As a first time mom, choosing Gracefull was the best decision I could have ever made! The entire staff from the girls at the desk to the midwives, student midwives, and even Elizabeth the owner herself went above and beyond to give us the best chance at having a smooth, successful, empowering birth experience. What I learned at Gracefull has left me with invaluable tools for not just motherhood but life in general, like gaining a newfound ability to trust in my own power and surrender to the unknown. So glad I did my research :) TRUE HOLISTIC CARE I've been diagnosed with bipolar and anxiety which made me question my ability to be a mother at all. I was terrified about postpartum depression, not bonding with our baby, and repeating intergenerational trauma. I was looking for a birthing team to help me heal, gain courage and become an adequate adult over the course of my pregnancy. This wasn't an easy task but somehow they helped me feel totally prepared in that holistic mind, body, spirit way. The childbirth education classes included with the birth package were all we needed, and the postpartum visits set us up for success. All the bases were covered in a warm, friendly but professional way which was a completely different vibe from the gynecologist we started off with. THE MIDWIVES Every midwife and student midwife at Gracefull has such a unique vibe and style and they are all AMAZING! My pregnancy was a rollercoaster and energy wise, every meeting felt serendipitous in terms of what was needed. Even if I showed up in total panic, I ALWAYS felt held, heard, supported and never rushed in safe nonjudgmental space. I would leave each meeting with a sense of relief and confidence, and my husband felt the same :) There was a lot I wasn't able to communicate with him and he appreciated the midwives translating my concerns and being able to hold me accountable in ways he couldn't. LABOR AND DELIVERY We ended up working mostly with Heba who was a total ROCKSTAR. She comes from a nursing background and we appreciated her very practical way of approaching things. My husband especially needed her support when I was in labor and our doula kinda dropped the ball. Heba's top notch communication and professional experience was the reason our delivery went smoothly when it could've easily been a total mess. Not only that, but when my fears and emotions were so out of control nearing the birth that I was veering into suicidal territory, she made the call for us to set up a meeting with the owner Elizabeth to do some last minute trauma work with me and my husband a WEEK before the delivery which completely turned the tide on my mental state. "If the 16 year old in you births this baby, you're going to get transported. The 33 year old HAS to birth this baby," she said. This meeting seriously rewired my brain, and I feel like everyone was able to tell -- she even told the other midwife in the room (Dana) at the end "well, we may have just prevented another hospital transport." It was nice to feel so BELIEVED IN which helped me have the confidence to believe in myself as well, when at that point I really wasn't sure I'd be able to do this. IS THIS THE RIGHT OPTION FOR YOU? Something to understand about this process is that a natural childbirth isn't guaranteed. There's definitely luck involved but everyone at Gracefull is so genuinely invested in your success that they do their very best to keep you low risk to have the birth you want. That means YOU have to do the work too though and I can see how that might not be for everyone. I was ready and willing to do ANYTHING for a serious transformation into motherhood, and the midwives met me where I was at. The more honest, vulnerable and willing to do what they say you are, (I had to walk 5 miles a day and totally change my diet) the more they'll bring. If you're that kinda person, you're gonna absolutely love this experience. I still can't believe I was able to get naked and push an actual human out of me after a 40 hour labor completely unmedicated. I used to always cringe at the mention of childbirth and be disgusted with the whole concept (and my body). Now after being a mom for over a year, I can say that it's surprisingly the best thing I've ever done. I'm so grateful that that this is the birth story my entire family will carry into the future because it really does feel like a conscious choice to end negative cycles -- such an empowering reminder that change is possible. From the moment we decided on having a birth center birth, to my 6week post partum visit, the midwife team went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, cared for, and safe. We received outstanding care every step of the way, and had the most positive out of hospital birth experience one could ask for. Both Heba and Dana spent every visit with us making sure all of our questions were thoroughly answered, our worries were addressed, and our baby was healthy throughout my entire pregnancy. My 12 hours of labor was comfortable and all of my wishes and needs were met, and they helped me bring my beautiful baby girl into the world in such a special way. I came here hoping for a caring ear for some persistent female health issues but found this place to be very lacking. My appointments were consistently late in excess of 30 minutes and the front desk staff didn't so much as offer a cup of water. I found one girl to be so rude that the stress of dealing with her to be too much. In addition to this I didn't feel heard or feel solutions offered to me were anything new and some things I outright said were a no for me were ignored. Perhaps if you need a midwife this place can be great but overall it felt expensive, uncaring and rushed here and so I will not be returning. read more

Please don't go here. They showed up to my birth hours late, without proper equipment, and did not help me at all. They called an ambulance almost immediately and separated me from my partner. It's a long story but after my water broke they failed my baby in every way possible. Due to their negligence my healthy baby got an infection and had to spend one week in the NICU. Thank goodness my baby is healthy and happy, no thanks to them. Beware birthing people these people are dangerous!!! Also, it's so creepy that the owner is on here arguing with clients they have failed like a child--or a corporate marketer. I meant to post a review a long time ago! This review is 2 years late, but better late than never, right? I had a successful VBAC at Gracefull. The traumatic experience I had in a hospital with my first is what prompted me to reach out to Gracefull. It was meant to be because they had just developed a relationship with my insurance company, and I was actually the first patient from Aetna. I could make this review look like a novel, but I'll try to be brief with bullet points. 1. They ask about and 100% respect your traumas and boundaries. They allow you to decline any exams you're uncomfortable with including weighing. I did most of my prenatal visits with Naomi and I delivered and did my postnatal visits with Amy. I worked with just about everyone throughout the process and the treatment I received was consistent with every provider there. 2. Naomi probably saved my life my making me (yes, making me) start weekly therapy before I gave birth because they knew I was at high risk for developing postpartum. And develop postpartum depression, I did. With the pandemic isolation being new at the time, it hit me really hard, too. But because they made me start weekly therapy sessions, I already had a therapist who I was comfortable with to help me through postpartum depression. If you're are reading this, thank you 1000x. Thank you. 3. At Gracefull, I was treated like a person and not like a Black person. IYKYK. That shouldn't be rare, but it is incredibly rare. If I said something didn't feel right, I was listened to. If I had a concern, it was addressed. I was treated with care and respect. 4. Having my daughter here healed a lot of what was broken within me from the traumatic hospital experience that I had with my son. I believe in myself and in my body again. I don't know if I'll have more children or not, but if I do, I'll come back here without question. Thank you to the entire team of midwives and receptionists. read more

