From The Independent we learned of the SB Dance Center's $7 dance lesson and practice party afterward and decided to give it a shot. The Center is spacious with a nice-sized lobby for chit-chat, and two generous ballrooms with good fans and nice art. Class was surprisingly well-attended for a rainy Saturday night and we were treated to a Charleston/Lindy Hop lesson. I've been Lindy Hopping since '98 (damn I'm old!) but I appreciated the refresher. Our fellow dancers were from a variety of backgrounds and ages, and all were kind and friendly, exactly the wholesome type you encounter at a swing dance. The instructors did a nice job incorporating the basics for all the beginners and even tossed in a couple of more advanced moves for those of us long-time lindy hoppers. We stayed after for the practice dance, and although it was initially weird getting asked to dance (and asking guys to dance again!) it was super fun and I know Chun P. wouldn't mind. Every Saturday night the Center offers a different type of dance lesson, and I'm looking forward to dropping by for a dance and seeing my new friends on my next trip!

Recently, I witnessed her father…read morebringing recording equipment to rehearsals and filming full performances of other dancers from behind. I documented this and reported it to the studio. Their response? It was "just a parent" filming, and they saw no need to take further action--even refusing to ask parents to only record their own children. In today's world, where recordings of young girls can end up misused online, I expected more awareness and safeguards from the management. A simple policy or announcement would go a long way, but instead, they offered a vague, dismissive response. I find this lack of action concerning and irresponsible. If your priority is your child's safety, I recommend finding a studio that takes it seriously and sets clear boundaries around filming.

About six months ago as we were planning for our wedding, my fiance (now my wife) mentioned that…read moreshe wanted to have a guitarist play music for our ceremony. I was very open to the idea, but didn't really know where to start in terms of finding the right person who was experienced and could play the songs we wanted. Thankfully, she already had someone in mind in Xander as he was also hired to play for my wife's sister's wedding a few years before. Boy oh boy, was he the PERFECT man to hire for our special day! We liked Xander (or Alex as we called him) from the day we first met with him at his studio. His broad range of music knowledge was mind-blowing and there was literally not one song that he didn't know how to play on our list! I requested a pretty tricky Beatles song (which I eventually walked down the aisle to) and literally teared up as he was playing it for us. Interestingly enough, that was his first time EVER playing the song on guitar, which just speaks for how good this guy is! Our wedding day came and we received countless compliments from guests about Alex's playing. He showed up dressed sharp, was VERY professional, and had a smile on his face the whole time. Best part about this guy is that you can tell he genuinely loves what he does. It definitely shows in his music! We seriously could not have asked for anything more from our musician on our wedding day and we WILL be requesting Alex's services in the future!

I am so grateful that we were able to have Xander bless our day with his talent and professionalism.
