First of all, one doesn't just walk in off the street and join in, we have to be referred by a physician. Our cardiologist sent us here after a procedure a few weeks ago. After an orientation, we were shown the gym, equipped with modern equipment, free weights, isometric ribbons and other tools. Machines range from low impact cross-trainers to weight machines. There are several treadmills and a 132 foot walking track. (That means 40 laps makes a mile.) Each of us is fitted with a telemetry unit that monitors our heart rates in a central location. Each patient's weight, blood pressure, oxygenation and heart rates are closely monitored throughout the session. Cleanliness is job one, we all wash our hands several times during a session. We wipe down all equipment with sanitation sheets when we complete our reps. There are locker rooms and a shower. Most of us carry in exercise clothes and shoes to take advantage of the locker room. The staff is professional and they all obviously enjoy their work. They are sincerely dedicated to our health and our hearts' rehabilitation. There is a Lab/X-ray center on the same floor (it shares a waiting room) which is extremely convenient if your doctor orders any tests. There has only been one occasion I had to go to a separate facility, but that was for a unique blood test. An advantage to the Wheaton system is they offer online scheduling, emailing with your doctor, prescription refill request, etc. through a program called "MyChart". I work weird hours, so this has been especially helpful for managing things I don't have time for during regular business hours. Also, I've been able to get results faster on my own without having to come to the office.
