Being 86 this year, living alone with a bum foot from a previous severe case of shingles, she took a bad fall in June '16. Resulting in a fracture left humous (above the elbow). The tough old bird endured 4 days in the hospital and corrective surgery. Now with 2 limbs down, she (& the family) were faced with recovery care. Upon being discharged from the hospital she was placed in a recovery unit in West Hartford due to a lack of availability elsewhere. This facility at best was a nightmare. The family quickly jumped on board and found an opening at Caleb Hitchcock Health Care Center, 2 days later. Oh my! What a difference. Caleb was quickly coined, The Country Club for Care. The facility is up-to-date, well managed, and not lacking any amenities for elderly post-operative rehabilitation; Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT). Private rooms with bathrooms and a home like appeal. The public areas are designed to allow residents plenty of activities at every level of mobile ability and skill level. PT & OT were conveniently located in each unit and very well equipped. The staff warm, skilled, and open to any needs of the resident. Believe me, my Mutter-Schwiegersohn had plenty of unique needs and requests while there. Some very challenging, while others very humorous, but the staff (& family) never failed to meet her needs. After weeks of rehabilitation and most importantly occupational therapy, Oma successfully graduated her care. She was discharged this past week (Sept. '16), but not without Caleb follow-up and home evaluation. She came home with a walking device and other home modification were made for her to remain as safe as possible. Fingers crossed. This Community has recently provided us with two special and personal experiences. First, my mother-in-law enjoyed and when I say enjoyed, this is very understated, a recovery period in their on-site Caleb Hitchcock Health Center. This was followed by a bad fall in her own home, which required surgery and two+ months of ambulatory therapy. Second, our daughter was offered and accepted a position with the Community. I was able to spend two and half hours one evening during an earlier snow fall to "safely Uber" my daughter home after her shift. While there I was able to stroll and observe the Community first hand. In that time, I chatted with the most wonderful residents, diverse, each within their own level of life and ability. However ALL appeared happy and with a most impressive sense of close community and caring for one and other. My favorite component is the Aquatic Center. Top notch with scheduled low impact exercise classes, monitored open swim lanes, and a gradual ramp for aided aqua therapy. Not to put aside their adjacent Health and Wellness Center with fitness and movement classes for all. The dining facilities are NOT run of the mill either. Ranging for Casual formal dining, private spaces for residents to dine with visitors, and even door service. The menu was quite impressive offering a new menu everyday catering to all dietary needs and wellness, too. Now, entertainment. I happened upon an open auditorium with a large number of residents enjoying a live Piano, Violin, and Cello performance. I stood in the doorway mesmerized leaving the snowstorm behind. From there I wondered into their Library with an ample and diverse section of book stacks, warm well lit seating areas, and during the day a Librarian. In warmer, months the grounds are park like, the landscaping is beautiful and offers a number of pathways with spaces sit, enjoy nature, and let a little Vitamin D seep in. I'm only scratching the surface and I could go on, however, I close with this: I hope to be as fortunate one day as the Duncaster Residents to partake in such a well planned, maintained, and caring Community to help extend the enjoyment of our sunset.

After getting the prescription for physical therapy at UConn, I spent a bit of time trying to find a place that would be able to take me for physical therapy quickly. I called around and finally was told by a receptionist at another HHRN location that the Bloomfield location relatively less busy, so I gave them a call, and they had an opening a week out. Whew. After the first visit, it was easy to schedule convenient sessions. I ultimately had six sessions with Brian over the course of 3 weeks. Brian has a pretty chill demeanor and was helpful in my understanding of why I was feeling the discomfort I did. I appreciated that deeper understanding and ultimately felt better - mentally and physically - through my sessions here. I was ultimately able to complete my race practically pain free, and it would not have been possible without Brian's instruction and expertise.

