This is a hidden gem in Ely, MN. Stayed 3 nights. With 3 nights the owners let me canoe for a day in BWCA nearby. Dropping and picking up canoe for the afternoon with directions, map and lifevest. I Enjoyed an afternoon canoeing with my dog. The Inn was clean and conveniently located downtown Ely and walkable to all the shops, restaurants and park. My stay included complimentary coffee and bakery item at Northern Grounds coffee and wine bar a block away. Both the coffee and muffin/scones were pretty amazing! There was a common kitchen with refrigerator, sitting room with fireplace. Coffee and tea available 24/7. I really appreciated them making me and my little dog feel so welcome and taken care of. My room was spotlessly clean with plenty of towels and a handmade soap. No need to bring much all the toiletries were there including a hairdryer. Outside seating was available on the deck. The other guests were friendly and pretty respectful of quiet hours so I slept well. Should I return to ELY, MN again I will stay at THE STAY INN and will recommend to anyone headed to the area. read more

My fiancé and I find A Stay Inn to be something truly special. We've been coming up here the last couple years and we always stay in the Evergreen Room. When you first arrive you almost get that feeling that you have arrived at your grandmothers house and she prepared a room for you. A little history of A Stay Inn, The house at 112 West Sheridan was owned by Matti Luomanmaki. He was born September 3, 1874 in Lapua, Finland. He married Hilma Rantala June 22, 1894. Hilma was born June 22, 1869 in Tistenjoki, Finland. On May 25, 1902 Matt Luomanmaki arrived in New York and settled in Pennsylvania as a coal miner. Hilma arrived three years later with five of their children. Working in the coal mines undermined Matt's health, so in 1906 the family moved to Ely where the climate was much like their native land. Matt and Hilma raised nine children in this house instilling in them their faith in God, their high ideals, and their strength of character. On July 11, 1922 Matt and Hilma became citizens of the United States of America. Their name was shortened to Maki. Matt was a soft-spoken man who worked at the Pioneer Mine until he retired at the age of 65. On September 24, 1944 Matt passed away of lung and heart problems. Hilma was happy by nature, pushing troubles aside and standing firm and strong to what ever life had in store for her. She was a tireless worker for her church and the good of humanity as she was always ready to give and never wanting to receive. Hilma loved to make people laugh and was as generous as Matt was frugal. On August 9, 1955, a heart attack took her as she sat peacefully in her favorite rocking chair. The current owners of A Stay Inn also invite us to their local cafe' called Northern Ground for a complementary muffin and coffee for staying at the Inn. We are so happy to be able to stay here and enjoy the sights that Ely has to offer. One of our favorite places to go is Bass Lake Trail which is also next to Dry Lake Trail. It's a 6 mile hike that you would not soon forget. It's a blast. Also how combiner the Inn is, it's next to everything from a gas station, to a local movie theatre. This is probably the cleanest place I have ever stayed in! It was cozy and the bed was super comfortable. The shared kitchen was awesome, the coffee was pretty good, and the shared space looked welcoming. Management is very responsive as well. The wall heater was too loud for me, so management brought me a space heater that was more than adequate and much more quiet. It's the perfect place for groups - everyone gets their own room with a great shared living room/kitchen area. I'd go back there in a minute. read more

Cozy and intimate inn. We stayed here twice: once in the Evergreen Room (two single beds and a love seat) and once in the Amber Room (one queen bed, one single bed, a set of bunk beds and a wood settee). The rooms are clean and cozy. Furnishings are simple yet charming. The bathrooms are clean, updated and feature hot showers with nice water pressure. Another good lodging option in town is the Grand Ely Lodge, but A Stay Inn Ely is much more charming and offers more of an "authentic" Ely experience. Plus, A Stay Inn Ely is right on the main street in town so you can easily walk to the restaurants and bars and shops in town. The first floor features a common area living room and kitchen. The coffee shop that is just down the road offers complimentary coffee and pastries in the mornings to guests of the inn. On Sunday, when the coffee shop was closed, the pastries were delivered to the inn first thing in the morning. We had a lovely time lounging in the living room in front of the fireplace and enjoying the delicious coffee and pastries. I will definitely stay at A Stay Inn Ely when I am back in town next month! read more