I had such a beautiful experience with the team at Gracefull! I gave birth to my daughter in March at the center under the guidance of Carolina and Anja. I felt safe and supported throughout the whole experience and we're so grateful for them. Prior to the birth I went to Gracefull for my prenatal care starting at 20ish weeks. In this time I built relationships with Heba, Dana, Julia, and Tayelor so I always felt listened to and cared for. I noticed an immediate difference in care when I switched over from the medical office I was going to. Each visit was treated with so much patience to make sure all of our questions were answered and on top of that we had access to the midwife hotline and online portal for any questions or concerns that arose. The prenatal courses provided were so helpful and we were provided so many resources so we felt as prepared as we could be. We were fortunate enough to be able to deliver safely in the water. Knowing too that there were many contingency plans in place in the event of things not going according to plan gave me a great sense of comfort. The fact that we were able to go home just a couple hours after the birth to heal in my own space was a huge factor in us choosing Gracefull. I was able to rest in a comfortable environment where they visited to check up on us and administer my rhogam shot. From start to finish, my experience at Gracefull as a first time mom has been wonderful. My husband and I were able to meet all the midwives, even the students, throughout our prenatal visits which reassured us of the caring and knowledgeable hands we were under. They really looked out for me and made sure that if there was even a glimpse of a red flag, in terms of my health, to give me solutions so I could have the birth I planned for. The educational videos and informative visits really gave me a foundation for when I was in labor at home. With this being my first time, I was unsure of what to expect as it related to labor. I was able to put to use what I learned to get me through a very quick labor. I am not sure I would have been able to cope had I not been given tools to apply from Gracefull. I gave birth at the center and wow, what a time! I got to the birthing center at 2:00am and gave birth at 2:30am. The midwives were very efficient with this quick birth. I was so in shock after the delivery of my baby girl because of how fast it went, I was staring at a tub full of water that I never made it to lol. They gave me the freedom to birth how I wanted and it turned out to be a land birth on all fours lol. The next day one of the midwives Michelle, who happens to be one of my absolute favorites, did our postnatal check at home. She was so informative and really helped me cope with my new normal. She came back a few times that week to make sure baby girl was gaining weight as she was born at 5lbs 8oz. Michelle even brought me donor breast milk while I was waiting on my milk to come through. My mom even raves about how much she loves this birthing center and Michelle. Everyone she talks to gets an ear full about MY experience lol. With this being a new experience for my mom, in terms of birth options, she was beyond pleased with the whole experience. I have already recommended this birth center to everyone I know and I will continue as this exceeded my expectations and I couldn't have asked for a better team from start to finish. read more

If I could give these people negative stars I would. We worked with them for months after coming to LA and on the day my wife's water broke, they made us jump through a bunch of hoops instead of helping us with the birth. They even offered and did a membrane sweep after my wife's water was broken. When they did show up for the home birth (the next day) it was after hours of calling and texting to convince them my wife was in active labor. They said they were coming at 8pm, showed up closer to Midnight and when they did, they didn't even have all the equipment they needed. We had to call an ambulance. They tried to tell me the hairy head of my child that I could see in my wife's vagina was not the baby. Them wasting our time very nearly killed both my wife and child. After the child was born she had an infection (most likely from the membrane sweep which should never be done after the water is broken) and had to stay in the NICU for a week to recover. They never apologized or acknowledged their wrongdoing. Didn't even send flowers for a woman they sent to the ER!!! Called us nonstop though till we agreed not to sue, which was all they ever seemed worried about to begin with. All in all, avoid these women like the plague. I wasn't a big believer in midwives before this experience and would have sworn them off entirely if it wasn't for the Dignity Health Midwives that did deliver the baby. These people charged us, and then tried to charge our insurance company wild amounts of money and they didn't even deliver the baby. They will lie to you, cheat you and possibly kill you and your child in the process... read more

I loooooved my experience here at GraceFull! I had a really poor experience with Kaiser at the beginning of the pandemic when I was preggo so switching to a birth center was essential to feeling heard. Right away I clicked with Michelle and then my hubby and I met Heba and Sara who were also AMAZING! We were able to have all three midwives at our birth and even though it was quite the experience to birth unmedicated - they were there getting me through each emotion. The facility (birth center) is soooo clean and cute and calming. I was in the shower laboring a lot and the shower is PERFECTION! They have all of the gadgets to make laboring easier and it helped 100%. I honestly cannot recommend them enough. My post partum care has also been essential. Every time I chat with a midwife they compliment me so genuinely and it makes me feel like a rockstar. Amy came over the day after we birthed and she was sssoooo helpful and shared knowledge about newborns so we could stop freaking out. We used the hotline when needed for me or for baby and they were always right there responding. I absolutely had the best experience and would recommend this place to anyone and everyone who wants to birth unmedicated! I never wanted to have a baby, thanks to how movies and TV portrayed birth. It looked terrible, who would voluntarily put themselves through that?! ...and then I really, really wanted to have a baby. Before getting pregnant, I did my research, and realized I could have a different experience than the norm. GraceFull Birthing really spoke to me, and suddenly I was excited to give birth! The midwives at GraceFull are knowledgable, wise, comforting, and relaxing. There's no fear there. Appointments take as long as