The receipt of what we ordered.
Ahmed S.

More like Slow Burger Kitchen?! No one came to clean the tables, we cleaned it ourselves, we ordered at 17:33 and the order was late by 30 minutes, we complained and the reply was "I can refund you, the order just came to us". All people came after us was actually served but not us. another 15 minutes passed and we asked again, found out that they didn't actually start our order until we complained the first time. The order came after 1 hour and 10 minutes. I am so angry at the staff and their way of dealing with the situation, they didn't even apologize. I didn't get to picture the food as I was so frustrated by that moment. The burger was tasty but not exceptional. The fires was ok.

I've avoided Gourmet Burger Kitchen ever since they changed their mobile app over, which has made it impossible for me to log-in on multiple devices, even after creating a new account too, meaning they've basically said Goodbye to their loyalty scheme but after a bad experience at Zizzi nearby, I decided to call in here to get some lunch. I ordered a Gluten-Free American cheeseburger, only to be told after making my way back to the table after ordering and paying at the counter (I was told I had to order at the counter, even though this would have violated government legislation due to having an allergy), that they didn't have any gluten-free buns... this made me rather upset as I had given them notice I was ordering gluten-free by requesting the menu and being told they had them... only to be told No after paying. I already couldn't have the chips as they're fried in the same oil as gluten-containing ingredients, which I feel is stupid as it makes fries which were gluten-free to become a coeliac's worst nightmare. I opted for the option for it to be served in a bowl with slaw instead, and I rather wish I didn't, the burger was deconstructed and tasted awful, the slaw was hard and inedible and it had no wetness to it, while the burger was a mess. Despite asking for medium-well, one half of my burger was charcoal and the other was undercooked, it felt like they'd cooked it medium on one side, and well-done on the other... maybe they need to learn what medium-well actually means. My vanilla milkshake was the only thing I enjoyed, but as they now serve it with paper-straws, it was so difficult to drink, it's a shame they've ditched plastic straws, I get they want to be more environmentally friendly but surely bamboo would have been a better option, which is an awesome sustainable material and doesn't go soggy or make the beverage hard to drink, which is offered at Joe and the Juice inside John Lewis. I've had many burgers from here which have been poor to OK, which is a shame too, sadly my experience here from having poor quality food and only being told they had no gluten-free buns after paying really is the final nail in the coffin and I've run out of patience to give GBK more chances. 1*

The best thing about Gourmet Burger is not the burgers but it's location along the Liverpool 1 terrace overlooking Chavasse Park. That's not to say that the burgers here are not good, they are but they're just, well, burgers! Burgers have moved on from the greasey flat pattis from vans outside clubs and MacDonald's was your only option from somewhere with a clean griddle as they are now the 'gourmet' culinery food of choice. Every restaurant now seems to offer their own homemade version, taking advantage of our taste for organic, cornbred, freerange meats. Gournet Burger is, for me not that unique. The burgers are similar in choice and quality to many other places some of which will inlcude fries or chunky chips in the price of their burger. Good quality but nothing exciting.

I have to agree with Anthony on this one. Whilst Gourmet Burger Kitchen is set in an attractive location on Liverpool One's restaurant terrace, their burgers are nothing special and definitely over priced. It cost me £6.35 for a 6oz classic burger which consisted of a lean beef burger in a sesame bun filled with a few salad leaves. No doubt, it tasted fine but not the best burger I've ate in town. I felt the bun could have been thicker and it wasn't the best of quality either (a little crumbly). Everything else looked and tasted fresh though, plus the service was friendly. One thing to note, is that they automatically charge you for a large burger if you don't mention you want small, which is a little cheeky. Remember, chips aren't included either and you would have to pay an extra £3 for a portion. In terms of value for money, you're best heading off to Burger King; you'll save pounds and end up with a fuller stomach!

A very good wine bar nonetheless, and pleasant enough when it's not too busy, Schmooze was one of the first upmarket places to spring up in the area. Now somewhere to be seen, it started off being a very cool but laid back place where students wouldn't feel awkward going into. Now I doubt you would find a pair of jeans in there, unless they were designer ones moulded on to the body of one of these tight t shirt-wearing troglodytes who skulks about these places. Don't get me wrong, it is no reflection of the place itself, it just seems to attract these wannabes. As I said, it is a very accomplished wine bar and the snacky food I've had here can't be faulted. Unfortunately, the clientele here spoil the atmosphere for me a bit, although they are not as bad as some other places in Allerton. Generally, it is a nice, moderately priced place to chill out in, but I wouldn't spend more than an hour here.

Inside Schmooze doesn't disappoint, with room to move around, when it isn't busy, with an up and downstairs. I am unable to comment on the wine, but I have heard that they know their wines. In terms of the food, it was tasty - stuffed mushrooms with gruyere cheese and apple and pear pancake. Depending on how much you want to eat, Schmooze is very accommodating. You can have a main course meal as a starter or vice versa as they list every dish on the menu as either a baby or fat dish. Prices were a little more than I like to pay but I would have been disappointed had I had to eat something totally disguisting. As I hadn't I was happy to smile enjoy the food.

The place itself is bland as hell, nothing interesting or inspiring about the look of the place and this is probably because it doesn't really know what it wants to be. A bistro with tapas? Tapas just seems to be the default setting of any restaurant keen to make a quick buck. The thing that got me however was the service. It was slow, the bartender/waiter was in no rush to put my order through - he apologised later but I think he completely forgot to tell the chef!

Its claim to be a wine bar AND bistro though is something that has never sat well with me. As a restaurant, it is very successful, and boasts breakfast, lunch and evening menus in addition to a tapas menu. The food is lovely and reasonably priced, and the service is good - everything you'd expect from a small restaurant. However, on a busy night, Mello occasionally falls a little short. Staff are torn between serving behind the bar or serving the food, and if there are large parties eating in the 'bistro area' and drinking in the bar area, it can become crowded and sometimes uncomfortable, with the local drunk perving down the top of the local Tesco's manager who's trying to enjoy a staff party. All this aside, it is a pleasant venue, with varied music, patrons and food. Somewhere to go for a quiet lunch or mid-afternoon snack, or a good old knees-up and spy-on-the-locals type night!

Here is the place you come not only to sup the delicious nectar, but also learn all about it. Yes, it's a venue of education as well as fun. The best combination for Monica-esque nerds like myself. You'll be taught a lot but it won't be in a pretentious or patronising way; rather a way that feels useful as well as interesting. The wine is obviously the star of the show, but what would a star be without a supporting cast? Nibbles are just as tasty, with some great board appetisers for groups such as cheese, meat, breads, deli snacks, olives, tomatoes, the works - everything you could think of to perfectly complement a lovely glass. But if there's a person in your party that isn't too keen on the humble grape, the range of unusual beers could be just the thing to tempt them. The wine tasting sessions are legendary, the music is just right, the staff are friendly and informative and it's a great place to bring a group of friends, business clients or even a romantic partner as the atmosphere can suit both a fun, giggly outing or an intimate date. It also doubles up as a wine cellar so you can purchase some tasty gifts to take home. Now these are the kinds of souvenirs that I can get on board with.