My family went to Ely for a day trip dog sled. After 2 days of driving from Katy, TX, we really found Stay Inn very pleasant. We enjoyed staying there. It's very homey and clean with a good kitchen facility.The owner, Don Beans was very helpful and nice from the moment we made an arrangement until we left. The location is right in the downtown area, with easy access to local restaurants and supermarkets. Their bakery has an amazing pastries for your breakfast. My favorite is the scone! You certainly get more for the price you paid. I highly recommend it! read more

Don Beans & his wife Joan run this quaint B&B in downtown Ely which is located close to all the pubs, restaurants & shops. Don remodeled this old house using different woods from the area, which gives the rooms an up north cabin look. Very clean & charming. Guests can use the kitchen area and living room area that has a gas fireplace, nice for cool evenings. For your complimentary breakfast, just walk a 1/2 block down the street to the Basketree Bakery for a fresh out of the oven pastry & cup of coffee. Joan runs this bakery and it is also a nice gift shop. Don runs a fishing guide service on Jasper Lake that compliments this B&B. read more

The most delightful spot to stay in downtown Ely! We had no idea what to expect on our way up but we were completely charmed as soon as we walked in. Each room we saw was rustically charming and cozy with all wood floors, ceilings, and walls and most importantly, comfy beds. Plus there's a little kitchen for use downstairs as well as a living room with a fireplace and games. We will definitely be back next time we head up north. read more

My daughter and I have stayed here several times as we use Don's Jasper Creek guide service. The location is convenient to walk to the shops on Main St. The rooms are quiet, clean and comfortable. There is free parking. The community kitchen is nice if you want to cook something and not eat out. The other guests we've met have always been pleasant. We've never had anything stolen from the community fridge. Before Don bought and renovated the Inn, we stayed at 2-3 of the motels in town. We like this Inn much better and highly recommend it. Grabbed literally the last room in Ely after a rough weather day in the BWCA and it was perfect! Owner was so helpful and friendly and graciously dropped what she was doing to come and help us navigate the door lock that wouldn't cooperate. WEST LOFT Double loft suite and a shared kitchen were exactly what five bug eaten, stinky, wet and frazzled travelers needed to dry out and regroup. The rooms are classic North woods- clean, comfy, and homey. Had a little trouble getting onto the wifi but that may have been more user error than facility issue. read more

We booked a trip to go dog sledding up in Ely and then started to figure out where to stay for a night or two. The first thing that was appealing was the location - right downtown within walking distance to the shops and restaurants. Next - the homy feel with the shared kitchen, dining and living room/fireplace. Complimentary breakfast from Don's bakery - fresh bread, scones, muffins, etc. The deal was sealed and when we checked in our expectations were exceeded. Lovely, clean and quiet. Just what you need for the money since you are likely going to be spending your time outdoors anyway. Don was a most excellent host giving us all the tips of food and drink, as well as some safety tips for our drive out to Wintergreen for dog sledding. Don also has a great story to go along with the Inn- so be sure to ask how he came about moving to Ely. You will find wonderful folks all over this town, but we truly enjoyed our stay at "A Stay Inn Ely" and would go back in a second without question. read more

What a relief to find the Stay Inn. This summer I'll be visiting Ely for the seventh time. It's a great little town that is seriously lacking in decent accommodations. After 4 or 5 nights out in the bush, all I want is a good bed and a nice hot shower, and last year I discovered the Stay Inn. The bathrooms are updated, clean, and civilized. The bed was actually good, not just acceptable, but good. The common area is nicely decorated and comfortable. Oh my gosh, I can still feel the wonderful feeling of sliding my weary body into bed after our last trip. After years of spending my after paddling night in Ely tossing, turning, and wishing I was sleeping on the ground, the Stay Inn is the only place I'll stay when I'm in Ely. read more
