I have had an excellent pie from here and on the strength of this I have been back in twice. The last two visits, the pies were OK.

The roll was crunchy, the pâté was notable, and veggies were fresh, but I think it missed the mark a bit by having fresh carrot and not Do Chua. Also, the roast pork was Woolworth deli standard. It would be nice to have something a bit more flavourful. Not a bad start though.

I arrived at 7am, 30…read moreminutes after they opened, and was met with mostly coffee orders, a few savoury pastries and 3 sweet options. I asked when the display would be filled and was told as they are made fresh it would be around 10am. I often feel guilty leaving places without a purchase and had come this far so what the hell! I decided on the cinnamon scroll and Nutella dobundt (baked donuts). I envisioned microwaving their staleness away but this never came to be. When I was given my tray it was very heavy and the bottom was warm from the food. Travelling back home gave plenty of time for my mouth to water over the inviting, homely, cinnamon aroma filling my car. Eating with a cuppa and fresh fruit; the scroll was incredibly soft and fluffy with a slightly caramelised base and good filling ratio. The Nutella dobundt was equally as fresh despite not eating it until the afternoon. Didn't indulge on the Nutella. Just the right amount. Cake texture with a dusting of donut sugar. I must return when the store is full. So far I'm impressed.

The cakes and things look lovely but my review is purely on the coffee not the food. Coffee was average and lacked the aroma or depth I was expecting. Would love to try their food and baked goods and perhaps assess my review again.

They also had a McDonalds across the road which usually takes a bit of custom away. We were unimpressed with the food. The pies were OK and the pastries were a bit on the small size but OK. Considering the price they were charging, they could have been much better. An odd indicator was that there were no birds around to eat the pastry...I hoped they weren't in the pies On the positive side, we were able to get a parking spot, and somewhere to sit down. The tables were wiped down regularly and most of the customers wore masks. We won't be back in a hurry as there are plenty of small cafes on and off the main drag that have better quality food and are value for money.

My absolute favourite dish is the Pad Prik Sod and it always has the perfect amount of flavour and spice. The Curry Puffs with Cucumber Sauce really are amazing. These puffs have definitely set me up to be a life long C.P. snob. I have such fond memories of this place - it is a great restaurant to catch up with friends and have a fantastic meal. Tried this cafe out with a friend. The store itself is gorgeous. The experience was strange…read more The hostess the morning we were there was very aggressively making sure no one took one pair of tables. I'm not sure if it was reserved or not, but every pair of diners who entered the cafe were loudly told those tables were only for parties of 4. Every interaction with the hostess was uncomfortable, as if I was getting into trouble from a headmistress. The menu has a lot of really interesting-sounding Macedonian food, but it's lost amongst an enormous list of usual suspects - like burgers. I chose avocado on toast and a hot chocolate; my dining partner chose french toast and a flat white. My hot chocolate was made cappuccino-style, with foam, and was one of the better hot chocolates I've had in Newcastle. I could see myself calling in for a hot chocolate takeaway if I lived nearby. Breakfast was disappointing, for both the price point. The smashed avocado on toast ($15) was two small pieces of ciabatta with unseasoned avocado and feta on it. It was underwhelming and overpriced for the portion size, especially comparing other cafes in Newcastle, though the avocado was fresh. The french toast ($14) was a single slice of wonder bread-style toast with maple syrup and berries in little jars. Again, it was almost funny because it was so underwhelming. Overall, the meal kind of felt thrown together, or pre-made. Overall, I wouldn't return. The food is basically home-made, in that I can easily make at the same standard at home. Breakfast needs to totally be reconsidered. The cafe is beautiful but needs atmosphere - music, happy staff. It has amazing history, and I think if they trimmed the menu down to focus on the Macedonian dishes, this cafe could be incredible.
