are exorbitant for what you're getting. The staff are nice but never seem to recognize repeat customers (must not be in their system). I never get sent any emails from the facility for booking codes or potential discount. And after a bad experience of being on the bottom floor during a wedding, I specifically always ask to not be on the bottom floor as you can't get rest from all the noise and stomping and door slamming you can hear. They told me this last time where they could see where I asked for a top floor a year in advance but still gave me the bottom floor...guess what..no wedding but I could hear the people walking above, slamming of door and noise. There is no insulation and the facility is aware but booking a year in advance they still couldn't accommodate their lack of insulation. The window when I stayed the first time before entering the BWCA felt like it was gonna fall out when I gently pressed on the wood frame. The whirlpool has pieces that come off the top and mold is inside it. And the restaurant is good but the Flys year after year are so annoying and yes I get they can't get them all but oh my, sometimes people don't want to shew Flys away from their food the whole time. Was excited to have a nice dinner, but that was not the case. No crab in the crab stuffed mushroom caps. Salmon Oscar was made with imitation crab, and white sauce on pasta didn't have any flavor. The Ceasar salad was actually good and a large portion, so didn't leave starving. Definitely won't be back. read more

Gems Ely Lodge is the best. The grounds were beautiful and the staff was fabulous. The restaurant was delightful. The best was the bar. The staff was super cool and the drinks were omg perfect. This lodge is slightly off the Main Street in Ely and near Lake Shagawa. The check-in lady was super friendly and helpful and genuinely seemed glad to have us as guests. Nice sauna, indoor pool, kiddy pool and hot tub. After a quick soak in the hot tub we went to check out the bar. EXCELLENT and strong drinks, and the popcorn hit the spot. The hotel was quiet and we slept great (perhaps because of aforementioned cocktails!). We ate a wonderful breakfast the next morning and then headed down to their marina for a complimentary hydrobike ride--canoes, kayaks, and pontoon boats are also available. After pedaling around some islands and seeing a couple of bald eagles, it was time to head back and check out. Definitely recommend this place! read more

Chicken was rubbery and crust was soggy, the employees were very disrespectful. Beautiful view, terrible service. Got kicked out of the pool for being to loud and playing water polo with family. Obviously did not renovate while the COVID-19 break was happening. There was a crack in the counter and the jacuzzi timer fell off the wall. Definitely not consistent rooms or cleaning. Stopped in for a cocktail and a bite to eat while out snowmobiling for an afternoon in Ely. Customer service was very good and the food was tasty. And of course, how can you go wrong, when the location is perfectly situated right off the lake and on the trail? Highly recommend. read more

This lodge is right outside Ely. We did not stay here, but ate dinner in the dinning room one night when we were visiting Ely. We arrived early and did not make reservations, but we were seated by the window with a lovely lake view. I ordered the walleye broiled and it was good. We stayed at the Grand Ely Lodge for two nights and really liked it. The room was a nice size, and it included a couch, a mini refrigerator, coffee maker, and microwave. They have an additional sink outside the bathroom which us nice when 2 people are trying to get ready to go out or one wants to make a pot of coffee while the other is in the shower. Great views of the beautiful Shagawa Lake. We were on the 3rd floor so had a view out the window, but our friends were on the first floor and they had a walk-out to a little patio and the grounds. That was really nice. If we return, I might choose one of those rooms instead, except that it was rather damp and musty down there - it's actually a floor below the main floor. I loved that they offer non-motorized water sport equipment (canoes, kayaks, paddle boards) for free. We kayaked both days. It's beautiful out on the lake! (They also have motorized options, for a fee.) You can walk into town from here, along a nice shady path, in about 15 minutes. We only had one meal here, breakfast, and it was good. The staff were all very friendly. read more

After having a not so great experience with another local lodge last year, our fishing guide recommended the Grand Ely Lodge (GEL) on this trip as our night before we go out into the wilderness stay. Before I go where no man may be seen for 7 days with our group of guys, I like to have a few comforts. *Air Conditioned Hotel Room *Good food *Bar *Nice Bed * Cable/Satellite TV *Good Shower *WI-Fi *Cell Service "GEL" offers them all. We had a great time on our trip and it all started so well here at this lodge. We will be back next year. Only complaint was that it was extremely hot in the dinning room and lobby. It was in the upper 80's, and it looked as if all of the locals were quite comfortable. Food was Good, not Great. Though nothing was bad. read more

The Antler's Lounge has a Land of 10,000 Lakes Sandwich. Lemme just say that it is the BEST walleye you will ever have in your life!!! The walleye literally drapes over either side of the hoagie and covers the plate. You need 3 hands to eat this bad boy! I make the drive up here from Minneapolis JUST for the 10,000 Lakes sandwich. It puts all the other restaurants that serve walleye to shame. Not to mention the atmosphere is beautiful with very friendly staff. Highly recommend! Cheers! read more

Came here for a nice dinner with family. The view was gorgeous (Lakes, pines, clouds, oh my!), particularly at sunset, and the food was very good. I had a chicken stir fry and not much of it was left. The same could be said for the rest of our 6 person party. The service was also good-fast, friendly and efficient. If I crave a reuben while in Ely, this is the place I go to. The sandwich comes on a marble rye, with a good amount of corned beef (Cecli's deli-pay attention), good sauce, kraut and some of the best fries I've had at any restaurant. If you eat in the dining room or antlers lounge, there is a nice view of shagawa lake from the windows or the outdoor deck. Perhaps the location makes me think the reuben is so good-how can you not love Ely? read more