they need, and they really work with you as an individual. I have a needle phobia, and they were so kind and understanding, meeting me where I was at and never scaring me. I started to hate weighing myself and once I said something, I never had to weigh myself again. I looked forward to my appointments. My baby's birth was beautiful. I studied HypnoBabies, labored at home with a doula, and I was only at the birth center for two hours before my daughter was born in the tub. It was painless and we never felt scared. That's my husband's big feeling he left with, "I was never afraid. I thought I'd freak out but I just knew it'd be okay." And it was! We were in such good hands. I'm not eager to have another baby just yet, if ever, but I wouldn't hesitate to return to GraceFull. After no call backs and no responses to emails, I finally get communication asking for my insurance information and to schedule a phone call to discuss. My phone call was hours late. I'm then told the price is double then what the "you won't pay more than 4,000" speech was in the meeting prior. I have great insurance, Blue shield Ca. Price was told to me like a warning as if I couldn't afford it! I then requested Christa to send a link for a tour of the facility. Nothing. Fine with me, I'm not chasing after these people. From my very first phone call setting up care through Gracefull, I knew I was in good hands for my second pregnancy. At every appointment, I felt comfortable and listened to. I typically met with Heba or Michelle, who are both really knowledgeable and reassuring, and everyone on the team is incredibly warm and helpful. It's hard to name anyone without listing everyone on the team. When my baby was born at the birth center, the entire experience was incredibly positive. The environment of the birth center rooms is very cozy and feels very tucked away and secluded. It was such a comfortable hideaway, like a little nest where we got to meet and get to know our baby before bringing her home. The follow up care is much more extensive than what I received after my first birth, which was in a hospital. There are more appointments and they aren't rushed. Our Gracefull appointments gave my family some much needed and appreciated support during the lonely months of the pandemic, and I had so many chances to address any questions or concerns I had before and after delivery. This review is looooong overdue. I found GraceFull for my second pregnancy. My 1st was with an OBGYN and a hospital that broke my trust and violated myself and my consent, so needless to say, I was nervous going into a second pregnancy. BUT, I found GraceFull through my insurance (they are a participating in-network birth center with my PPO) and did a consult with them to see if they would be a good fit. And boy were they. They listened to what I had gone through with compassion and empathy, talked over what I was looking for with the next pregnancy and delivery, and were completely supportive. They understood that my trust was not easily given, and they earned it consistently throughout. Covid came at the start of my 3rd trimester, so that threw us a curve, but it made me even more glad to be going with a birth center instead of hospital. I didn't end up with as many pain management options as I was hoping because of contamination concerns (gas & air), but they were so supportive through the difficult delivery, that I ended up giving birth completely unmedicated to a 9+ pound baby and felt like an absolute WARRIOR GODDESS. They came to my house for follow up visits and were completely available any time I had questions or concerns. It was an absolutely healing experience that I will be forever grateful for. My son is now 3, and we continue to send GraceFull Birthing a holiday card every year. They are forever a part of our family. read more

I wanted to say how thankful I am for finally pulling the trigger and having a homebirth and it would not have been possible if I did not choose GraceFull as the place to help me with my final birthing journey. I appreciate all the midwives who helped me through each prenatal visit and answered all my questions. I was so nervous and anxious to have a home water birth although this was my fourth pregnancy it was my first time having a baby without any hospital intervention. GraceFull was there the entire time coaching me through my anxiety..not only that for the first time I went past my due date!! (Talk about really becoming anxious)....Three days after my lil one decided it was time to make her appearance...After 6 hours of active labor she was ready to enter the world. My midwives and her assistants made me feel comfortable and continued to remind me my vagina is magical!! Thanks Amy They were rockstars and after entering the pool during the transition part of labor and three pushes later my husband grabbed our new bundle of joy with the great assistance from our midwife Amy and our daughter was born. The best part was my older daughter's were able to witness every moment and even captured all the video footage for us. It couldn't have went any better. It's so bitter sweet to be done having children I wish GraceFull was there for the other three. I definitely recommend this birthing center. Communication was great. Information and knowledge about home birthing was great!! Even after my six week check up I still feel like I can go to them if I have questions. GraceFull Birthing - Baby girl Nova Lee!! - Midwives Near Me - Los Angeles, California

BEWARE - very deceptive business and insurance practices! Nicole the billing person is an unprofessional fraud and told me my insurance would reimburse close to 100% of my costs for a la carte office visits for partial prenatal care before I moved out of Los Angeles. I signed a financial agreement that states midwife services are in network with my insurance company, and now they're saying that the midwives I saw were out of network and not in contract. This is considered surprise billing / balance billing which I never agreed to and was never disclosed to me, nor did I provide written consent. Surprise billing/balance billing is ILLEGAL in the state of CA, yet they are forcing me to pay the difference of what they couldn't recoup from my insurance since they billed my insurance a higher amount than what my insurance deems the allowable amount. They are an in network provider and are trying to scam me out of what is rightfully due to me as I had overpaid for their services. If you look at their website and their Instagram page highlights under "insurance", or speak directly with Nicole their billing director, you will be led to believe that BCBS is in network. On my phone calls with Nicole that were extensive, she always made reassurances that my insurance would cover my costs at 100% or close to 100%. I was thorough in this call with her before I decided to go with them for care when I already had an OB I'd been seeing for years in LA who I could've gone to and it would not have cost me a single cent. I did not plan on birthing with GraceFull and made this extra clear to them as I knew I was moving across the country and was reassured that I would pay per visit and then they'd submit to insurance to receive my reimbursement. I paid $1,110 out of pocket expecting to recoup most of this cost and they are trying to say they only owe me $281 because that's all my insurance paid them - which is the allowable amount they could bill due to the negotiated rate they have with my insurance- since they are in network I am not