Alright, alright, alright...
I am currently attending Gracie Technics Jiu-Jitsu in Troutdale. Having previous experiences in other martial arts throughout my life, I am very appreciative of everything I have learned. I have never been good at martial arts, but I love the learning and challenge.
Saying that, I am super happy to have joined this place!
Let the review begin:
Educational: coaches Josh and James are very nice and pretty funny at times. As expected, they are very knowledgeable of the art. I like the fact that when there is a question, they ask the student to "show" them. I find that very important for two reasons: 1) many times I have met instructors who are so fossilized in their way of thinking (and teaching) that it makes the practice sessions and learning stagnant; (2) this shows the adaptability and flexibility of the martial art itself (I think the same can be said of the instructors and students). Also, both coaches are very approachable, always asking for questions - makes the learning more active and student-centered, and fun!
Culture: I am fairly new to this place and the martial art, but I am aware of the risk and damage that can be done if people are careless and disrespectful. However, at this place all belts from top-to-bottom and from bottom-to-top, safety and no-egos resonates throughout the academy. I like to ask other students about strategies and here feedback about what I can do to improve. Thus far, I have had very helpful feedback and suggestions.
Longevity: even as a beginner and being in pretty good shape for my age (still able to flex in the mirror without laughing or ugly-crying), the workouts are/can be intense. However, my body has a "positive" ache - I am tired and achy afterwards, but am able to workout the next day. Of course there are the occasional bumps and bruises, and scrapes. However, the safety and care is always the priority here.
This all goes back to the first two points above about the coaches and students. Furthermore, this all creates a positive feedback loop, which allows and encourages the student for continual learning, i.e. no plateau effect, physically or mentally.
Affordability and Accessibility: I don't know what the going rate is for bjj or other martial arts, but I think this place is very reasonably priced. And there are classes offered every day of the week. Definitely one gets their money's worth.
I could go on and on. But there are better reviews to be read. All I can say, based on my previous experiences in martial arts and being at this academy, is that this place has a very positive and active culture for learning bjj that resonates throughout. And this type of culture expands beyond just about martial arts and fitness; this is also about learning of one's self. And that is why I always say "thank you."
P.S. Another important feature is there is the cutest dog hanging out...super friendly and always ready to "roll" with anyone and everyone. read more
