The downsides were: Demanding a swipe of your credit card before signing in even though my company pays. This is a pet hate of mine. The food, although very pretty, was expensive and tiny in the restaurant if you need to walk anywhere, which I did, there are no footpaths outside the hotel leading to the nearest major road. I had to walk in the road or on the wet grass, neither very satisfactory will dragging a wheelie case. The remote for the telly didn't turn it on, just off. The wifi in the room was almost non existent. Other than that fine :-)

Up on the hill some of the beech trees are a few hundred years old and their trunks are at least 8ft in diameter. The valley majestically curves around and follows the river, running down through the sleepy villages of Cross Keys and Risca. The cherry on the cake is the idyllic 12th Century whitewashed stone chapel just before you get to the Center. This is a great place for a walk. Keep your eyes peeled for the fossils in the mud-stone, these are 100 million year old trees and bushes. The views on the top of Machen ridge are stunning, they look over the Severn Estuary, Steep Holm and Flat Holme island. The Center itself runs outdoor activities for schools and youth groups. The staff are fantastically friendly and approachable. The activities include mountain biking, gorge walking, canoeing, hill walking, surfing, archery, bush-craft, orienteering, there's even a small on-site climbing and abseiling wall.

It seats about 100, and can be hired for all sorts of events: weddings, team-building, dinners. It's sometimes booked to host musical performances as well. See the website for pictures and more info about bookings. I attended a wedding reception here and it was well-suited for that: some semi-formalities took place, followed by a dinner and a dance. The Barn provided a fun, rustic location and staff guided all the necessary changes. (Side note: The wedding was for a friend who manages musical acts, including some '80s pop stars. Our musical entertainment included synth-pop hit-maker Howard Jones and Kajagoogoo bass player Nick Beggs! I can't promise they'll show up for your event.) It is remote, though, and if people are drinking some planning needs to take place to ensure taxis from Abergavenny are booked to show up at the end of the night.

But keeping fit and healthy isn't its only purpose, for one or two nights a month at least, when it becomes a nicely-sized 2000-capacity music venue. The gigs may be fairly sporadic, but the quantity is generally compensated by the quality, having welcomed a lengthy list of top rock, indie and pop bands over the years, including many of Wales's finest and most famous contemporary names (Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Feeder, Goldie Lookin Chain). It also doubles as a base for functions, exhibitions, parties and business events. Like nearby theatre The Riverfront, parking isn't always entirely straightforward, but the close proximity of both Newport's central train and rail stations makes either public transport option a fairly painless alternative.

Surrounded by breathtaking views of Welsh countryside, it's is an amazing venue for everything from private parties to corporate hospitality events. The reception room and bar comfortably accommodated the 68 wedding guests in attendance, creating a perfect atmosphere for an intimate and relaxed gathering. The outdoor deck area boasts stunning views of the lake and surrounding forest, with ample seating and a freestanding fire contraption to keep guests warm on a cold evening. Word of advice: don't bother entering the post code into the Sat Nav, you won't find it. My boyfriend and I had to stop and ask a few locals for directions, so allocate extra time if you need to be punctual. Even local taxi drivers are unreliable, as I found after speaking to a few wedding guests (it took 50 minutes to get 0.7 of a mile at 2 pm on Saturday because he too had no idea how to get here). A sufficient amount of parking is available - just watch those stilettos on the gravel-lain ground!

It's full of natural wildlife and the lake is stocked with both brown and rainbow trout, and is popular with both beginners and keen fishing enthusiasts. Brown trout have to be released back into the lake. The average fish size is two and a half pounds, but fish up to ten pounds have been caught. Some say it has a link with King Arthur's Britain. Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote his 'History of the Kings of Britain' around 1140, and this became the main source of all the later Arthurian legends - including the one which claims King Arthur held court at Caerleon for several years. Years after the Roman legion left, Caerleon would have been regarded as one of the wonders of Britain, with the amphitheatre representing a very impressive ruin - and some theorists have even said the remains could be a prototype Round Table. Nowadays, the amphitheatre is occasionally used for open air events and re-enactments.
