My daughters flute was damaged. It was my old flute, so who knows how long it's been damaged, but her elementary school music teacher noticed; and we had to have it repaired. I was immediately greeted, and actually pleasantly surprised to see people wearing masks (in Clovis). There were about 3 workers and they were all helping and assisting people. Its a pretty small shop, so I appreciated that they seemed to genuinely care and have conversations with their customers The repairmen said it would be a few hours and because of the repair it could be a our $200. I appreciated the honest quote beforehand. I received a call when the flute was ready and picked it up, again, pleasantly surprised, but this time because they cleaned and polished the flute. read more

Got some coffee nearby and saw this place, and decided to drop in. Staff were friendly and let me try out some really nice basses, telling me more about them and sharing in the groove. Had an old lady come in while we were vibing and demand to see the piano books, then angrily ranted about something before stomping out. Props to the staff for helping her out calmly. Plus, chill out dude, you're giving us pianists and teachers a bad name. I ended up leaving with a decently priced set of flatwound bass strings and more knowledge about Fender basses. Nice little shop in Clovis. I was in the market for a Martin guitar but was sold on a Taylor instead. Marcos and Miguel were very helpful without being pushy. I paid attention mostly to the acoustic guitars but they have a nice selection of PRS electric guitars which I'll be back to check out. I do believe they have other brass and woodwind instruments but did not pay much attention to those. Someone was playing a trumpet while I was there though. There was a decent amount of traffic coming in and out of the store so that was nice to see. Will be back sometime. read more

Over the past week, I have had a wonderful experience at Gottschalk Music Center. My first purchase was a Taylor GS Mini guitar for my kids to share. I worked with Matt and he went above and beyond to get me set up. This week I returned to purchase a Fishman amp and an Eastman guitar for myself. I love supporting local companies, especially when they go out of their way to take care of you. All of the employees at the store are knowledgeable and welcoming. Bottom line--they make instrument shopping fun. Also, their prices are impressive. You'd expect big box companies to offer the best deals, but this is not the case here. I brought my guitar here to have new saddles shaped and put on. When I initially asked about the work, I got a lot of long "uhhhh" responses and that should have been my first red flag. Lots of random employees were answering my questions, but at no point was I given the option to speak to the actual tech who would be working on my guitar. I dropped my guitar off and was told it would be done "in 5 or 6 days". I called back 6 days later and they had forgotten to order a part, and told me to wait another week. I called them again a couple days later to ask a question, and they told me it would be ready "today" and that they'd call me. They never called me, but I went the next day and they said the work had been finished (so I guess sometimes they just don't call). When I got my guitar back, they clearly hadn't done the work, but they lied to me and told me they did. I pointed out the very specific tooling marks showing that these were in fact the old saddles, and they gave me some BS story that those tooling marks were done by the tech. So I said fine, give me the old saddles back, and they told me that they lost them. In addition, they left some scuffs on the headstock and when I pointed them out, they gave me more lies saying that the guitar had come to them that way (which was not true, as I had purchased the guitar not even a week earlier and had pictures showing the headstock in pristine condition). So in the end, they gave me the runaround and charged me to do nothing but damage my instrument. Thanks Gottschalks Music! read more