responsible for the difference just because they couldn't recoup what they think they should get from my insurance company. When they are in network, that does not mean I have to foot the extra costs - this is balance billing and makes this a surprise bill which is illegal. They also lied to me when I followed up to ask where my check was, and they told me they hadn't received checks from my insurance, and I called my insurance, and they confirmed GraceFull had cashed the check two months ago. They also completely omitted one of my visits for reimbursement to my insurance and were ready to pay me a final amount without even attempting to file a claim for one of my visits - this also made my reimbursement calculations that were due to me lower. If I hadn't asked ab this, they would've conveniently forgotten to file this claim. I prepaid $1,100 out of pocket for in network service and according to my EOB I only owed them $35 after all is said and done. My insurance has confirmed that I am owed all $1,100 (but the $35) and GraceFull refuses to reimburse me for the difference that is owed. They also still haven't transferred notes and records to my current midwife and it's been almost 3 months since I last saw them. Do not trust them with the biggest moment of your life. I'm 7 months pregnant and now have to deal with this stress, and I am pursuing legal action to receive the reimbursement owed to me if my credit card disputes somehow get reversed. I have enough legal documentation to prove that they owe me another $800+. Do not let Nicole's friendly and bubbly demeanor fool you. I'm a good and honest person who sees the good in most people, I unfortunately let her take advantage of me. They even forgot to charge me for a visit, and when I came back for the next visit I asked them if I could settle the payment, if that tells you how honest and transparent I am! Nicole is super deceptive. Never once told me that the midwives were not in network until I pursued full reimbursement of what I had overpaid for. She also won't acknowledge any of this and refuses to call me back. She suggested a call with Elizabeth or herself and I have asked for a call several times and no one has called me. Instead, they pushed me to an external billing contractor who was awful and someone I'd never spoken to prior to this mess. Then they tried to get me on a call with their lawyer, which is totally insane! Don't trust this business. They are deceptive and lack transparency, and if you want to use good insurance you pay for coverage, you will be ripped off with hidden fees that you never agreed to and were not disclosed in the financial agreement. The midwives were sweet but honestly it was pointless for me to see them with such a low risk / easy pregnancy and no plan to birth with them. Just go to an OB if you want checkups, which may be pointless with a low risk pregnancy anyway. read more

******UPDATE***** 4/3/21 Elizabeth is the car salesman of natural birthing. After she was made aware that our child was left in critical condition due to catastrophic mistakes by midwife Michelle Rey (the doctor we transferred to told us that she should NOT have made my wife push for over 10 hours because the baby was in the wrong position!!! She should have easily detected this being a midwife!! She also had my wife push when the contractions grew further and further apart and when I intervened because I felt something was terribly wrong she wiped her hands clean and was done with us like someone in an assembly line and just went thru the motions. Every misstep lead to the decline in our baby's health and by the time he was born he was in critical condition and rushed to NICU. His health continued to decline and put him in the children's hospital. The first month of our baby's life was near fatal in the hospital, excruciating tests and spinal tap, poking and prodding, and constant suffering - all which could have been avoided under the care of a qualified provider. Elizabeth verbally agreed to give us a refund. Then, she tried to get us to sign a settlement agreement to keep us quiet for said refund as if we are uneducated and desperate for money. When we refused, she tried to gaslight us and had zero compassion for our traumatic experience. We turned to Yelp to prevent other pregnant women from experiencing this level of trauma, pain and unnecessary medical complications for their newborn. Then, Elizabeth had her lawyer contact us to offer to pay us off to delete our Yelp reviews!! Disgusting!!! Somehow, she's managed to have my wife's review removed which included copy of the deplorable settlement agreement she tried to get us to sign. We raked in over $75k in medical fees due to negligence at GRACEFULL!!!! LET THAT NUMBER SINK IN FOR THOSE OF YOU CONSIDERING A NATURAL BIRTH HERE!!! Do you have the right insurance as well as thousands and thousands of dollars laying around to save the life of your newborn when Gracefull does not deliver as promised? Elizabeth claims their birthing success rate is 99% - that is a lie. They have WAY more hospital transfers than Elizabeth claims. They lie and say that they will only take 9 births max per month and pressure you to put a deposit in when they will increase the birthings to 12 per month or more - ANYTHING FOR A PROFIT. The midwives are overworked and spread thin. They are forgetful and careless. They will change your records without your consent or confirming with other staff. Elizabeth and Gracefull's staff DO NOT give you better care than the hospital system because Elizabeth just sees a dollar sign on your head. They will try to scam you and take advantage of your insurance company. My wife's yelp review is now missing because Elizabeth knows the truth will shut her shady business down. Elizabeth, if you are reading this - you should be ashamed of yourself for putting lives in danger and committing fraud. We are honest hard working people who only wanted to bring our son safely into this world during a pandemic. You are ruining the reputation of midwifery care. Elizabeth, it's mind blowing that as an owner you will not take accountability for the negligent actions of your staff at Gracefull that left my wife and child in critical condition and almost resulted in death. It's even more shocking that you will say/do whatever you can to deny and cover up the malpractice taking place at Gracefull. You will stop at no end to continue to risk the lives of pregnant women and their unborn children just to make a profit. For you to be so quick to say that my family's traumatic experience is fake is alarming and speaks volumes. Yet, you try to get us to sign a settlement agreement to keep us quiet. We came to graceful at the beginning of our pregnancy in March 2020 with some questions and weren't sure how insurance would would then decided to go with obgyn hospital route at first. But then towards the last trimester we decided on home birth. Sooo glad we went back with Graceful, the transition was smooth and the care was graceful. I would definitely recommend them to anyone and wish I could recommend the midwives to other friends and family in other states. Everyone is professional and really knows birth and what to do in any situation I'm sure. My wife Aria gave birth to our daughter at home in July of 2008, and Elizabeth was our midwife. The whole experience was amazing, and we wouldn't trade it for the world. Initially, we were going to have the baby at UCLA hospital with the midwives there, with Elizabeth as our doula. But as we entered our