Barker & Stonehouse

Just next to football ground so time your visit carefully on match days! Good parking with two…read morefloors of bedroom / lounge / dining furniture. They also have a smallish design/kitchenwear section. Definitely one of the more expensive places to buy furniture in Newcstle but they stock quality brands eg Natuzzi, Collins and Hayes, Ercol etc. More modern feel to furniture than John Lewis and Fenwick Layout of store pretty good Good for; well heeled, those that buy quality Poor for; students, young couples in first flat, the poor, people who change furiture every year

If you want to be lied to, mislead and deceived then Barker and Stonehouse is the place to go!! 15…read moremonths and three sets of sofas later and we have had to compromise to conclude our interaction with the store. Customer service is appalling, don't return calls, lie and just basically pass the buck. Strauss Leather Sofas 1. Scraped on delivery so they sent out their own "Leather Expert" who stated it was a "Natural Scar" which we knew it wasn't, so after much persistence they finally admitted it was damaged on delivery and offered a price reduction which we rejected, and opted for a replacement, so a replacement was ordered. Strauss Leather Sofas 2. Arrived but unable to get arm off to bring it in house, so back it went, then a delay over delivery protocols with their own delivery process which resulted in another company delivering it which added 6 weeks to the time. Then when it arrived it had pressure marks from the way it had been wrapped which again the "Leather Expert" was called out to try and rectify, and it was the same "Expert" [who we have since found out is actually a French polisher] but now employed by Home serve, so confidence wasn't high. He stated they were pressure marks and managed to remove one [which returned a week later] but the ones he couldn't remove suddenly reverted to "Natural Creases" After persisting for a second opinion on the faults, the assistant manager from the Newcastle store made a home visit and fully agreed the sofa was faulted and would arrange a full refund, but he then later contacted us and informed us his Head office did not agree with his assessment based on the pictures they had received from him and it was yet again a "Natural Leather imperfection" So after many more phone calls and store visits we were basically told go to the Ombudsman or choose yet another sofa. We chose the latter as we were basically fed up with the whole situation and went this time for material sofa. Throughout this whole process everyone within the Newcastle store was very apologetic and is in full agreement that we had been treat appallingly and our treatment had fell well short of what it should have, many promises were made throughout including compensation for our treatment, but I am not holding my breath for that. I had gone to Barker and Stonehouse because of their reputation but maybe I live in the wrong postcode or don't drive a Range Rover based on an off the cuff comment that was made during one of our store visits. And just a footnote to this, while we looked around the Newcastle store for our replacement sofa, we came across our first damaged sofa for sale described as "Ex Display" You couldn't make it up!!

Fenwick is a large department store, located in Newcastle city centre, it's spread over five floors…read moreand is one of the anchor stores at Eldon Square Shopping Centre. Fenwick as a brand has 8 locations across the country and was founded here in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This location is their flagship. The store has entrances on street level (Northumberland Street) as well as entrances from the mall. The store is open until 7 pm on most days, although opening hours can vary, this means they're generally open an hour later than John Lewis, which is the mall's other main department store. The store is fairly attractive, with modern and older parts and the selection again is reasonable. The renovation is starting to show which is ongoing to celebrate the store's 140th anniversary. The Food Hall area reminded me a little of a smaller version of Harrods, pricey for sure but they had a variety of items appearing to be high-quality, including some meats which looked of a fantastic quality. I much prefer the technology section at John Lewis nearby, however - although Fenwick for sure wins on the Food Hall side of things. 4*

Thank you again to two great sales ladies Lindsey and Helen in the electrical department…read moredownstairs. I bought a magimix food processor, it wasn't a straight forward sale as I had to take it abroad. Lindsey and Helen really bent over backwards to help me find the right size, the colour I wanted, to wrap it well to take it on a plane ..... They couldn't have been nicer. A real pleasure in doing business with sales staff like that and they definitely make you want to shop at the store again.

Wilko's - Wilko in Newcastle City Centre

Wilko's

Love Wilko's!! My personal 'go to' place for any home essentials at a bargain price!…read more There's always an offer to be had on cleaning products which understandably no one likes to pay a hefty price for, and there is a pretty sizeable interior decoration section upstairs with all the basics you might need to decorate your bathroom, living room, kitchen, bedroom or garden! Yes it's cheap but actually a lot of it is pretty decent quality too. If your home is in need of a refurb without breaking the bank balance then Wilko's is your store! If you're a sucker for pick n mix at the cinema I'd recommend getting yourself here as they sell Candy King sweets at much cheaper prices. Sometimes a flashback to childhood is just medicine! The only downsides to Wilko's are that the staff always seem irritated if you ask them anything and you will normally have to queue for a fair bit at the tills even when it's quiet.

Hands down I am a huge Wilkinsons fan! After four years of depriving myself from Wilko goodies, I…read moream happy to say that Wilkinsons is still the cheap, reliable place I remember it to be. This is the type of store great for bargain hunters wanting to add some flourish and essentials to their house. This store is huge so I haven't explored it much beyond the pet and stationery sections (the most important bits!) YET, but I can say that these departments are well stocked with a wide selection. As you enter, there's escalators going upstairs to the home department and a cafe, to the right are back-to-school deals and food with 5 till points beyond that. Deeper into the store on the right is the stationery section (which has a good range off DIY and card making goodies) and the pet section is further in with another entrance/exit at the back of the store. The pet aisle is quite big with a good range of own brand treats and branded treats that don't come with the supermarket price tags. The only reason why I'm giving a four-star rating is that there are definitely not enough staff on the tills so the queue was quite long. Also I noticed a lot of dust around and on products... a few more staff members wouldn't go amiss.

I then had no further contact until i went online at the my account section of their website. I was surprised to find that my order was listed as refunded, then emailed the company to ask for clarification and received no reply. I then had to telephone the company and was informed that they thought someone had let me know they couldn't deliver to my area so cancelled my order. I am now still waiting to get my money back so I can order a bed from another company that will hopefully fulfil their role and actually supply a bed and mattress.

I listened to their radio advert and went in because my bed was 12 years old with a slightly bemused 'so you reckon i should change my mattress every 7 or 8 years tell me why attitude'. Now that I have had the new mattress a few weeks, I understand exactly, as I didn't really think my previous and much loved mattress was the cause of my constant waking up, I thought it was just my sleeping habits had changed as I got older. Now my Fitbit tells me i am restless a couple of times a night instead of a sleep pattern that looks like a barcode and would you believe it, i actually feel better too so overall money well spent. Thanks for the education!