They changed original tag price to $4999 from (original tag) around $2500 when we decided to buy violin. And they did not issue a letter of the violin value. The violin says it was set up by conner (repair man's name). under Bland name. It means they imported materials cheap from China and assembled by repairman. There is no value of the bland and quality with that. We were too beginner without knowledge. We discovered it years later. I took the violin to multiple music stores Fresno and LA, they said "sorry" and approximately $1000 value. Usually, music store or even though directly buying website issue a letter what says value of violin. not just tiny paper receipt. I was wondering and had problem of quality and sound, because of that. Not only skill. Perhaps professional can make good sound with junk violin. But if you are seriously learning violin, I do not recommend buying any violin above of $1000 from Gottschalk. You can't trade. You will be stacked. They don't carry high quality violins. Their business is not fair. Also, they admitted because they can make more money by doing that. This violin we purchased has sticker inside, it says repairman's name. And was set up at Gottschalks. I did not have any knowledge to avoid this scam. Because I was too new and did not know how to choose, so you better buy amazon, you better buy web. directly, you better buy good music store which your teacher recommends and trust. Most professional teachers know trustworthy music stores. Especially, more than $2000 violin, you better buy real music store where issue a letter of value, good strings instruments reputation. Perhaps only to repair might be okay. Perhaps very beginner to buy really low-price violin at Gottschalk. So, you will not be sorry to replace it to high quality at another place. However, I learned, and I recommend buy any violin at the music store where your teachers can trust, so you can trade the old violin to high quality violin as you improve. But not from Gottschalks. If you are serious to learn violin, not from Gottschalks. You will regret to buy violin from them. If you want to buy good violin, your teacher should know where and they will help to choose for you. All music Professors at State, music Simba, Mr. Thi, even though you may be able to ask philharmonic member after they finish concert. You can search professors at Fresno State if you are in Fresno. You can search before buying violin at Gottschalks, and you can rent and take it and ask at another store or violin professionals' opinion if you don't have teacher to guide. I wish somebody told me before. I still have the violin. However, our wonderful professor violin teacher found a good violin in LA. We are very happy for new violin. It is almost impossible to find suitable good violin without your violin teacher if you are a student. I highly recommend L.A. Your teachers should know. We could find a good quality of violin at Morey's music store. They are very professional. However, it is far, so our teacher (Mrs. Toren) helped to find, and we wanted to go there to play before purchase. They issued a letter of violin value, and we are very satisfied and happy to find from them. I am typing for other people not to go through like I had. They asked if I had an account there and I said no so they made one for me. Moving to Portland next month and wanted to make sure my case was travel ready! brought it in yesterday and gave it to Conner- also bought a new Popper and a new cake of rosin. The guy who helped cash me out was super sweet and really cool- it was kind of busy but he was very attentive. Case was ready to pick up the next day- got the velcro on the inside replaced, the locks straightened, and the little balance thingies on the bottom replaced. i really liked this place. only in their a brief visit there. i read good reviews of it. they had some very cool bizarre instruments. seemed like, if i recall, they had an upright bass with a drop C range on the E string. VERY cool. i bought me a fiddle bow even though i didn't really need it. i was interested talking to the salesman. the violins were too good for me to purchase. I'm a very sub-par "fiddle" player that doesn't need an instrument of that magnitude. read more

Awesome place to bring instruments for repair. Brought a once $600 dollar flute in for repair that my wife got for $60 at an antique shop down the street, and a little over $100 dollars later it should be worth $500. The repair woman was friendly and walked me through what repairs were needed and had it done a day later. Looks like they do music lessons also, which seem to be organized by appointment and have private rooms for one on one sessions. May take them up on this someday, thanks again! read more

This was my first time at Gottschalk Music Center. As soon as I walked in I automatically felt refreshed to be in the store, and not just because I got out of our strong Central Valley heat!.hahah! No, it was refreshing to be in a local music store that's been around longer than I can remember. Here's what stood out the most. I called at around 10 in the morning when they opened and was greeted by one of their reps (Sheri, I believe- I hope I spelled her name correctly), to ask if they sold individual strings. I called "the other" music store, and although they both didn't have the exact product I was looking for, the other latter stood out for sounding genuine. I guess a better word to what I felt was comforted by the quality of service that was given just by a phone call. The call probably lasted about minute, but I knew right away where I wanted go. All I needed was a string for my guitar, but instead I experienced genuine customer service. I can't speak too much about how branding of chains tend to draw people, I guess it makes sense in the grand scheme of things, but what made GMC stand out was sticking to what's most important to their customers which are relationships. I took a violin bridge in to be reshaped, this was Saturday, they said they would call me Monday with a quote, Tuesday they called and said it would be ready by Friday, I showed up Saturday and they said it wasn't ready and that they would call me on Monday again, I was never called and I showed up the following Monday, they gave me all kinds of excuses and said it would be done later that day but I was fed up, so when I demanded my instrument,amazingly they said they were working on it and it would be ready in 5 minutes.