third trimester there was a dispute between our insurer and the midwives' practice there. We had been thinking more seriously about having the baby at home, and took that as a sign to do so. Elizabeth is a very calm, experienced, knowing presence. We'd been seeing her for months as a doula before she transitioned over to the midwife role with us. On the day of the birth, she created a very serene and comfortable energy within our house, and she continually reassured and empowered my wife with her words. At the same time, Elizabeth really gave us a lot of space and only checked in when necessary. Aria was in active labor for about 6 hours, pushed for 25 minutes, and gave birth to our daughter without any drugs, in a $25 target baby pool in our living room. The birth was such an amazingly intimate, special time for our family. And being able to carry the baby up to our own bed that night was an incredible gift. The only complication during our birth was that my wife had some tearing. Elizabeth addressed it perfectly. Elizabeth followed up with us with 1 day, 1 week, 2 week and 1 month visits, and was an invaluable resource regarding breastfeeding. She was made for this job. read more

My daughter is nearly 9 months old and I'm finally sitting down to write my review for Gracefull Birthing. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this Birth Center. I interviewed them along with Del Mar Birth Center when I was initially looking for a place to have my daughter, and was immediately drawn to Gracefull for it's warm, homey atmosphere and friendly, personable staff. I joined Gracefull a little past the halfway point in my pregnancy, so I enjoyed seeing them for several months worth of prenatal visits and for the birth itself and postpartum visits. I never felt rushed and my midwives, Jennifer and Sarah (who no longer works there) always took the time to ask me how I was doing and go over any question or concerns I had. Having done the traditional OB-GYN for the first half of my pregnancy, this was SUCH a difference than my experiences with my OB (Dr. Christopher Pearson). He always spent about 5 minutes with me and I never felt like I had time to ask all the questions I had. My midwives were always professional, courteous, and knowledgable. I felt very well taken care of. They treat you like a friend rather than a sterile stranger. I love the Gracefull is a one-stop-stop for all your pregnancy-related needs. They have classes, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic care. Everything you'll need during your pregnancy in one location. I used Gracefull's Chiropractic care for the last couple months of my pregnancy, and received the same wonderful care I expect from Gracefull from Brook, the chiropractor there. She helped me deal with some back pain and was so helpful and kind. The birth itself was absolutely wonderful. Since this birth center is small we were the only ones there, and so we were able to labor together (my husband and I) in privacy and tranquility. I labored in their wonderful tub most of the time, which helped melt away the contractions and allowed me to relax into my breathing. Jennifer, who was the midwife who delivered my daughter, along with her assistant, were so calm and reassuring. The birth was absolutely picture prefect and was such a wonderful, memorable experience that I will always treasure. After my daughter was born, GraceFull continued to provide me with wonderful care for my postpartum visits. I was so sad when my last 6 week appointment came and went, and I was finished with my Gracefull experience (for this baby at least!) It was a privilege and truly joyful to give birth with these masterful and talented ladies! I regret it took me this long to write my review, because every woman in LA should know about GraceFull and the type of childbirth that they offer! First of all Elizabeth, Jocelyn and Abigail are incredibly KNOWLEDGEABLE! Every question I had, they had an answer to. They pointed me to the right books, discussions, and perspectives to form a plan with confidence. I loved Ina May's Guide To Childbirth the most. I loved Elizabeth's "Hats and Hormones" class, because it gave my husband and I the right and the courage to create a birth environment that was all about OUR families desires and needs and no one else's. It was the first time I thought about all the pressure we women put on ourselves to please mothers, mother in laws and other family members. Your birth is yours to have and remember so do it your way! The GraceFull midwives are also respectful of your ideas, fears, and birth plan and did everything to honor ours. My husband and I watched television for the first few hours of early labor, had sex, kissed and snuggled and then by the time Elizabeth showed up, my husband was playing songs on the piano while I sang along. When the contractions came I would hang from my pole (which my hubby held) and just breathed through it (in for 4 and out for 8). Elizabeth knew exactly where I was at (progression wise) the whole time and monitored only when it was necessary. She knew right when it would be a good time for me to get in the tub, and that the baby was coming. My other daughter, my husband, and even our family dog got to witness the birth of baby Dakota! We labored mostly alone because that's how we envisioned it, but when I needed Elizabeth and her knowledge, she was right there! Our Dakota was born in the water at 4:13am in September 11th, but if it weren't for Elizabeth, we could have lost our little one. My umbilical chord was only 9 inches, so I birthed the baby's head and she stayed there for a while, bungee jumping. The babies color was nice and I got on all fours to try and dislodge her shoulders, but it was the short umbilical chord and not her shoulders. Elizabeth noticed her color start to change in the water and made a very important decision to pull her out. Because the chord was so short, it was most likely torn or breached in some way, and the baby needed to come out ASAP. She clamped off the baby's chord and mine and we had our baby. Had she not been the incredibly masterful midwife that she is, we could have been in trouble. Had I been in the hospital, I would have had an emergency C-section. In the minutes that followed, our baby's Apgars were better than normal and we were onto stitching mama. I only had a tiny (4 stitch tear), but I appreciate Elizabeth's craftsmanship! I have healed beautifully and have a very symmetrical vagina postpartum. Yay! In the days that followed I had a ton of questions, and the midwives at GraceFull always had an answer that helped me every time. Even though Elizabeth ended up being my midwife on the day of my delivery, Jocelyn, Abigail, and every student/assistant I ever crossed paths with at GraceFull was professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and helpful! I also want to take the time to thank Nicole Lee, Gracefull's financial guru! With her guidance, I filed a complaint with the state against my insurance company, and got LACARE to write a "letter of agreement" that stipulated they would cover ALL of my bill with Gracefull. This is new territory and I just hope that more women have the same opportunity that I had! I am so grateful for these women and our birth experience. Gracefull birthing worked with me and my family for prenatal, delivery and post natal services for my recent pregnancy and birth of my son. We loved working with the Gracefull birthing team, including midwives Dana, Heba, and Carolina, and medical