I have made quite a few trips on this road, primarily on the northern stretch between the Bay Area, through Point Reyes, and up to Mendocino County. My partner, the lifelong Californian, even more so. It's a two-lane road, one in each direction, for nearly the entire 600+ mile stretch, which is very cool. Unbeatable views of the Pacific. For all of California's human-inflicted problems, seeing the state's natural beauty reminds us how lucky we are to be here. The road is very windy in many spots, so if you suffer from motion sickness as I do, Dramamine is an absolute must. Be ready to use the turnouts to let other drivers pass by. Keep your eyes peeled and be ready to brake for deer and other crossing critters. On our most recent trip, there was a family of quail crossing. You never know what you're going to see. Be patient and respect all kinds. Be safe, and happy travels along CA-1!

Run by volunteers, they pay (I believe) $5 a rent in year for the space and want people there learning about the history of the area to help justify that cost! I enjoyed the very cute exhibits, going back to the Ohlone (the Native American tribe of the area--who are still around!) to the Gold Rush and the present-day. Lots to learn here.

I signed the guestbook at the end of my walk. Good place to hang around/includes unlimited paper, paper/pencils/samples/etc. If you like to sketch and get some creative inspirations, all the nature artworks in the gallery is definitely a good place to start. Not huge, but perfectly quite and calm for art lovers. You can request for an orientation and/or tour as desired. Great first impression during first visit. It's the positive feeling I get from observing the energy and various colorful artworks. Simple and stress-free. Good value/free admissions is totally worth the 1-2 hours here.