In the Davis Unit, they play cheerful music, and Kathleen who plays the game activities with the residents is excellant with them!! Most of the staff I've met on multiple occassions are very helpful. The attitude of one on 10/21/17 whose first name begins with an E was not cool when I asked her to get assistance to transfer the resident I was visiting from her wheelchair to the sofa... A distance of less than two feet. Her response to me was she walked away as she was mumbling something . During that time Kathleen came and I asked her if she would assist and she said yes but she needed assistance from another. At that point no one else was around so Kathleen worked with the resident to transfer her from the wheelchair to the loveseat. Less than 1 minute and done! During this time the employee whose name begins with an E walked through with another resident and said to Kathleen (referring to the resident I was with), "she is only going to want to go back into the wheel chair in a couple of minutes so I don't bother with transferring her." Not the correct attitude. I've worked a couple of decades with the elderly, and others who do so must know if you live long enough to reach their age and beyond, your latter years will be sweeter because of how you treat others now. Sow now what you want to reap later.

This cozy studio off Farmington Ave. has everything you need for a great workout. This class was my first time doing pilates with the reformer machine, and Mary was sure to explain everything and help us perfect our form. She was so calming and knowledgeable; you can tell she is passionate about her job and her clients. The workout was much more difficult than I thought it would be-in a good way! Of course Mary makes all the moves look so easy, but I could definitely feel it in my legs and thighs the next morning. Even through a short, introductory session, I could see how regularly attending classes like this would help get that toned look. Drop-ins are $35, but there is a 3 for $20 deal going on now. Mary is also Barre certified, so I am looking forward to trying one of those classes, too!

As a result of being a former & current athlete I have had more than my share of injuries (my ankle has been reconstructed twice), my cranial spine is a mess from surviving being rear-ended while stopped at red traffic lights twice, and 4 years ago a black ice fall left me still recovering from a TBI... as a result I've worked with several physical therapists from all over the Farmington Valley and West Hartford. I had two other PTs that were of this high caliber, but I truly feel like I hit the jackpot when I started seeing Jen last year (she's even better than they were)! It's true, Jen is one of 3 specialists I work with to try to heal my vision and upper spine issues. But since adding her to my team I was able to give up the biannual nerve blocks to my greater & lessor occipital nerves I've been getting for at least 10 years. I was due in September (it's January 2023 now), and I haven't had to use my neck brace at-all. I've also been able to reduce my pain medication use significantly. I *never* thought my neck would improve, but it has (thanks too in part to Dr Mike Koster of Koster Family Chiropractic in Avon, and Alanna Heaney of Inner Balance & Wellness in Bloomfield working with Jen; these 3 make an incredible team)! Jen is super nice and professional, utilizes many different office tools and always knows the right exercises and stretches to help. She starts by massaging/pressing out some of my most painful knots (it's the best part of my week! Lol); it hurts while feeling good, just like touching a bruise. Jen always uses the right amount of pressure every time. After that I'm loose enough for whatever she has in store for me next. We just re-started dry needling.. while it's not my favorite thing, it's incredible how well it breaks up those deep knots we've all had for years! Earlier in our professional relationship I was a good candidate for a planters fasciitis surgery, but Jen found I had a big knot deep in the sole of my foot (why didn't the podiatry specialist see it on the X-ray?). Thankfully she was successful is healing my foot! My 4-5 mile daily walks are so much more enjoyable now! If you read this Jen, I think about how grateful I am almost every walk. Jen has helped me with balance and core strength too. The exercises she's teaches me, enable me to help myself during the week when I'm on my own. Everyone who works at PTSMC is extremely nice, and they all work so well together. I'll take some pictures the next time I'm there!

Today I ordered salmon at a mother's day luncheon at a nursing home in Simsbury. Guess which salmon was a zillion times better than the other? The salmon at McLean's knocked the Ken's salmon out of the park. It was moist and tender. Ken's was overcooked to the point of dried out brittleness. I think it's very nice that McLean's can provide a high quality lunch for relatives of it's clients on special days such as Mothers Day. It cost just $14 and included Chardonnay or sparkling grape juice, a choice of salmon or chicken florentine with a mix and match choice of rice, stuffed baked potato, carrots and asparagus. Oh, and strawberry cheesecake and coffee.. Hats off to the food service folks and servers at McLean's who proved to me that eating institutionalized food doesn't have to be a terrible experience. They did a real nice job of providing lunch for about 75 people and made Mother's Day a little bit nicer for their clients and their families.