assistant Tayelor. The midwives are very experienced and knowledgeable, and I always felt at ease coming to the Silverlake location for my prenatal and postnatal visits. I also recently had a an annual women's health check up with the center. Even though this is my second child, it was a somewhat difficult birth, because he was posterior and a very large baby almost 9 pounds. Birthing at Gracefull was an amazing experience. The midwives were all beyond wonderful and my birth experience was all I had hoped it would be. It was tough being a pregnant then new mom during COVID and they provided so much support and encouragement. They were supportive of my choices and preferences and also provided suggestions and helpful insights at each turn. During labor and delivery, Michelle and Dorian were absolutely amazing. They were patient and helpful, guiding my husband on how to best support and help me. They both have a ton of experience in their roles so I felt comfortable trusting their suggestions and guidance. Postpartum care was excellent and when I hit bumps along the recovery road they were very responsive and took extra steps to make sure I had everything I needed. **PSA The two midwives Heba and Michelle are and have been wonderful.** HOWEVER, this place is an absolute disgrace. The administration, if you can call it that, is the shadiest operation I have ever seen. Long story short - I had to go from my private insurance to medi-cal after being laid off from my job. The administrators (Elizabeth - owner and Nicole is put on the front lines to deal with insurance) told me that I could still have my pregnancy covered through medi-cal I just had to get a referral from my OBGYN. My original OBGYN said no and that was fine so then I asked the administrators at Gracefull what OBGYN's have written referrals for medi-cal patients in the past and they gave me the names of three doctors. Those doctors are Dr. Joslyn Gumbs, Dr. Roy Silver, or Dr. Norman Sorcita. Dr. Gumbs was the only one who was taking on new patients. So after all of our medical-cal information went through in mid November, it took an additional 3 weeks to get in with Dr. Gumbs as she is highly requested. We finally get in on Decemb er 21st, and when I ask for the referral to Gracefull Dr. Gumbs says and I quote "I have never heard of that place, how do they know me and why would they use my name?" Yes, that is what she said to my face. And I said "but they used you in the past" and she shook her head no. She told me she would write the referral but it would be blocked as I am not a patient of hers. She wrote it and like she predicted, it was blocked. Fast forward I let Gracefull know what happened and they made no attempts to cover up their lies so of course I want to remove myself from their care. Three months they strung me along knowing I wouldn't be able to be insured. As soon as I told them I wanted to relieve myself from their care, they all of a sudden needed to reschedule my appointment (how convenient). Then they said I need to pay my remaining balance and I said you will get your money, when I get my final appointment. And wouldn't you know it? The heavens open up and a spot frees up earlier than the appointment they rescheduled me for (isn't it amazing how life works?). So, I have my final appointment January 3rd and once again the midwife Michelle was helpful and kind. Then we ask her will services still be available to us on the my.maternityneighborhood website and she said yes all of you records will be there and will be archived and you will have access to them. Lo and behold as of today, January 8th I am locked out of my account and can't access the records they are supposed to forward to my new Dr., Dr. Gumbs. Expectant parents, DO NOT GO HERE! ****Updated Edit**** Gracefull got Google to remove my review and my husbands review of their business. I have been considering writing a review for quite some time, since giving birth in August 2016, but I haven't found the right words to do so. There are so many things I'd like to say, but I will keep it simple - as I'm done fighting with Gracefull and my own self over the events that happened during my labor. I felt that when coming forward to speak to Gracefull (Elizabeth), my husband and I were treated as if we were wrong - that our feelings were not valid. She kept trying to explain Jocelyn's behavior, but never took responsibility for how it affected us. This was a lesson for them, but at our expense. If this happens to you, know that they will pretend to care and then you will realize that they have not listened at all. Ultimately, I had a traumatic experience during my home birth, with Jocelyn as my midwife. I felt that I was treated unkindly, and as if Jocelyn was resentful for being present during an extremely personal, intimate and vulnerable time for me. Her presence created a huge negative atmosphere in my home, leaving me feeling weak and incapable. On a positive note : I had always wanted a home birth. I wanted the grueling, intense awakening that seemed so natural to me - a womanly rite of passage. I wanted my baby to be welcomed into the world in a warm home, surrounded my caring, strong women. My husband and I met with a few midwives, but once we met Jennifer, we knew right away that Gracefull was the choice for us. She had a gentle, but incredibly strong, intuitive, mothering nature and I knew she was the type of care I yearned for and needed. I felt that throughout my pregnancy, Jennifer continued to be in tune with my needs - she's full of experience and such a bright light. The birthing center is also incredibly beautiful, full of vibrant, warm energy - I felt like this is where I wanted to be for my appointments on the journey to meet my baby. If you're reading this, with a glowing baby inside of you, I really hope you get the birth you imagined. Trust your instincts here - I wish I'd honed in on the fact that I was unsure of how I felt about Jocelyn's care during my pregnancy, but I just overall trusted Gracefull. I will hold grief with myself for quite a long time for not requesting Jennifer for my birth. I am left overwhelmed and deeply saddened from my birth experience and Gracefull's cold response. Delivered a healthy baby boy at 40w + 2 at Gracefull on 8-22-19! Switching from a hospital/OB to Gracefull and their amazing team (Faith, Sherrie, and all the student midwives) was the best thing I did for my first-time pregnancy and labor. I loved the sense of community, and the midwife-led appointments, which allowed questions to unfold while they went through a checklist of things to review and remind me of based on how far along I was in my pregnancy. I loved how personalized my care was and how much of an emphasis was placed on nutrition, exercise, and general wellbeing rather than medication, or declaring me high-risk and in need of induction and intervention. I loved how the entire experience wasn't fear-based. That was probably the most important part to me. I felt well taken care of, yet they never made me feel scared. I delivered my son in one of the beautiful birthing rooms at Gracefull, surrounded by amazing women who encouraged me all the way through. It's going to be weird not visiting Gracefull on a regular basis for appointments, I've become so attached to everyone there! Luckily, they are available to me for 6 weeks post-partum (something I hadn't even realized) and being able to text Faith and Sherrie with any questions has been wonderful. From a financial perspective, I loved that I