The Nordic Maid is a great little store in downtown Poulsbo that will introduce you to the world to…read moreeverything Nordic! Plenty of anything you're interested in from coffee table books to figurines and Nordic themed shirts and hats. Prices are a little on the high side - what you'd expect from a themed store in a small town. Overall it's a nice place to visit when you're strolling through Poulsbo to grab a donut from Sluys' and get your Nordic fix!

This was the first store we stopped in to check out on our day-trip exploring Poulsbo…read more The good news: if you're of Scandinavian heritage (or if you're just interested in Scandinavian history), you will certainly be in your element here! There are books and clothes and decorations and foods and accessories and most-things-imaginable, all from Denmark, Sweden and Finland. It was like an uber-specialized Ikea department (with WAY higher prices, though). There were baby bibs and toys with Finnish sayings on them, magnets and souvenirs from "the Olde country", napkins and tea-light metal carousels and other Nordic-European fare. If you're nostalgic for Nordic fare, you're sure to get your fix here. The bad news: the prices. Even acknowledging that the merchandise is from Norway, who wants to pay $15 for a pair of socks that don't look special or different that what you can find in any sock store (I'm talking red socks with a stripe of flowers on them? Nothing that screams "I'm special and imported from Denmark!"). Even the Poulsbo souvenir magnets (which are probably made in China) were overpriced. And the lady behind the counter was dour and I don't think she cracked a smile since the 60's. No "thank you for stopping by" or "how can I help you?" or anything. I didn't get the warm fuzzies here. But my friend got a few Poulsbo red crab fridge magnets, and we left for friendlier stores on Front Street.

We discovered TJ when we went to our wedding venue's open house about 7 months before our wedding -…read moreshe had done the arrangements for the event and we were so impressed that we just knew we had to hire her. Working with TJ was wonderful. We did most, actually ALL, of our communication via email as I lived out of state. She was so patient with me as I tried to navigate through Pinterest boards and google photos to try to find what I liked and didn't like and made sure that she understood my vision. She provided lots of good advice when I was unsure and was so sweet and understanding throughout the whole process. On the day of I was blown away by the way her floral arrangements transformed everything into a perfect combo of tropical and pacific northwest (I know, not your typical theme). I absolutely LOVED my bridesmaids and bridal bouquets and the greenery on the tables at our reception just elevated the already beautiful venue to another level. She even came back to the venue at the end of the night to clean up and help us gather the arrangements we wanted to keep. She knew our venue well (Kiana Lodge), and we are so grateful to her for helping make my vision a reality. Thank you so much TJ! (Photos taken by Luma Weddings)

It's owned by a maestro of style, Laurie; and you need only give her an idea, and you will be served well. She is knowledgeable, kind, cheerful, and always willing to talk to you about all things flowers. I have been coming to Pistil Design for years now, and her new location in Ballard is a perfect spot to gather yourself when you need flowers. It's a store, but it's also an inviting workshop and pulls you inward. The selection is seasonal; therefore, freshness is guaranteed. I never know what I want and honestly, flowers are things that you need to have a knack for, but she knows how to match the flower to the right person or occasion. This was Valentines, and roses are always good, but I wanted something different, something non-traditional that would convey the love for my wife. Having Laurie meant I could rest easy. When the day came, I walked in, and she presented to me a beautiful bouquet of flowers which captured the winter and spring colors, something very Pacific Northwest, yet with all the love and passion that one could expect. Pistil Design exceeds every one of my expectations, and I would recommend that you give her a call, and share your vision/needs. She will transcend them, and put a smile on your face.
