I just had lunch at The Goods in Portsmouth's downtown area. The food is very good (hence the name) but the best part was Todd. He's very personable and friendly. I always like supporting businesses with great customer service. If you go for lunch - try the Buddha bowl with shrimp. It was the perfect size. This was our second visit to Goods and we walked out with so many unique and beautiful items for our home. The prices are super reasonable and the store is so well organized and thought out! RUDE!! The owner is Absolutely NUTS! He yelled at me I'm front of several customers because of my facial expressions after he yelled at my sister to shop or leave! She was browsing and he didn't like that! I'm appalled at how he treated us and I would advise to NEVER shop there!! read more

RUDE , Rude ,Rude I never got into this store for the apparent owner ,I presume ,nearly accosted me when I moved a rowing oar at what I curiously thought was a front door decoration to this store to gain entrance...There was no signage saying it was closed. As i innocently moved the oar to walk in,a gentleman rudely says" THE STORE IS CLOSED CAN"T YOU SEE...versus "I am so sorry Miss, but our store is closed and I hope you can come back when we are open. "I asked when he was open, and he gruffly pointed to a little sign on the window, (note-looks like just weekends)..so this potential customer wont be visiting Goods in the near future. P.S. I thought it interesting that several other reviews experienced a similar negative vibe. read more

This boutique is so charming! I visited downtown Portsmouth on my way to Portland Maine. The gifts here are unique and quaint, but totally in a good way. I purchased a canvas tote here and the price was surprisingly affordable. I expected to pay way more than I did for such a well made and stylish bag. I wanted to buy several bags for future use--weekend bag, travel bag, camping bag, etc. My fiance convinced me not to and I totally regret it! My friends who've seen my bag are in love with it! I think the bag or the other items in the store would make perfect Christmas or birthday gifts. My only "complaint" is that there isn't an online website where I can purchase items seen in the store. I live about 5 hours away so it's a pain to drive to Portsmouth but I think I will make a trip over before Christmas time. Also, the store owner is the best! He has a great personality and made my shopping experience so fun. I highly recommend visiting this store if you're in the area. read more

Damn, Don beat me to it! This new downtown boutique is totally quaint, and I mean that in the best way possible. My husband and I were drawn in by the "Portsmouth 603" hoodie in the window, and spent almost an hour talking to the owner and another customer. It's just a really welcoming and calm place. Basically, this is the clothing/tourist goods version of City & Country on the other side of town. Lots of sweaters with anchors, cute pillows, hats, wall decor, jewelry, etc. The one thing that wasn't in stock was the 603 hoodie-- the owner explained that he can never keep them in stock and he had just sold the last of them that morning. No big loss, we ended up with a different Portsmouth themed hoodie. Prices are VERY reasonable, by the way. I expected this type of boutiquey shop to charge around 40 for a printed sweater, but these ranged from $15-25. We also got a super cute cast iron porthole mirror for $25 that I expected to be a lot more. Goods still doesn't have a sign or permanent shopping bags (only Chinese take-out style bags. They do take credit cards now, though), but it's definitely worth a stop on your shopping itinerary, and I can't wait to go back! read more

Been here twice, didn't like it the first time (a turkey BLT only comes with one piece of bacon... that should be illegal) and got a breakfast sandwhich today that could've been from dunks at a third of the price. A new, fun store on Market Street. They just opened Friday and even though they don't seem totally ready, they're having fun. There's no sign, they don't take credit cards, and there's an eclectic mix of t-shirts, pillows, cookware, etc. It's really like walking into a store that hasn't opened yet and the fun is exploring what they've got. We'll see what this turns into but for now, I'm smiling when I think about when we walked in there. read more

I do not suggest patronizing this store. The owner was extremely rude to me and my family the entire time we were in his shop and we left without purchasing items that we would have purchased had he not been so rude to us. Never in my life have I been treated as poorly as I was here. Portsmouth has many fantastic places to shop and I suggest that you seek them out. As a local, I am embarrassed that this shop owner treats potential customers poorly, yet still remains in business. read more

Definitely a little pricey for the quality of food...I understand its supposed to be local, healthy and organic but there's lunch spots in Portsmouth that offer better quality food for less. It also takes a loooong time to wait for your food. I was the only person in there and ordered a pretty basic deli sandwich that took 20min! We stumbled upon this small cafe on a recent rainy Sunday. We were greeted by a friendly smile and a small but more than a satisfying menu of breakfast items, sandwiches and pizzas. Our meals, a vegetarian omelette and breakfast sandwich on a wonderful poppyseed bagel, with coffee and chai tea- were simply perfect. The shop has an assortment of items from freshly baked breads to apple crisp in a jar and more. A sweet place - with a mother daughter dynamic duo serving up good food with a smile. We went to Goods for the first time the weekend after Christmas. My girlfriend and I stopped in because we were intrigued by a sign in the window that we thought would look nice in one of our houses. Unfortunately when we stopped in the woman who was working behind the counter couldn't help us with the sign because the older man who worked there was blocking access to it. It appeared he was on the phone with his internet provider, as he was having a pretty heated argument about the price he was paying for wifi. Although we found the two employees difficult, we decided to check out of our hotel and stop back in on our way out of town. Regretfully when we again stopped in and asked for assistance we were met with only with a bad attitude from both workers there. We were concerned about purchasing the sign without getting a better look at it, because several other items in the shop appeared to be high quality products but revealed themselves to be shabbily made upon closer inspection. When we asked to see the sign that was in the window display the shopkeeper literally said, "Can't you see it through the window." At which point we decided not to do any business with Goods. I've never encountered a local business person as rude as the older man who was working in Goods. In short Goods appears to peddle a few cute nautical themed decorations, but nothing too original. My advice would be to save yourself from the abrasive shop keeper and take your money elsewhere. read more