knew the full cost up front, and was no longer anticipating bills from my insurance after every appointment. Nicole was incredibly helpful in explaining the cost (plus what my insurance may cover) and helped us prepare for every eventuality. Also! The free classes are amazing!! My deepest thanks to everyone at Gracefull. You helped me maintain a healthy and happy pregnancy, which allowed my birth to unfold exactly as I wanted it to be. This review is coming a year after I birthed my daughter in GraceFull's tub and the memory is still as magical as the experience itself. For context: I had my first child at Good Sam, under the care of an OB. With the help of an awesome doula (shout out to Carmen!), I had a relatively smooth, unmedicated labor/birth. Nothing terrible to report there. It still pales in comparison to the experience I had at GraceFull... I came to GraceFull in my third-tri, having been under the care of another OB serving Glendale Adventist. Best. Decision. Ever. The search for a midwife felt like speed dating. You may find a qualified midwife, with all the right knowledge and experience, but it's the chemistry that often becomes the deciding factor. As soon as I met Sarah (and later Elizabeth), I knew that I was in the right care. I could seriously write a novel about my experience, so PM me if you want more details. Otherwise, here are some pluses I experienced: + in contrast to the rushed 5-10min I had with my OB, I would easily spend an hour with these ladies during my pre-natal visits. (instead of waiting close to an hour for my OB); scheduling was always a breeze and there was little to no wait. + the insurance biller they used at the time (different now, I believe) was able to get a huge chunk of it covered. (Major bonus, but it still would have been worth every penny if it were fully out-of-pocket) + that TUB! I was hoping to be able to use all the cool gear and contraptions they have to assist with labor, but I may have labored a little too long at home and headed straight into that lovely tub after they took my vitals. There I stayed with hubby for a little over an hour when baby came out. (Also birthed the placenta in tub.) + the lighting. I know some people will think this is a ridiculous detail, but I'm sensitive to lighting and generally can't stand flourescents. The dark, cave-like environment is *exactly* where I wanted to be in the depths of labor. During transition, they came shuffling in like little fairies with headlamps on. If it had turned into institutional flourescent overhead lighting at that point, I'm pretty sure my body would have closed up. + I actually felt empowered through the whole experience. My doula with the first hospital birth was awesome, but she directed me like a puppet at some point (...esp when i was in transition, waiting for OB to arrive...) With the second, here at GraceFull, I felt all the support and encouragement to listen to my body and really direct myself on what I needed to do. Their expertise, intuition, and careful attention, coupled with the safe space they've created in the birthing rooms, enabled me to do so. + Post-partum visit. The post-partum visit at my home the day after the birth was so special. Not just to ensure all is well physically, but to also be there to help reflect on and assimilate what. just. happened. In short (haha), if you're pregnant and considering these midwives, spare yourself the time in reading more reviews and just go meet them. You'll get to see their operation, have any remaining questions answered and see if their personalities fit with yours. Also perhaps of interest, I endured hyperemesis gravidarum for most of my pregnancy. I absolutely love Gracefull Birthing. The owner, Elizabeth Bachner was recommended to me by another midwife. I had an easy time scheduling my first appointment. They do take insurance and gave me a great deal of explanation up front about what portions of the cost my insurance would cover. I had an easy time connecting with the midwives and all of the staff; they are all very down to Earth and caring. They are basically available 24/7 via phone, which is beyond comforting. I love the location and have had an easy time with parking. Their hours are convenient and they sell very holistic and useful products. I ended up having a miscarriage and they were completely supportive in helping me find an OB to visit after I requested a referral. Kara talked and texted me through the two weeks during and after my loss. It was like having a good friend to rely on rather than having to go through an office. Since then, I've continued to visit GraceFull for acupuncture visits and am looking forward to my next pregnancy so that I can start seeing the midwives again. read more

Elizabeth builds her care on trust and she earns that trust by treating expectant mothers with respect while offering her friendship. She individualizes her care and cares for the whole being of the person. Our trust in her allowed us to have confidence in the birthing process and confidence as parents. Elizabeth also exudes a contagious sense of peace and that comes in real handy, especially in a birth! She also is a great resource for excellent referrals, such as Dr. Kline and Bini Birth. Bottom line - Elizabeth has a gift for midwifery and it definitely is evident throughout her entire care. A side note: insurance billing was a breeze. Elizabeth supported us as we chose to bill our insurance company directly rather than creating a superbill. Long story short, we were able to get more than 83% back! A random side note: You won't find a cooler midwife than Elizabeth. She has a great sense of humor and has great taste in music. AND an awesome bumper sticker. =) read more

I started researching out of hospital births several years ago and I thought, "This all sounds great but how do I make this happen?". With GraceFull Birthing, my vision of an empowered birth experience became a reality. What I appreciate so much from this team is how knowledgeable they are and how the midwives will never tell you what you should do; rather, they present you with thorough information so that you can make informed choices that are right for your family. Midwives Elizabeth and Sarah (along with the student midwives) are incredibly respectful and compassionate and I never once felt uncomfortable or unsupported in their care. Let me emphasize the RESPECT factor. As a woman who was about to embark on the life changing experience of childbirth and motherhood, I appreciated the things (big and small) that the midwives would do such as asking my permission for EVERYTHING and even saying hello to my baby before putting their hands on my belly. GraceFull Birthing also fully respected my husband and always made sure to include him in the conversation and address any concerns he'd have at each appointment. GraceFull understands that the partners need support as well. GraceFull is very plugged in with the different birthing resources available in the area and has a wonderful chiropractor and acupuncturist on staff (acupuncturist Mechelle gave me a treatment while I was in active labor -- she is amazing). They also offer a whole bunch of classes and I definitely recommend the Unmedicated Birthing class for mothers (and partners!) preparing for an unmedicated birth. Even though I thought I knew everything about unmedicated births, I still learned so much and the class helped engage my husband as well and give him realistic expectations of what birthing looks like. It has been 16 weeks since my son Lucca was born, many days and many nights are hazy in my mind, but many many vivid moments we have built so far. He is thriving and reaching milestones quite smoothly, yet it just seems like it was yesterday morning at 4 am when we arrived home from Gracefull. Prior to Gracefull i had an interesting (to say it briefly) experience with the huge amount of red tape health insurance and providers have, that had me missing my whole second trimester of prenatal care. Labeled "High Risk" due to my age, i felt i was getting closer to an unnecessary C- Section and/or other procedures not quite needed. I reached out to a birthing center in Pasadena, We toured their facility and met the staff, everything was going well until they realized i had not had prenatal care for three months, so they rejected me after a couple of weeks of considering me. I was devastated by their decision as my hopes of not having to go to the hospital had been growing as well as my sense of power to deliver unmedicated. they referred me to GRACEFULL Birth Center. Feeling defeated and skeptical I called Gracefull, they promptly set up an appointment to tour the center. From the minute my husband and I stepped in we felt the amazing positives vibes. We were welcomed and treated so nice, despite our humble looks. I loved Jocelyn from that first meeting, as she made me believe again in my inner power and treated my age as number not a disease. She discuss pricing and never made us feel like we couldn't afford or didn't deserve this experience. We signed up as soon as we could and I was under Jocelyn's care during my third trimester. We couldn't stop talking about our first appointment and how it had lasted an hour where things were explained throughly and i was treated like a person, not a quota to fill (that's how my OB-GYN used to make me feel with 5 minute, $30 appointment). She worked with me and my glucose levels, and answer even questions i thought were silly to ask. Lucca was born two weeks earlier than expected, I remember when i first realized it wasn't a stomach ache but rather contractions, I called Jocelyn at 7am on a Sunday to explain what i was feeling, she was so re-assuring, calm and available. She guided me over the phone a couple of times during the 30+ hours of contractions and never made me feel like all these new things i was experiencing were not worth explaining. When i enter into active labor we drove to Gracefull, thank God it was a holiday, i couldn't imagine having contractions in the middle of Sunset Blvd at peek hour. I still giggled remembering how they thought i was still too composed to be in active labor, i was very chatty and polite. I had 7cm of dilation. Elizabeth came in to check up on me and to remind me to trust my body and surrender into the experience. My labor continue for a few more hours with the help and encouragement of Jocelyn, Johanna and my husband. Finally at 11:22 our son was born into my husband's hands, the joy on my husband's face is something i won't forget, the sensation of having skin to skin contact with my son almost immediately is indescribable. Having people respecting basic wishes is priceless. I talked about my experience over and over with close friends and family. Jocelyn and Johanna were the perfect duo to deliver our son they were so genuinely happy, you'll think is just another day for them but they were so in it with us, something you can't fake. Well we are for now enjoying our son, but when our time to have another baby comes will definitely reach out to Gracefull again. We'll continue to share our amazing experience and recommending the birth center. The best decision we made was choosing midwifery care at GraceFull. My mama instincts told me this is what was right for me and my baby. During every prenatal visit, our midwives Jocelyn and Jennifer took the time to sit with my husband (Parker) and me to answer questions and counsel us on our concerns, anxieties and share in our excitement. Jocelyn was great at presenting a lot of evidence based research as we considered our birthing plan options. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my third trimester and our midwives did a wonderful job linking me with supportive resources and guiding me through the challenges that this presented for me. GraceFull offers so many great classes and I strongly recommend the childbirth education class with Elizabeth and JJ. It's worth all the time we invested and it definitely helped us when labor began. Jocelyn was our midwife for our baby Fiona's birth and I felt safe and secure at the birthing center with her. The room had a beautiful ambiance and energy within. Jocelyn kept me motivated and empowered through what I considered a challenging labor. Jocelyn remained calm, confident and in control of everything. My husband appreciated her expertise and reassurance as he focused giving me the support I needed. She sent us home with the knowledge we needed to bring Fiona home within a few hours after her birth. Jocelyn checked in on us every few hours and came to our house the next day for a follow-up visit. Anytime we had a question she was available to us. Our postnatal visits with Jocelyn and Jennifer were also important to reflect on our birth story and our adjustment to being parents. I had the most wonderful experience with Gracefull! If you are (like I was) looking for an alternative to traditional pregnancy/birth in Los Angeles, this is it. I had the most amazing pregnancy and birth experience thanks to the stellar staff at Gracefull. I met all the midwives on staff through my prenatal appointments. They have a holistic approach to pregnancy, making sure everything is going well at every level - nutritional, mental, emotional, spiritual. The birthing center is an incredible space that is beautifully organized and vibrates peace and serenity. The opposite of going to a medical appointment! I had the birth experience I dreamed of, which every parent deserves! And that is all thanks to the owner Elizabeth and her effort to create a safe space for parents to go through this life changing experience while also creating a beautiful community. If you are still hesitant, go there, meet the staff, feel the vibe, talk to their clients. I also highly recommend taking classes there to expand your community of like-minded parents. Thanks to Gracefull's birthing class, I was able to welcome new friendships into my life with women who are now part of my close circle. I can't say enough good things about my experience at GraceFull. The owner, Elizabeth, is such a ball of light in this world. I had most of my prenatal care at Gracefull and I always felt taken care of and listened to. Not only did the midwives care about me and my baby physically, but they also cared about my emotional state. And my baby was 2 weeks late so there were a LOT of emotions at the end there! My labor took a LONG time and yet I never felt rushed or that the midwives were getting impatient. They really made sure my birth experience went as smoothly as possible. Jocelyn came to my home the day after Lily's birth to do the newborn screening and check on us both and they were also such a support if we had any questions those first few days. There are also classes available at the birth center that I HIGHLY recommend. I took a few of them in preparation for my daughter to be born and I learned important information at them all! If I am still in the area for my next child (whenever that might be!) I will, without question, be back at GraceFull. read more
